To All .44 Hunters/Handloaders

Heavy hard Cast for me, always two holes and always a ton of blood. Usually there's less damage to the meat.

Whats nice is is you can shoot really mild loads if you want and they still pass all the way through. These mild loads make for really good accuracy from a 44. Good shot placement with any weapon is the key but a nice mild hardcast 44 blows a through like a good broadhead. 44 in a handgun is a fine combination for hunting, just right.

Don't know why folks mess with outdated designs like Remington and Winchester generic jacketed bullets. They were no good 50yrs ago and no better now.
Probably because I've never ran into a performance parameter that they weren't more than adequate for. And, since I don't reload anymore, they are cheap and available. I've nothing against the higher end loads in .44 Mag, I've just never seen the need for them. "Dead Is Dead"

i have not had an oppertunity to shoot a deer with my 44 yet (only one season hunting with it). but i hunt with 240g jhp's.

Years ago, I was stationed at Travis AF Base in northern California. I hunted each and every year for the elusive coastal black tailed deer. I toppled over a dozen bucks during my assignment years with Marlin model 1894 in 44 MAG. None got away.

I had terrible accuracy with standard .429 bullets. But Hornady's 200 grain hollow tip is .430 and I was quite pleased with its performance. This short but wide bullet is practically a round ball from the perspective of bearing surface as it spins down the barrel. All the old timers used round balls with their slow twist muzzle-loaders. Perhaps this is why the 200 grain bullet is so accurate with Marlin's slow twist.

This 200 grain bullet makes a BIG HOLE going in and it never comes out. I recovered many expanded bullets that were mushroomed nearly flat - typical diameter of .75 !! This hollow tip bullet hits much harder than paper charts would suggest.

For mulies, large whitetails, and black bears I suggest Hornady's 240 grain XTP bullet.

I shoot speer 240gr jacketed solid points in both my marlin and my ruger superblackhawk 44mag usually a pass thru with good expansion and accuracy in both my load is 23.8gr h110 with a mag primmer.
