If you have a collection and are thinking of reducing it, is now a bad time to be selling off your guns? It seems panic buying and hoarding is over, and prices are stabilized, and possibly lower. If inflation was to increase, then anything you sell will cost more to replace later. What do you think?

Why reduce the collection? If you have heath problems then you have to. Thankfully i have a few years untill this point.

If and when the economy picks up, gun prices will go higher. As far as "panic" buying goes, people have seemed to have learned the lesson that no confiscation is in the offing. Therefore, this is not a good time to sell unless you absolutely have to.

It's a buyer's market. The scare is over, the dollar's unstable, gold and oil are up- predicting inflation that hasn't hit the gun market yet, people are broke and need the money selling a couple old guns can get them. There's a whole host of factors at play right now that have me buying rather than selling.

It really is a buyer's market right now, but if you absolutely need to sell you're not going to be completely taken. Prices have stabilized and are definitely lower in the AR/tacticool areas, but if you're thinking about selling some pistols or hunting rifles I think you have a better chance of getting a reasonable amount out of them.

Just as anecdotal evidence, I recently sold 5 guns and only took a loss on one of them (a hunting rifle which I bought new). On my other guns that I sold, I either broke even or gained a little bit (maybe $20 or so). To be fair though, all of the guns I didn't take huge losses on were guns that I bought used for pretty good prices to begin with. If you bought your guns new, do yourself a favor and don't compare the price you get for what you originally paid for them. Depreciation hits guns hard.

If you don't really need to sell right now, I'd say wait a little while for the market to pick back up.

Depends on what you have - if it is the everyday EBR type of stuff, then you'll lose...........if you have classics in small available quantities like a K38 Masterpiece - they never go out of style

I had been trying to sell a few here and most of the time I just get people wanting me to sell to them illegally (selling to someone FTF that is not a resident of my state). I will not do that, so, I quit trying to sell anything. I was just trying to clear out some things I don't really use, but I can try it again in the future if the economy ever pulls out of the depression (you see, I think things are much worse than what you hear).

I have bought certain guns before because I thought would be useful to me or because I really wanted that certain model. So when I tire of them sitting around unused I post them on my local classifieds and make most of my money back. The money that is lost I feel went towards a learning experience and having fun for awhile. So, I wouldn't say now is a bad time to sell guns, but for a big profit, then yes.

As it becomes more and more apparant that the Democrats will loose The White House in 2012, all those guys who went out and bought an AR during the panic will realize that they have not shot it in a couple of years and now want a Harley or whatever. There should be a flood of nearly new rifles on the used gun market before long. Time to buy!

It really depends on your reason for selling, if you need cash, then its NEVER a bad time to sell guns as there are always buyers, but, if you are looking for top dollar to put towards another project, then its not a good time to sell

It seems harder to me. I've got a good quality Smith Snub that I need to get rid of, and have had Zero interest, after it wasn't what a gent, who I believe to be a collector, was looking for

They keep saying it's a buyer's market but I haven't found my NIB M1A Scout for $900 yet. I'm also looking for a mint Gibson ES 335 in Desert Burst for $1000.

But I don't think spring headed for summer is a good time to sell. I think a good time to sell is when people are thinking about hunting.

Now, fishing gear. That could be different.

What is the likelihood of another gun buying panic when Obama is re-elected? Maybe I would be better to hold now, and sell then.

While Obama might be a one-term president don't completely discount the possibility of his re-election especially if Perot II, er, Trump, runs.

if obama gets reelected he can try to pass gun laws without a detriment to re-election so they will again go through the roof

There will only be another panic if WE panic and create it. These things are self fulfilling prophecies ... like ammo shortages. The more people say there is no ammo on the shelf the more people hoard leaving no ammo on the shelf.

Personally I think it is a buyers market. Lots of people are selling things because they need cash. There are less people with cash and therefore less people competing to purchase the guns. Smart buyers wait for sellers to drop their price or offer a lower amount than listed. I see a lot more no reserve auctions on GB these days going at low ball prices.

When more people have more disposable income prices in the used market are higher. IMHO

I know Grant and I can tell you this is NOT what he is trying to do. Check around if you like. See what availability is on Parts. Check the prices and projected prices on Ammo. Grant doesn't need people to panic buy. He does just fine without it.

A lot of dealers said the same thing Pre Obama and look what happened there.

I'm constantly buying and selling stuff. I'm not much of a hoarder. If it isn't something I'm going to shoot regularly, carry or have sentimental attachment to; I'll sell it in a heartbeat. I have a few keepers, but I have other guns that I buy and sell often just so I get to try something different. I've never bought a used firearm that I couldn't sell for the same price down the road.

The last one I sold went cheaper than I hoped, but I picked up an equal value replacement at an equally low price and I didn't lose $$$ on the firearm. As a matter of fact, I came out ahead in ammo somewhere in the mix. Now I have a couple hundred rounds of 40 and nothing to shoot it with. Used guns always seem to be a constant. If you're forced to sell low, you can turn around and buy low.

If I was selling just for the $$$...I wouldn't do it now. I'd wait and see what the market does.

If it's a buyers market right now how long will it stay that way? I haven't been in the gun game long enough to know how long these fluctuations are, so when do you think prices will start to rise again?

IMHO when the economy picks up and people feel better about their job security and have more disposable income. If you are worrying about paying the bills you are not looking at buying more guns. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people who are falling behind or barely treading water in this economy.

Prices might spike if Obama is reelected and people panic again.... :banghead: What people forget is that the Dems have been recruiting pro gun Democrats for years now. That is one of the ways they took control of Congress at one point. Dems like Shuler and Manchin who will not be voting against our gun rights if they want to be re-elected. Obama is limited in what he can do because the Dems do not vote as a block.
