Looking for a good pistol

My vote is for the M&P also. I do own a Glock 21sf & I love the way it feels with a pachmeyr grip, but I do have large hands. I like the M&P because the largest back strap is perfect for me. The M&P gives you different grip sizes with the three back straps that come with it. S&W did well with the M&P line of guns. You could do worse.

I'd like to have the full bird someday, but not the shiny obnoxious ones that are out there. They would be perfect for not-so-concealed carry.

The Sig P250 is affordable, comes in 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 ACP, and has different sized frames that can be bought to fit your hand.

I'm really sorry about this question but what is a "SA"? I think on another post I said something about needing a dictionary for the abbreviations that are tossed around on these websites. They are a little expensive but the Kahr's are great. I have 17 autoloading handguns and I keep pulling a K9 out of the safe when I head out...

Just to make it more confusing for ya it is Also "Single action" sometimes depending on how you are using it. Also my vote would go to the cz 97b or the 75b both are great pistol but the 75b is slimmer, I CCW a cz 75b so I guess i'm a little bais

You mentioned the Springfield 1911. Great choice! Good gun..beautiful...and easy to shoot..and very accurate. I warn you however..they are addictive!!

The Sig is a great pistol as well. I prefer the 1911..but either one would be a great choice. Have fun with whatever you choose!

Can you describe in a little more detail what you mean by "general use"? Range, carry, car / truck gun, home defense gun? Primary use will help folks make more informed responses.

What do you think the honest advantage is between a Colt made 1911 and a SA? I'm a fan of Colt, just because everything I've ever shot that they've made (like the Diamondback) has been great to shoot, but the price tag is always higher than other "comparable" weapons.

For me the main advantages are the better quality small parts (easily changed out in the Springer), the fact its made here in the US and that its one of a few "affordable" 1911's that comes blued nowadays. Those things considered I think the Colt is a better value over the Springer FOR ME. Now if I was a big Pele fan or Jiu-Jitsu fighter maybe I'd favor the Springer

1911's are the ultimate gun of preference. I don't NEED a beavertail safety or novak sights. I have guns that closely resemble the original and others with all the bells and whistles. I can appreciate both setups but prefer a regular old Colt. If I was buying a new Colt today it would be an 80 series 1991 or a Series 70 Reproduction. Pretty plain but near perfection for me, only upgrades I'd consider would be sights and a trigger which would be under $150. The XSE lineup is very nice as well if you know you want a few "upgrades" and don't mind the front cocking serrations. Gun market is also soft right now, lots of good deals on used guns all around, including Colts.

For a straight up range gun, sweet shooter, I've not found anything personally better than my old W. German Sig P220. That's the single greatest shooter I've got or fired. Everyone I know who's shot mine, tried to take it home

That said, I'm also very happy with my SA GI 1911, with the old school GI sights. It shoots straight, has never jammed, and has a great trigger, what more can you ask? I even shot it next to a buddies Colt (I misremember the exact model) 1911, and I really didn't notice anything different (other than the sights, but I chose those specifically).

But really, its up to the shooter. Sounds like you're leaning towards a Colt, not a bad choice at all.

as in the words of Mr Jrsmith. I ll weigh in my $0.02. I have been a big sig fan since the late 90s. But I do not have any experience with a sig p220, so I wont comment on the 220.
I do however have a Sig 1911 tactical ops that is just plain awesome. Great shooter no problems with about 2000 rds of standard fmj and hollow point ammo. If you buy any of the sig 1911 s I think you ll be happy with them. In my experience, sig 1911 is hands down more reliable than any SA, made in the last 2 yrs. I have a couple of friends that have colt series 80 1911. And they swear by them. So I think a colt would also be a good choice...

Bein' serious for a moment, we just need ta get you up to KCMO and let ya shoot all the 1911s I've got. You can try out the XDm40 if ya want, but I'm checkin' yur range bag before we leave (jus' ta make sure ya ain't "long term borrowin'").

I love my kimber, I sold a h&K USP 45 years ago to buy my series 1 stainless target. its more accurate and more reliable(the USP used to stove pipe about once out of 100-150 rounds). also the Kimbers trigger is so crisp, its like breaking glass.


I dont think you could get a more accurate or reliable .45

csa77: You have a nice pistola but its not the same thing Kimber is putting out there today, pretty different from the series II stuff.

I'd prefer pre-II.
