I carry the following on a daily basis and they generally revolve from week to week. ( Brand not really important for the discussion, but feel free)

.22 Revolver,.22 Auto,.32 ACP,.38,.380,9mm
.45 (Large frame 1911 - not really CC tool and not carried a lot)

Question: Have you ever Questioned What You Carry Due to a odd event?

I carry the above for the unlikely occassion I have to defend myself from an human attacker or stray dog where I work. I work in a remote location and usually close up after everyone leaves and usually after sundown I close the gates near road. (There are woods on both sides...deer and wildlife abound!)

Mid week incident made me realize I am under gunned for a particular problem that has went un-noticed or may have just moved into the area, but nevertheless presents a very dangerous posistion while locking gates in the evening in a wooded area.

There was a 60-Or so pound wild boar that got hit by a vehicle at the gate which give me these thoughts! I feel certain he is not alone and they to me pose a plausible threat around dense vegetation at dusk or dark for sure.

Therefore I have changed up as of today....to a Ruger GP100 .357 this will give me a couple options in one firearm. Shotshell, .38, .357 magnum. I know the 1911 would prob do job on the hog and prob the 9mm.

I have always known there is more than one scenario to carrying, nothing is ever cut and dry! but everything below the .380 I believe would be useless on a wild boar on the charge! (and maybe the .380)

Lets hear opinions?? Do you only carry with the human adversary in mind?
Thanks!

Hogs or humans, I'm not packing less than a 9mm, period.

Yep, and add dogs to the list, rabid animals, sizeable carnivores in many parts of the country, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. In some places, danger walks on two legs, in others, four. It's a lot easier to be prepared all the time than sorry once.

And Hogs generally have a nasty attitude....and throw in a couple of piglets! :what:

I really love my .32 ACP, but this has opened my eyes....I feel it would be worthless on a pig!

why carry a 45?
cuz they don't make 46.
yes, you are correct in your assumption that hogs don't run solo.
carry as large a caliber as you can shoot accurately and rapidly and still want to carry.

I questioned my first carry gun, which was an XD45c, due to rain. The "grip" on XDs is lacking something called "grip!" I realized if my hands were wet, my follow up shots would be very difficult as my hands would likely slip a good deal after each shot, and getting a good grip would be difficult in the first place.

In the end, I traded it in!

Yes, but it won't answer. Even with a bright light in its face. Maybe I'll try waterboarding. :)

But seriously folks, I'm moving in the opposite direction. When the ink was still wet on my HCP I often carried a .45. That's was just to heavy. Now I'm down to a .38 snubbie. I've even settled for a .22LR auto on occasion. My dad recently gave me a little .25 ACP. As soon as I stumble over a pocket holster for that little buddy, it may become my carry gun.

If I were likely to encounter an angry hog, I would probably keep the .45. Wildlife isn't a concern, so I'm downsizing for comfort and convenience.

^^ Thats Funny ^^ Very Witty Lib! :D

I carry my Beretta 32 like everywhere! It is my favorite with comfort and concealability in mind. And I also like carrying my Walther P22 at the work site.

Think I will just carry the GP100 as I leave work in the evenings? And I generally put firearm on my side after everyone leaves in evening and do all my next days planning then close up.

In town, Makarov, just because it's fairly easy to carry. Out of town, King Cobra. I figure the .357 is OK for anything short of a grizzly.

I realize the Mak is probably not the best carry gun, and I have considering replacing it with something a bit more powerful, but I'm comfortable with it and have put hundreds (or maybe thousands) of rounds through it with no problems at all.

I've questioned my .40's, simply because I don't shoot them quite as well as a 9mm. I may trade.

If you are really concerned about the local fauna I would think the smallest gun you should carry would be a 3" SP101.

Can you carry on your belt or a shoulder holster? Carry the biggest caliber you can. If so carry a .357 at a minimum and think about a .44 mag. I would prefer a six inch barrel in DA.

I've hunted my whole life, and I have never seen a hog react to me in any other way than running away. However, wild dogs are a valid concern.

I consider 22 to not be enough for defense, nor .380. 9mm is the threshold, and 40 or higher is preferred. When hunting, I take along a 7.62x63, heh.

Hiking the trails around here I carry a 4" GP 100 or Model 25. Pitch black here at night and with boars aplenty, I'll have an SP 101 with .357's (and a light) when I take out the trash.

Aw, you beat me to it.

Have You Ever Questioned Your Carry Gun...

The only time I have was in a dream where my 9mm had no effect on an attacker. That was probably a result of my gf looking at possible carry guns that day and basically saying the 9mm wasn't enough in her opinion. Guess her affront to my male ego and caliber choice came out in my dream.

However, whenever I'm awake I'm very confident in it. Would be nice to have a glock 30 though...

Variety may be the spice of life and make range time more fun, but if you're betting your butt on what you carry it should be limited to what points the same and has the same manual of arms. I question how effective someone thinks they can actually be that keeps changing what they carry all the time.

I question my LCP all of the time. Then I try to think of something else that packs more power, but still sits neatly in my pocket with a spare mag in the other pocket without showing any sign of itself and come up blank. I guess if I can't end the threat with 12 .380 hollowpoints, then a higher power has decided my day has finally come.

No, I don't question my carry gun at all, even when it happens to be my .380 Auto!

My philosophy is that, with any gun, a well-placed shot is the determining factor of just how well the gun's projectile will perform!

HSO.. I Think you said it all! While I do enjoy the spice of my range of calibers, i must say with regards to the change up in carry guns one gets into a realm of PERFECT! and one must realize that PERFECT does not exist because the situation that has not occurred will never be perfect.

With regards to pigs (both human and not) I too have hunted most of my life, as well as grew up with domestic pigs as a young boy. I always expect wildlife to turn tail and go away!

But when you add in piglets, as with a domestic animal....A Sow will kill you!
I have hunted enough to know you Dont feed the Bears nor do you trust a wild animal that has the ability to hurt you.

countless people have been gored or even killed trying to feed there "pet Buck".....how cute they are till the "rut" starts!

I had for years adopted the .380 as my carry piece...then wanted smaller, more comfy and adopted the .32 and have enjoyed it but swapped it out regularly with .380... I will most likely just go back to my .380 as everyday and leave the .357 in the truck!

as HSO pointed out and made me realize one important thing! I am extremely accurate with my .380...it has 15 - 19 rounds depending on magazine selection. (the 15 is a little more CCW friendly) I trust it with my life, knowing confidently when I pull it the target will be hit!

Thanks HSO .... Truly Thanks!
