So long story short a buddy of mine at work is a sort of interesting character and although he is into guns and portrays himself as a gun nut he isn't really all that knowledgeable about gun stuff. He was mentioning that he couldn't find any 12 gauge slugs anywhere. I assured him that they were not hard to find. Later in the conversation he mentioned that he had a box of .40S&W hollow points and a box of .44mag that he had no use for because he doesn't have guns for them. At this point I saw an opportunity. I told him I would trade him 2 boxes of 12 gauge slugs in exchange for his box of .40S&W. He thought this was a great trade (and oh so did I ) well long story short I brought in the slugs and he handed me a box of ammo.

I didn't really take that close of a look at it, tossed it in my truck and called it good I did realize that the rounds were not hollow points and actually were just lead.

Well now I got home and looked the rounds closer and I realized the damm things are not .40S&W they are .45acp. They are only head stamped WCC 77

I don't own a .45acp pistol but I am sure I will in the future. So I think I will keep them and not cause an issue with him but I will mention it to him.

I attached pictures below because I also noticed that the rounds look kinda different that I would have expected. It looks like they have a crimp band around halfway down the round, not sure if this is a sign that they are somebody's hand loads or if that's just the way they are made.

They look like some Space Coast "factory" handloads that I bought awhile back for my .45

I actually use them as carry loads because I haven't found a hollow point that my 1911 will feed reliably enough for me but these feed perfectly. Mine don't have the crimp like yours do, just a light roll crimp at the case mouth, and mine probably have a longer OAL, as the bullet seems to be seated deeper in your case than in mine. I don't have any pics, but I can take some later on.

They are not a factory load as WCC is a military headstamp.

Not knowing the source of such reloads I wouldn't use them. If he is a friend he'd trade back.

Agree with Griz... with that headstamp and bullet combination especially, those are somebody's handloads; I assume now at least twice removed from the loader.

I wouldn't shoot bubba loads with no knowledge of the source. Either trade back or chalk it up as a learning experience.

I wouldn't even both asking him to trade back. Just let him know they are junk, chalk it up to a mistake, and go buy some new ammo.

Yes, they appear to be 185gr SWC and I agree with Creade. Don't sacrific your friendship, but let this experience revise your future dealings with this "less-than-knowledgeable" buddy when it comes to firearm-related trades.

Definitely not wadcutters.

In regards to the trade - I'd definetly mention it to him, and while I wouldn't outright state that a trade-back was necessary, I'd certainly make a point of mentioning that not only are they not hollow-points, they're not even the right caliber. If he's a decent friend, he should be happy to trade back.

Chalk it up as a cheap lesson and keep careful distance with your co-worker. Stuff like this almost happens to all of us, we let our guard down and you get burned. Don't mention it to him, but be more cautious. Maybe he's so stupid he didn't know what he was doing and really meant no harm, but he obviously can't be trusted from here on out.

Welcome to my work world. It's almost as bad as listening to most teenagers talk about cars.

He responded pretty well he still very sure that the rounds are hollow points even after me showing him some hollow points I had with me. He went out on lunch with me and picked up a box of hornady taps and we called it even. So all in all I got a box of taps for a few boxes of slugs.

Let him know they arent .40 and that he owes you a box of .40, what's wrong with that? Maybe he gave yo the wrong box.

If you want to be a REAL friend to him, I would suggest you enroll him in the most basic firearms familiarity class you can find, with 10 minutes coverage of bullet types and calibers.

Exactly right, Navy LCDR

A friend being less knowledgeable than you is no sin.
Help him out. He has demonstrated that he deserves it.
His deserves your support because he made up for a bad deal.
That's good integrity!

PS: Don't shoot those things, that goes for both you and your friend.
Find a reloader who can pull the bullets and use the brass.
He'll be happy with your generosity.

I wouldnt use them in my personal firearm but maybe a range gun like a Glock so the Kaboom can be blamed on the combat tupperware.

I'll give my opinion.

They are reloads, that much is clear.

Shooting reloads from an unknown source is a bad idea.

The bullets look like the dead soft swagged lead SWC made for bullseye 2700 match shooters, they also appear to have been knocked about in storage.

Unless they were loaded to be about 700 fps or less you will be very unhappy with the amount of lead left in your barrel after you shoot them.
