OK folks. I am looking for an AK. Nothing fancy, not expensive - between $400-$500. But it must have an underfolding stock.

Henderson defense is selling a POlish AKM for $499, vs. a Romanian for about $389 from classicarms. Is the $110 worht paying for? The rifle is basically for plinking. I don't have an AK and would want to add one to my collection.

Thanks.

classicarms is selling the Romanian AKM for $489. Is the Polish as good as the Romanian made. They are both distributed by Century Arms.

I believe the general concensus is that the Polish rifles tend to be better overall than the Romanian ones (and the folding stocks appear to be more rugged). That said, people usually advise against the underfolders as they can be rather unpleasant to shoot. You might want to look into some of the side folding varients if you can find one (as they tend to be more sturdy). Since you're ordering it sight unseen, I think most poeple would recommend the Polish over the Romanian as you're generally rolling the dice a bit more with the Romanian rifles. Century arms in general has a poor reputation..I'd be sure to look up some of the buying guides here on the forum that tell you things to look out for and if possible try to find one you can inspect (and even better test fire) before buying.

Note that some of the major parts of the polish gun will probably be american;receivers, barrels and so on. The romey will be pretty much all romey. Most people like their romainian aks.

If you get an underfolder, look into wrapping the legs of the stock in paracord, I have heard it makes it a lot more comfortable on the face to shoot.

The romey will be pretty much all romey.

The Romanian AKS is also going to have American parts otherwise it would not be 922r compliant...all AK receivers (non-NFA anyways) are American as the originals would allow full auto fire and are not allowed to be imported, so they're destroyed. If you're just plinking, you'd probably be happy with either one, but you might try looking at Atlantic Firearms (they apparently have a very good return policy) in case you a Century lemon.

I would not buy a WASR. Check out the Polish AKMS from Classic Arms. The are cheaper than what most site are selling WASRs for and the quality is not even close.

To piggyback on this thread, would it be worth spending a bit more to upgrade from a Century Arms build to an Interams build on the Polish underfolder? The difference is about $100 on Atlantic Firearms. Id the Century Arms Polish build pretty decent or should one look for peace of mind by getting the Interarms version?

If you're open to a 74 the latest Shotgun News has an ad with a Bulgarian made AK74 from Royal Tiger Imports. I don't know how well they do the conversion but they have Bulgarian receivers, barrels, and other key parts like an Arsenal for $549. I would guess they are great rifles given the most important parts are real Bulgarian.

Bulgarian or Polish receiver does not matter as much as Mil-spec or Century barrel and assembly. Until about 2005 or so AK's were imported with the trunnions and barrels put together on a mil-spec assembly line somewhere in the Warsaw pact. Then the BATFE prohibited the importation of foreign barrels. Since then whatever Bulgarian or Polish gun you buy is really just a bulgarian or polish dust cover, gas tube etc. stuck on a Century receiver and barrel at a Century factory. So basically just try and buy a pre 2005-2006 AK, or a converted Saiga (Russian barrel & receiver), or a Draco ( Romanian barrel & receiver) and SBR it or add a long muzzle break.

classicarms.us has converted Saigas for $499. I'd get one of those and whatever aftermarket folding stock I wanted.

Arsenal and the one i mentioned from Royal Tiger have imported Bulgarian rifles in a sporterized form just like a Saiga and then convert to military configuration. These guns have imported barrels, receiver, carriers, etc. American parts are added only to meet 922r compliance, install pistol grip and a few other items for an "authentic" AK look. Of course there are also imported Bulgarian parts kits that are built on american receivers and with american barrels.

There is alot of huh, maybe,922r well meant info here, but the romey 10 I bought four years ago, with a tapco trigger group, thank god, has a romey barrel. Most people who have bought romey aks like them, especially since four years ago they were 100 bucks less than now. Even the wasrs with the front sights and gas tube blocks(century) out of line turned out alright cause of the ease of repair. Also, the receiver on an ak is probably the one part that will not cause problems,atehelstan...no offence, but it's too long to spell out. best wishes.
