HELP, I need the opinions of you DW experts! I'm looking to buy a Monson made DW 744 stainless 44 mag with a 4" and 6" barrel. My friend is the seller and he says it's in "great" shape and has been shot 250 - 300 rounds. He says he'll give it to me for $700. Is this a good deal and will this gun appreciate in value? I NEED TO KNOW IF THIS IS A GOOD BUY OR NOT! Please respond with your feedback. MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

This is my first revolver purchase so I want this new relationship to be "just right" :)

Can you get pictures? It may be a fair price if it's in new condition. What barrel shrouds are there? Check Gunbroker.com and go to completed auctions. You have to be a member to access completed options but it's easy to do. The best sight for Dan Wessons is the DanWessonforum.com.

Assuming the 44 is in like new condition and has the box and all tools and manual it would still be atleast 100 bucks high . Now say'n that, You will not find a very nice 1 year old for anything thing for much if any less money. I have a blued monson 44 and it is a wonderfull shooter for sure with a better trigger than the 357 had stock. The 4" barrel would make for a nice hevy trail gun. Iy has 6" barrel vented or non-vented . For most the vented thru the barrel and shroud is a bit of a pain to keep clean. Those heavy revolvers or fairly mid to shot even with some very hot loads. Check out DanWesson forums. There a couple guys there that have companies that make dw accessories and custom grips...

Not an outstanding deal, but if a 4" .44 magnum is important to you, then it works. On the other hand, if you bought a 4" and a 6" quality revolver in any brand, they would cost you a lot more than that. I have many DW's in .22 thru .44, they are fine revolvers.

At one point I was looking for that exact gun/combo. I would have paid 900 had it been a complete set, but I never did. You will see people go both ways on DW guns. A lot of DW haters out there. One thing no one will take away from them is how accurate they are. I say pull the trigger.

I bought a different 44 Mag that I absolutely love and can carry, but that's a different story. Things work out for a reason I guess.

You and your friend take it to the range and you try it out. Dan Wessons aren't for everyone, but if you like it, buy it. They are larger and heavier than a S&W, (much like a Ruger Redhawk), but they are very accurate and can handle extreme loads without any problems. Buffalo Bore sells a 340gr WLN load that travels at 1400+ fps.

I wouldn't give over $500 for it, and $400 would be considered a pretty good deal, but not an absolute steal (unless there's accessories/ammo included).

If you buy it, and if it has two barrels in any one length, one should be ported. That said, the ported barrel should not be used with cast bullets. A friend "soldered" the barrel nut to the barrel of his 44 by shooting cast bullets through the ported barrel. This was also a caution included in the original DW owners manual.
700 seems high. I had to wait for over a year to get rid of a four barrel pistol pack, all new, and it was priced at 700.

offer

Thank you for your advice. I actually offered to buy it for $700, but only if he included the depth gauge tool and barrel switching tool. never got a response. maybe it's a sign. I really want a revolver, but i used the money for this on a KILLER deal: a brand new Wilson Combat Professional for $1,800

I'm still waiting for a good deal on a DW revolver.

To be honest with you, you can get those tools pretty cheap. I'm putting a website on here with a guy I have dealt with before who is a world class person to deal with and will bend over backwards to help you.

The owners name is Eric and he has/makes all things Dan Wesson + more. The barrel tool and feeler kit gauge for that 744 would come out to be around 30ish + s/h which wouldn't be too much. Not to mention he is about start making 744 EH barrels, which I think look super sweet. Your choice, but I wouldn't let 35 dollars get in the way of a good gun at a good price. To be honest I bet you could sell it for more if you didn't like it. Gun broker has 9 of them sold in the past 90 days ranging from 650-900, depending on barrels, cases, accessories. I would say worst case you break even and get some range time.

I would take a good 744 and two barrels over any 1911, unless I could turn a profit on it. I wouldn't pay $1800 bucks for any 1911, personally.

$30

I agree, I don't want to lose a deal over 30 bucks. I guess the crowd is divided - half say it's overpriced and half say it's a fair deal.

Jibbs, thanks for looking up the recent sales on Gunbroker. I'd say that's a good indicator of what the 744s go for these days. Based on that, I think it's a fair deal for buyer and seller. Like you guys said, I can shoot it and if i dont like it, I can sell for about the same price so big loss for me. I'm gonna try again to get it.

The 1911 I bought was actually a very good deal, and I can easily mark it up at least $200 and re-sell. The original owner ordered it from wilson combat a month a go, fired 200 rounds thru it, and said "ehhh its not for me, I want an AR now." He paid close to 3k for it (inc. tax and fees, the Professional model starts at around $2,500). Seller was a very nice man and wealthy enough to take a big loss on it for a quick sale. I can't believe how much these full custom 1911s go for these days. they are excellent firearms... but I can see how the sticker shock can be a major turn off.

I am glad that I was able to sway you to the dark side (just kidding). For some reason Dan Wesson guns are very polarizing. There are a lot of people who either love them or hate them. I think that they are worth the higher prices people are paying, but others would only buy them at rock bottom prices because they don't see them as being desirable guns. Look at Red Cent's custom EWK EH barrel and tell me that it doesn't look sweet. I really only like full lug guns, and when I saw that side slab look of the EWK EH barrel I knew that I had to have one.

Granted he does not have any barrels or shrouds now, but he is in the process of making some. He said that 744 were on the way, and that he can/will leave the shrouds white so that you finish the way you want to so you can match your gun. Whats not to like about a gun that you can change barrels on? I mean really? A 2.5" for ccw carry or 8" for hunting. The best of both worlds in one frame. Its like the AR of the pistol world. And with custom guns makers like EWK out there, the possibilities are endless.

If you do end up with it, give Eric at EWK a call or email. He will help you out a ton. I have never done business with someone so dedicated to their work. It is a labor of love for him.

Seems a little high but if you want it...what is 30 bucks?

Some of us, myself included, get caught up in the deal instead of focusing on the gun.

Update - did i buy it???

Well... I guess things have a way of working themselves out. I really wanted the gun (Stainless 744 w/ 4" and 6" barrels), so I bought it for $700 and THE VERY NEXT DAY, I saw a like new blued BEAUTY 744 w/ 6" and 8" barrels and in a full pistol pack (orig briefcase, 4 grips, tool, guage, sight set, all documents, belt buckle, and even a patch!) for $600! I bought that too! I figure since I slightly overpaid for the stainless 744, God evened the deal and saved me some money on the blued 744. I love it when things just work out.

I know I know... I need to post pics of both. theyre on their way, bear with me. Now Im going to customize the blued one with the 8" barrel. Here's what I'm thinking:

- Trigger/action job
- Drill and tap for scope mount
- Leupold or Burris handgun scope
- Custom wood grips

What do you think? any suggestions or changes to my plan listed above? Thanks!

Yokron Go over to the DWfourm and check out the grips you can get there, nice stuff but ole hogues soft rubber work very well for hunting. Also seems like I read that EWK -eric was gearing up towards some large frame stuff?? Nice deal on the pistols pack. If your barrels are vented you do want to try to get a solid barrel . recoil is not bad with the 240gr 1520fps double tap loads i use. Just a mid push.
