Ruger SP101 22LR

The article said that the SP101 in .22lr has been Ruger's #1 requested firearm since it was initially discountinued. There are a lot of folks that have wanted one or more of these guns.

I'll take your word for it. I would have made that suggestion to Ruger as well. But I would have said I want a better trigger than the old SP-101 in 22 which I passed on buying many times when they sat on dealer tables at gunshows for $300 all day long.

I have quite a few DA 22 revolvers (mostly Colts and S&W's) and I simply don't need to spend money on something that I know going in I won't like past the handeling at the store stage. Ruger is going to have to build a gun that makes me want to spend $500 or $550 on it retail or I will simply buy a S&W product because I know they will more than likely still be better (and more expensive).

If Ruger is bugged by this article. So be it. I have not seen the article. It is a real gun and they are going to make it. The question is when will it be available to the gun buying public versus gun writers/reviewers?

I honestly don't care when it comes out; month, two months, three months. I have plenty to shoot now. But if I were looking to buy and I knew Ruger was going to introduce it ... say in a month or two, I might delay any purchase until then. Single actions in 22LR including the Single Six have little appeal to me even if it is a 10-shot. Too slow. I have Colt single actions and don't shoot them or even want to. The next one will be a 3" S&W M63 regardless of what Ruger does and if I actually can handle one at a store. No place that I shop ever has one on the shelf and I'm not going to special order it or buy online. Then I will consider the new Ruger. If I like it, I'll probably buy one.

I want one........or two................

Sweet, a nice new 22 LR revolver to make all the better used older ones go down in price.

I have one .22lr SP101, 4 inch, half lug and like it quite a bit. Once, late in the day at a local gun show, I saw another with a price tag of 350 and didn't pick it up because didn't want to spend the money. Kept thinking about it and went back first thing the next morning only to find it sold right at the end if the show the day before. A guy helping out that vendor bought it. I snoozed and loosed. I'm almost certain to pick up one of these new SPs. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, Ruger is hot this year. It's as though they are listening to the shooters.

I'll get one. I think they are suppose to be released in August.

I agree DammitBoy, I would love an SP .22lr in the snub version (2.25 OR 3inch). I have the .357mag right now and even for a 2.25 inch snub it's as accurate as I'll ever need one to be!

I think that G&A released this story several months early, and I think that Ruger is genuinely pissed off. They just released the Single-10. Releasing the SP101 a few weeks later would have an impact on Single-10 sales.

That's the version of the story I heard Plus that it will be announced in August. Allegedly somebody severeley wee wee'd on their non disclosure agreement or it was otherwise leaked.

HALLELUJAH!! I've been wanting a DA .22lr revolver forever, and prefer Ruger. I was about to be forced to buy a Smith or Taurus against my will.

Thank you for listening to me, Ruger!! As soon as my wallet recovers from the 3 guns I bought last month, I will be buying one of these new SP101's in .22lr.

Let's not forget the MSRP states $799 on rugers website for the NEW 1911, locally people are only paying $650.. So if this gun is listed for $650 I would believe it to be priced under $500 according to OTHER SP 101 357 models... Can't wait, I been dreaming for this day.

Been looking at Taurus and problems, and S&W and price tags, Ruger has my money and maybe I will buy 2 WHO KNOWS... If they really want my money they would make it in 2inch

I have to say, I am no fan of long barrel revolvers, but with those wood inserts, the half under lug, this gun does look quite well.

Looks like this going to be a big hit for Ruger. I'm for sure getting one and quite possibly a single ten also. I'm pretty well fixed for SA .22s, though. Double-action not so much. I think I'll go ahead and put a reservation in on one tomorrow at my LGS. It looks good, too.

I like it but I also like the idea that it may help ease the price on used .22 DA revolvers. A lot of people will look at the new SP 101 at $500 or a 40-year-old S&W M18 with worn bluing and a turn line for the same price. Many will choose the Ruger.

I still think the S&W M63 tops my list due to the fact that I can get the baby pink S&W grips for it and my wife will think it's for her.

Several years ago, I was in the market to buy a stainless .22 handgun.

I had it narrowed down to a Mark III hunter, a Single Six Hunter, and a 617. I went with the Hunter and sold it earlier this year in favor of a dedicated .22 lr. I was getting ready to buy one in the next few months and am thrilled to hear that the SP101 is being released, again.

The rental 617 had a HUGE problem with reliably igniting the cheap .22 lr ammo that I was using. The 617 literally failed to ignite about a third of the rounds that I fired that day. It had a great trigger, but it caused a lot of problems with the ammo. I tested several .22s that day and none of the other guns had any problems with the ammo. I'm sure that this was unusual, but I think that it demonstrates what can happen if you lighten up a trigger too much with a rimfire.

The G&A article said that this gun will have a DA trigger to ensure reliable ignition. This is my preference. If I find that the trigger is too heavy, I'll pick up some wolf springs and test different weights for myself. The modular design of the SP101 makes this really easy to do this.

I'm not sure what they meant by that comment. Double-action pulls are decidedly not necessary to achieve reliable ignition. Single-action pulls, whether from an sa or da revolver, are every bit as reliable in terms of detonating a primer as a double-action pull is.

I have a Smith 317 that does have some DA ignition issues. It always goes bang from the SA position, but occasionally misfires from the DA mode. I have heard others have the same problem with their 317's. Mine works about 95% + of the time, so it is not really a big deal for me.

I would hope that the Ruger is 100% though. I am going to ditch the Smith and get the Ruger once they are out and available.

I don't know if I'll actually buy one, but I will definitely pick the first one up I see and look really hard.
Too many other things to spend money on right now, but an 8 shot SP-101 .22LR would be sweet!

My Mod 63-0 has the same problem.

If Ruger makes it with a smooth but firm double action trigger that improves with use, then they will have an absolute winner. If it is a gritty 12lb+ trigger, they can pretty much keep it. Years pass and you really don't reflect on the price unless it was a screaming deal, but you certainly have to live with a sub-par trigger which is why it is usually worth the extra money for a S&W or Colt versus Charter Arms Pathfinder, Taurus M94, H&R whatever and so forth. I will be waiting for these to hit the shelves.

I've got several Ruger revolver's both single and double action manufactured from the early 70's through to 2008 and none of them have bad triggers.
I've also heard that some gunsmiths are actually able to preform trigger jobs and some people replace cheap springs or remove a leg to lighten the pull if they personally want it lighter or if they got a gun with a gritty trigger and they don't want to shoot it smooth....

Triggers are very personal but in general I don't find Ruger revolver's to have horrible triggers out of the box although many of my guns were bought used.... Maybe they had rougher triggers when they were new but they are smooth now which leads me to believe that if a new Ruger came with a rough trigger it could be improved.

The G&A piece was released early, it wasn't supposed to run till after Ruger announced the new gun. I get the impression Ruger's not too happy about it.
The company says they're hoping to start shipping in August.
