Least favorite place to buy a gun...

I've had good experiences with the big chain stores...although I never bought a gun from them.

There's one near a movie theater where I am and I took a date to see a movie. Our showing was sold out so we got the next showing. Then had to kill 2 hours. So I took my date across the street to a huge outdoor outfitter's chain store and up to the gun department. I told the salesmen up front we were just there to kill a couple hours waiting for a movie. By the time we left, they had hauled out almost every single gun for me and had moved on to bb guns and paintball guns. At one point I think there were 5 of us(me, my date, and 3 salesmen) each with a gun in each hand just shootin the bull. I don't know why I had 3 salesmen to myself.

It was more fun than the movie.

Usually a gun shop won't pull out another gun until they put the one back you are already looking at.

If we want to talk about overpriced and rude lets talk about Gander Mountain. That place is a JOKE!!!

+1

They always act like they don't want my business so I do the polite thing and respect their wishes.

Man I must be the lucky one, my LGS is very friendly and knowledgeable, always extremely busy though. (wonder why ha,ha) My guy at the pawn shop is a close friend, lets me go behind the gun counter and look at whatever I want. The guy at Big 5 is also very knowledgeable and friendly always has time to talk or whatever. Last auction was crowded as in SRO, but these guys know their stuff, had the NICS check all set up next door and had three ladies running checks, mine was delayed but was told to try back in a couple of hours and what do you know, it cleared. So all in all very positive experiences in my area.

Gun Shows for sure. Haven't found anything to buy at a reasonable price in 3 or 4 years. Got some good tasting buffalo jerky I could munch on while going up and down the rows of overpriced weapons. The Guns of the West Show here in Arizona really brings out the camo wannabes.:banghead:

Does anybody remember the old B&B Sales gun store in North Hollywood, California? They set the high-bar for rude arrogance.

Have to agree lately, the last couple of times I looked around there I was shocked at their pricing.

But, it must be working since they stay open without changing the prices.

i've hear negative things about a local gunseller/smith/shop here in austin.

mcbride's.

funny thing is, i can go to mcbride's and look for what i know i want, and usually find it on the counter, used, for a used price, and get a really nice pistol. i've used them several times for new firearm purchases, and they're great. $50 over cost is the rule on new stuff. they'll show you the cost.

i'm thinking the thing here is education. most often, buyers and sellers are not on the same page. either a seller knows something about a weapon he doesn't want the buyer to know, or vice versa. i don't think i've ever seen a pinned and recessed S&W for 2-300 or so at a show. i've seen a beat up one at mcbride's for about $350. i've seen beat up ones at gun shows for much more.

I have looked at gun several times at Walmart and often bought ammo there. Their ammo prices pretty much can't be beat and if they happen to have a desirable gun it is probably prices well, but man the employees are awful. That is if there is actually one around. Once I had a wonderful experience at the Walmart in Moscow, ID. I bought a Marlin 336 lever, scope, rings, sling and hardcase and the guy behind the counter asked if he could put them on for me. He busted out a great gunsmithing tool kit and we jawed about guns for the 15 minutes it took to make this gun all but ready to get out and take a deer with. I was pleasantly surprised at what knowledgeable and gun loving guys worked that counter, no wonder it was 3 times the size and did more sales than any other I have seen.

AS a seller, a prospective buyer indicating he may not be able to pass the NCIS would make me a bit uneasy..... It wouldn't be unheard of for someone to suddenly 'change their policies" regarding a customer that made them uneasy for whatever reason. An FFL can refuse a sale for any reason....and someone indicating a potential problem with the NCIS may be the only red flag that potential seller needed to hear.....

That's not the reason for the "policy" and doesn't explain the ridiculous pricing. The reason for the policy is they are hosers that like to pray on yuppies who don't know any better.

I had a seriously messed up person take a temporary restraining order out on me while at the same time they were harassing me. I wanted to purchase a handgun for protection but wasn't sure I was legally able to do so after the judge refused to issue the restraining order.

That's all it was, no funny business on my part. I have purchased several handguns since then no problem.

Just say no to hosers, high prices and rude service. AMS Woodinville still sucks and I'm not the only one who thinks so after looking at the ratings and reviews online.

Another vote for gun shows here, though I sometimes enjoy going for the show itself (just browsing, that is).

I've never been impressed with the gun deals at the shows I've attended, and have usually found that my local stores are cheaper. Not to mention the fact that you can follow-up with your local gun store if you have a problem. The same cannot be said for a gun show purchase! Couple that with the fact that too many of the gun show sellers are lying cheats, or simply wanna-be mall ninja types, and I think I'll keep spending my hard earned money elsewhere.

The concept of a gun show is decent, but in reality many of the vendors at these shows seem to profit primarily off of uninformed shooters (often the ones who are new to the sport).

Since we're on this subject, I also have to agree with those who mentioned Gander Mountain. I used to go in their store fairly regularly, but I've all but forgotten that they existed around here. Their prices are way too high, and it just isn't worth the trip for me to drive over there and feel like I'm being gouged.

Least favorite,or least to buy place is hands down the
Gun Shows.I enjoy walking around in them and "browsing",
but forget about it when you see the prices on some of that
stuff. These guys are like used car salesmen.Vultures.A lot of the tables
are pure junk.Worn out stuff. With new gun prices. Some poor guy
buys there stuff.somebody that knows no better. My local gun
dealer is the next least, due to his high prices and x-tra
hidden charges.Document fees,handling fees,etc.Usually about
50 bucks worth on a $500 gun plus the taxes.
I think I'm going the internet as soon as I find me a "reputable'
FFL transfer guy.
So far I've called 2 FFL guys. One charges 40 and the other 50.
Of course those 2 guys are out.I'm still searching.
