This conversation came up today at the range. "What is the best pump shotgun out there today, the new Remington 870s are pretty cheap."

My response was that the old 870s are made and finished better, and cheaper. But that got me thinking about it. I haven't bought a new shotgun in decades, so how about some advice.

The two pump shotguns that all others are the Rem870 and the Win mdl12. The model 12 is no longer made and the 870 is the standard police and Marine guard shotgun. Next you will hear from all the Mossberg guys. Remember Mossberg abd Benelli are grunt issue guns. The marines guarding the POLITIONS are armed with 870s. Nothing wrong with any of the other good quality pump guns. Just the 870 is the bar that they all have to meet.

Saying that I have also bought one of the new 887 tacticals. 870 design updated to shoot 2 3/4;3; and 3 1/2 shells.Polimer armor over steel for durability and weather resistance.

Cheers,

ts

My understanding is that the older 870s are good for about 200,000 rounds. At least thats what I remember Dave saying.

The 870 is still the standard by which all others are judged. The new ones are still using the same design and I expect them to hold up just as well as the older ones. Granted, some newer 870's are leaving the factory with a few glitches, and while it shouldn't happen, these are easily corrected.

The Ithica is a good enough gun, as is the Browning. They just haven't had enough hard use to convince me they are on the same level as the 870. Maybe so, but I'm not convinved yet.

Another contender is the Benelli Nova. I personally cannot get used to the ergonomics, they handle like a fencepost, but in time may prove to be the best pump made. But once again time will tell.

Mossbergs are good enough for what most folks use a gun for, and lots of folk like em. But there is a BIG difference between "good enough", and "the best".

I always paid attention to the old farmers that used to come by the gun shop. Everytime we got in an old 870 Wingmaster, or an Ithaca 37, in 16ga, we'd never have it in the shop more then a day or two.

I've heard that the 37 can be finicky actually. One gunsmith chimed in here that he's had more 37s in for repair than 870s.

i really liked my old Ithaca Model 37 with a polychoke, but their hand fitting and non interchangeable barrels allow the 870 to become the best in my book

The Wingmaster is as good as it gets in terms of durability, reliability, and shootability in my opinion. But, all 870s are not Wingmasters.
I do believe a BPS is about as well designed as anything on the planet, but I cannot abide the loading thru the magazine part. I don't care where it ejects and i don't care where the safety is. The feel is different, but not objectionable. They are quite a bit more robust than an Ithaca Model 37. A lot of people swoon over the hand fitted parts in the old Model 12s and the 37s, but their designs require those close tolerances to work reliably, and have hence put a lot of money in gunsmith's pockets thru the years.

I honestly think this is more of an opinion question! So here is mine.

1. Ithaca 37
2. Browning BPS
3. Remington 870 Wingmaster LH model

There are others that I like but these are the ones I prefer.

The one that I already own and have paid off. The one that goes bang every time I pull the trigger. The one that I practice a lot with and know how to use by muscle memory.

Best Pump SG--Wow is that's a subjective kind of question if ever there were one (best revolver, best pistol, best beer, best woman etc.). Nevertheless, I love these kind of questions/debates as they are extremely entertaining (I read the entire thread versus the skimming/targeted searching of which I allot to some).

Obviously, I agree with the perpetual&standard replies of both the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 and importantly in my view they are both USA made products (though inevitably there will be foreign made parts in them in this new panacea-like 'Global' economy which in my view sucks not to go off on a tangent).

That beind said, some of the foreign stuff like the Norinco and Turkish Escort models are very good dollar/value/durability buys indeed.

But for me, I have to go with the 500 as it is the one pump I have always used and trained with and can field-strip blind folded. As others have stated, that's what it bolis down to--any 'reliable' pump of which you know like the back of your hand if you will is the best gun for the individual.

nova....once you get over the fact that its not an 870, its a heck of a gun. I grew up shooting the 870, and have shot many others. I was really uncomfortable when I got my nova (as a graduation present from my dad). I took it out of the box at the game farm (dad and brothers came to see me in my first semester in college and we made a hunting trip out of it) and broke 10 clays in a row...the rest as they say is history
