A couple of weeks ago I was making the rounds at the local gun/pawn shops looking for something I couldn't live without, and to my surprise one of the shops offered me a part-time job.

I'm a disabled vet with lots of time on my hands and lately I've been bored out of my mind. I called the VA and Social Sec. who told me I could work a part-time job. It feels great to be a part of the work force again, although it is taking some getting used to.

I only work 2 1/2 days a week (20 hours) and make $250 a week, but the money is not really an issue (it is nice though). So far I work mainly in the back straightening up the gun items, doing minor repairs, and occasionally working the counter. I prefer working in the back, but interacting with customers has proven to be very interesting. They run from first time gun buyers to old collectors and arrogant <deleted> to respectful and polite.

In less than two weeks I've repaired three handguns (two Keltecs with loose ejector springs and a Para with a stubbornly stuck mag) and two shotguns, one was re-building a Mossberg from just a frame and mag tube.

One of the bad things is seeing many guns that I want, yet cannot afford them and seeing many guns broken that are too expensive to repair for re-sale.

I haven't asked about an employee discount yet, as I have two guns on layaway at two other gunshops, but I'm pretty sure there is one.

Sounds like a 'dream' job to me. Congrats on the job and getting back in the work force and thank you for your service!

Lucky Ba$****, Thanks for Your service and good luck with the new job, which I'm afraid will end up costing You money ( Like hiring a fat kid at a bakery LOL LOL LOL ) ! ...WVleo

I used to work part time at a pawn shop and was lucky enought to put stuff on Layaway with an employee discount. I was spending 1/2 my paycheck on my layaway stuff

Congrats on getting back into the workforce, its good to hear about a Vet getting more than just the shaft for a change. :) More $$ than just your disability checks is a good thing, too.

Excellent at finding a place back in the work force.

Working at a gun shop can be a drain......on your wallet.

The time I spent working at them was a perpetual struggle from keeping my meathooks off the merchandise.

I already spend a large chunk of my money on guns, ammo, mags, ect., now it looks like I'll be spending it mainly in one store.

The downside of working in a gunshop appears to be that working with guns is starting to become a chore, but atleast it's not boring.

Sounds awesome. I know how great it is to work with what you love. I recently got a part time job at a local country club. Being a full time student, I don't have a lot of money to spare playing golf. Now I golf almost every day for free. (Golf is my 2nd love)

Kind of off topic. Just saying, if you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life.
I shudder to think what it would be like if I worked at a gun store. I'd never get paid and at the end of the month, I'd owe them money.

I don't know how you got "them" to approve it - but congrats!

Between my USN retirement, my Civil Service retirement, and now my 100% disabled vet pension - they won't let me work ANYWHERE.... (well, I can WORK, just can't get PAID, lol)

But... I do the same thing here at a local shop, but I work WHEN I want for "store credit" - maybe not as good as a paycheck, but I spend all I make there on this hobby anyway, lol.

I'm able to avoid the "doldrums" of work by only working when I want to... He calls me on saturday night and says "what do you want to work next week" and I tell him if, when, or NOT at all. We're good friends, so he appreciates not just having a body in the shop, but somebody he trusts to keep an eye on things (like other employees) if he has to leave the shop for a bit.

I moved up here to MO from AR five years ago....
(sorry, but I can't say as I MISS it, lol)

Be careful!! When she was in college we urged our daughter to look for a part-time job to help her through school, and she ended up getting a job at an Ann Taylor clothing store. I don't think she EVER brought any money home, but she was one of the best-dressed students on campus! :D

Today I did my first background check on a customer (actually two, both passed). The procedure is pretty straight forward, pretty much reading right off the 4473. Just have to triple check that the form is fully filled out and correct, easypeasy.

Toforo

Which gunshop in Columbia? I go through there for work a lot and like to check them all out.

Birdshooter- any one of the FamilyPawns....

But for hanging out, I like PowderHorn (they don't have a website) GREAT selection of everything from handguns, rifles, to archery - WITH an indoor archery range

If you want to make fun of people, go to Grandpa's Guns off the Lake of the Woods exit - we're still making fun of Tim the owner for shooting himself in the hand while cleaning a new Kahr.

Columbia is an awesome place for this hobby - MidWay is two miles from my backdoor (call and place your order, go pick it up in an hour - NO delivery charges)
Graf's in Mexico is a bit off the beaten path (go north off of I-70 at the Kingdom City exit) but well worth the 15 minutes north off of I-70.

Ammo Alley on 63 almost at JeffCity

Heck the only "Big Box" store here is BassPro and the guys behind the gun counter all work part-time at OTHER gun stores, lol.

Free range up at FingerLakes/RockyForks state park off of 63 - and there's the indoor range TargetMaster.

Bianchi Cup has been this week in Columbia at Green Valley Gun Club, but it's been rain-delays all week; they hope to finish this weekend.

Drop me a PM next time you drive through....
