I know im probably posting this too soon but i found a 30-06 forsale at a local gun shop and didnt get to look at it but for just a sec.(chasing a 3 year old through the gun dept. who thinks hes a cowboy and needs to shoot every cowboy gun in the store:D) anyways.... it was a lever action thats about all i know, it was a great looking gun and ive never seen a lever action 30-06, it wasnt the same as my Winchester 30-30 i cant really explain the difference but it was cool it was priced at around 530-560 i know i dont have much info i will try to get more.. but any ideas on what it might be or pics or value you guys are my info source on good rifle so i thought id ask u first?
 
I may have been a browning BLR. That is the only 30-06 lever gun that I know of.
 
I think i remember it saying browning for the second i had it in my hand do you know much about em
 
its not a bad gun shop but im not sure about there prices we got a matching 1959 romy for 178 bucks without even knowing it on either end but ive also seen a lever action repeater or over under shot gun thats not worth 200 bucks priced like they were gold plated so im just trying to get a general idea so the next time i stop in which is often i might have some things to look for
 
i just looked at the two and i think it was the Win. 1895 after looking at the pics it definetly wasnt the browning it was used in pretty good shape for the short time i seen it what do you think roughly what a 1895 fair to good range would be worth at a local mom and pops shop i dont want to rob my local buisiness by i dont want to betaken for a ride either :)
 
The Browning BLR is a good gun and has a box magazine. The lever also has a short throw. Very nice guns. You will like it.
 
Take another look at it, if its a 1895 and it is a browning made one, I would get it for that price. In the 80s browning did a small run (also the barrel will be marked Made in japan) I believe they only made 5000 in 30-06 and 1 or 2k in 30-40 krag. I have one of each. They don't have the useless tang safety that the current winchester made ones do either. That run of them in the 80s are closer to the original and somewhat sought after, though there ain't many out there. IMO the 1895 is about as pretty a rifle ever made.
 
I also think the price is reasonable for either the 95 Winchester or Browning which ever one it is. They are not a lightweight rifle.
 
thanks for all the info i was going to go shooting today but its pouring rain so im gonna try to make it down to the gun shop and get some more info, I let everyone know how it goes
 
Browning BLR and Winchester 1895 are the only .30-06 levers I know of.

If you want and can afford it, then buy. Both rifles are very good quality, and you couldn't possibly go wrong with either one.

I'll second that, I would love to have one in .405 win, although an '06 version would be much more economical to shoot/reload. There don't seem to be too many of them floating around in any caliber, at least around here.
 
well i went back and it was a browning BLR it was in real nice shape had the gold browning buck on the trigger guard, and it is made in japan for 699 bucks. so i was way off lol... Salchaketjoe it looked pretty nice i couldnt find a year were the ones in the 80s the only ones made i japan

original Winchesters were also made in 7.62russian(marked 30 Russian), and 30 US GOV(30-40Krag)

I bet there were others these are ones i"ve actually seen.

True not lightweights, but downright pleasant to shoot in 06 or 30/40, no handicap with 30/40 for hunting.

Bill Rights im not sure now that you mention it. which one is better to have in ur opinion or which one is the better value for 699, it looks fairly new and is made in japan
 
Ok i checked again they have 2 brownings both with straightstocks not pistol gripped a used one that they didnt know what year 699 thats the one ive been looking at and a new one at 799 is new neccesarily better in this case?
 
I believe Browning sells the straight stock and the pistol grip for the same price, new.

Looks to me like the straight stock has a bit more drop from the bore axis to the top of the stock at the cheek weld point. The raised cheek comb on the pistol grip stock comes in handy for some people. Try them both on for size. The straight stock looks easier to grab out of a scabbard on a moving horse or vehicle. The pistol grip stock looks like a more comfortable and ergonomically correct hand position for shooting.

I think the Japanese BLRs are out of production 10-20 years ago [didn't somebody mention that already?] and are highly prized by some. So that's why a used one is nearly as expensive as a new BLR. (The new BLRs are a very high quality rifle, probably every bit as good as old Japanese steel - you're in the "mystique zone" here buddy.)
 
i dont want this to sound the wrong way but i dont know if i can really brag about my browning made in japan without a little shiver of dissapointment from the eyes of the ones whos raised me, i dont need a lever action 30-06 i just love my 06 and lever action and figured why not have both in one i might as well by a new one, which isnt as fun as the rush u get when u know u just got a screamin deal:D

the 30 US Mod 1903 is actually chambered in 30-03, it can shoot 30-06 but as I understand will stretch the neck out enough that you cannot reload the brass afterwards. I was recently given one but I have not fired it yet. Very solid beautiful gun.
 
Believe, nobody "likes" seeing "Made in Japan" stamped on their levergun but the unfortunate reality is, they make the best quality leveraction rifle available today.
 
I've got a BLR in 270 Winchester. It's a pretty neat gun and I can get 1" - 1.5" groups pretty regular.

Hope you got the '06 -- won't be sorry, and you have a lefty around, they'll appreciate being able to use it!

Yes, I understand. Sometimes I don't mind buying Japanese products, since at least its not made in China. And yes, DO take that the wrong way!

About the other thing you're thinking,

I don't really know if $699 for the Japanese BLR is a great deal. One way I try to check that is using GunBroker.com. OK, so I checked for you, and the only one for sale knowingly listed as Japanese is a straight-stocked BLR in 7mm Rem Mag with a cheap scope in Washington state for $649. So your $649 is a fair price but not a great deal. If you were to find a .30-06 on GB for $649, shipping and FFL fee would easily bring it up to a total of $699. Check the 7mm RemMag out here - some nice pictures
