So I'm sending my Springfield armory operator off to their custom shop to get a carry melt treatment and I was wondering if they could rechamber it to 10mm? Is that something they would do? Could the operator handle it? When my life is on the line I want the 10mm.

Thanks.

Seeing as how the 10mm shoots a .40 cal bullet, rechambering to a .45 caliber bullet is not at all possible.

They might be able to re-barrel it to 10mm, but unless they offer a 10mm Operator model, I doubt they will.

What exactly is it you think a 10mm will do that a .45 won't?
Either caliber depends 100% on good shot placement, and the .45 ACP is far easier to control in fast follow-up shots then the 10mm.

If you want a 10mm, buy a 10mm....Do you need a 10mm when "your life is on the line"? Not IMO. Any properly placed centerfire handgun round made will do the job.

Can't be done , you need a new slide and barrel, case head diameter is to small on 10mm, you would need a 38 super or 9mm slide.

Frame must also have metal cut out it at slide stop, to prevent frame cracking by slide stop notch.

Actually you need a .40S&W slide (or just order a 10mm slide/barrel and be done with it).

Oh yeah and new magazines.

Zundfolge quote "Actually you need a .40S&W slide (or just order a 10mm slide/barrel and be done with it)."

Your plainly wrong, case rim diameter of 38 super is .406" diameter and 10mm is .424" diameter, is only a difference of .018" and the 38 super and a 10mm slide may very well have the same cut out at the breech face, depending on manufacturer.

Anyway the .018" difference can easily be opened up by simply filing it or by milling it open slightly and even a 9mm slide can be opened up for 10mm.

Its a 45 acp slide that can't be made to shoot a smaller caliber

xr1200, my point is that a .40S&W slide needs exactly ZERO modifications to work with 10mm (since .40S&W is just 10mm in a shorter case).

If you're going to go out and buy a new slide so you can convert your .45 to 10mm you would be better served by starting with a .40 or 10mm slide (often 10mm and .40 slides are the exact same part sold as "10mm/.40S&W").

It is is something the Operator can handle, and yes, they will do a drop-in 10mm barrel with changes. Have fun with it!

10mm haters gonna hate... :D I don't think CmdrSlander is asking about choice of caliber so much as he is about whether a conversion can be had.

Sound like it'll be fun. Post pictures when you get it back!

Go to brownells and try and find a new 40 or 10mm slide , most are 9mm, 38 super and 45acp. Caspian is one of the best options

Fusion or STI is probably the only source for one and most BIG manufacturers will not turn a present caliber gun to a different one. Most will tell you to buy a new gun.

The other issue is that it would cost you almost $700-$800 to convert a 45 1911 to another caliber which would require a different slide, when you take into account all the parts and fitting that is required.

None of the conversions are going to be a drop in issue, everything will need to be hand fitted, for accuracy and functioning.

My 1911 has been modified to accept all three slide assemblies for .45, 10mm, and 9mm/.38 Super. One frame can work for all, but the .45 slide has to be milled to fit over a .38S or 9mm ejector. I have found that a 10mm barrel can be put into a .38 Super/9mm slide with little to no fitting, but a heavier recoil spring is needed, as is the proper magazines for whatever cartridge you are using, ALTHOUGH, a .45 mag can be used in a pinch for a 10mm. The .45 breech face and extractor will never work reliably to extract a 10mm, even if the10mm barrel is used with it.
