Anyone have a good idea what the value of a 6" Smith 586 might be. Found one that looks to be in near new condition, and the guy has the original blue cardboard box and all the papers. I don't know what year it was build, the guy wants $600. What do you think?

Your friend has a limited market on the east side of the mountain, are you around Bend? $600 for a LNIB 586, blue 6" with B&P is not out of line. I've seen the same revolver bring $750 on Gunbroker.

If it has a turn ring, any muzzle wear then it's a more like a $500 revolver.

Hello friends and neighbors // A little high but I doubt you will find another easily.

Try for $550 OTD but settle for $575 and a used holster, if they have a bin.
Good luck, the 6" 586 just happens to be my number one choice for an all around revolver.

Thanks for the info, took it off his hands for 550. Nice shooter, always wanted one, you just don't see the 586 around my parts, but everyone has a 686, but in IMHO it is hard to beat the looks of a nicely blued wheel gun with good wood grips.

It's hard to say. Box and papers is to S&W guy what original frame case colors are to Parker Bros. guy.:uhoh:

My current 586 no-dash in almost mint condition is a safe queen. Polishing and bluing is so pretty. I seriously doubt this particular piece will see much use.

On my previous, well-used 586, I had a hard time cleaning powder/lead residue from the forcing cone area and the cylinder flutes, so if I want to shoot a Smith L-frame, the 686 gets the nod.

Hello friends and neighbors // Well done, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Mine is from 1983, No Box and ready for S&W to do a reblue/tune up.
I just have to be willing to part with it for a couple of months and that hasn't happened yet.

I saw one at a local gunshop for an asking price of $800. I just laughed. I don't want one that much and it wasn't even worth discussing the issue when you start that high.

Congrats! They're wonderful revolvers, and the prices have increased a bit of late. I picked mine up 3 years ago for $400; lady had bought it and never fired it.

I agree with easyrider6042004, though. My 686 is much easier to clean, and so makes it to the range a lot more often than the mint 586. The 686 was also worked by someone who really knew what he wass doing, makes a factory L frame (or Colt) feel downright rough.

That is a very nice 4", I was really looking for a 4" but have yet to see one for sale. I think I'll just save up and get a 4" 686 for packing around the hills.
Not sure of the build date on the 6" I got, it has a ACH2*** serial, no dash after the M586, I have read that they started with AAA serial no. in 1981 and 586-1 showed up a few years later.

You'll appreciate the 6", too. They're not excessively long. My 686 is a 6", talk about an intimidating looking revolver with that full underlug!

Incidentally, my 629 is a stubby little critter:

At first I wasn't sure about the 3" tube, but it's proved very handy and really doesn't sacrifice that much velocity.

I picked up mine about two years ago---I think I was out the door for $520, including sales tax (which is high here) and my background fee.
They are great shooters. If it's truly mint, and you like it, $550 was a great buy. Like another poster said, the prices seem to be creeping up just a hair.
FYI-----they have very light triggers, single action. Which is a good thing, of course.

I whent to post a picture last week it must not have uploaded, that said, after running a box of 357, and a box of 38's I love it.

Just passed on a nickel 6 inch 586 no dash, good condition at the local shop. $399 OTD. Didn't stay on the shelf long.

That would be hard to pass on, I think my next will be a nice N frame, would love to find a nice M27 or maybe a M29.

Sometimes the grips have the date of mfg stamped on them, a good indication of when the revolver was made. msn

For those that don't like cleaning the 586 try some EEZOX, this product makes powder residue come off very easy with little or no scrubbing. Best gun care product I have used in fifty years of shooting.

Here's the 86 girls.
