I need a couple good mage to replace the ones that came with the R1. I works with hydroshocks and ball ammo, but the winchester just fell out of the mag. I knew I would have to replace them with either a Chip Mccormic or Wilson, which model 8 rounder do you guys like better?
The gun even ran a pro mag and another no name mag with 20 rounds. but not the remingtons with fmj's. The guy had traded the gun and thrown in these two extra long jobs, funny thing is they worked. The white box because of the stubby shaped fmj pointed anyware it felt like coming out of the mag. Love the gun, 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 feet. Shoret trigger reset, double taps are very nice.

I'll take any magazine with hybrid feed lips and a dimpled steel follower. I have no complaints with Check-Mate magazines so that's what I order these days. I have ten Wilson Combat ETMs that I use for matches that seem to work in all of my 1911s, but I'm concerned about the plastic follower dragging (binding) in the magazine when they get dirty. The steel follower magazines seem to be less affected by fine dirt and dust and the dimple on the follower helps prevent the second to last round from dragging the last round with it. I think the WC magazines avoid this due to the shape/angle of the follower. The WC follower is very flimsy and I'd be a lot happier if it were more like the follower found in SIG P220 stainless magazines.

Not Ed Brown?? I've been thinking about their new line of 8s. Right now I'm running Chip 10s, which have been pretty reliable (despite costing under ten bucks when I bought them).

There are a lot of decent 8rd mags out there nowadays, ACT, Mec-Gar, Wilson, Tripp, Wolff (Basically ACT mags with Wolff springs and I think Mec-Gar makes the ACT mags).

But my personal preference leans toward the McCormick Power Mag Plus mags. I have quite a few and they all work great and have good spring tension. A nice metal follower and the baseplate is not wider than the mag itself, which means you can stack them easier, or put two in a double stack mag pouch. I'm not a fan of the Wilsons, the plastic follower is cheezy and the newer ones I've seen don't have the greatest spring tension either. It's a great mag tube and the baseplate is okay, but that's about it.

Wilson is supposed to be the "BEST". I have a few and they have always been perfect for me. The McCormicks I own have also been perfect, and they are considerably less expensive. Either of those should do you fine. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

I have a couple of Ed Brown magazines and they have all of the features I like. Hybrid feed lips, a stainless steel dimpled follower and good springs. They look like they're made by Check-Mate.

But they work well and can take a beating, but I agree about the follower and springs. I've ordered a couple of Check-Mate followers and springs to test in two Wilson Combat ETMs. However, the problem with "upgrading" a WC ETM is that it almost costs the same as a new Check-Mate magazine. It makes more sense to buy ten new magazines than upgrade ten WCs magazines to C-M innards.

I picked up a Wilson Combat 8rd EMT and it works very well in my S&W E series. How much do the Chip McCormic mags cost?

I like the Wilson mags, but I've also owned 1911s that did not like the presentation angle dictated by the follower. In a gun that likes Wilsons, they run beautifully. In guns that don't like them, I've had good luck with Chip McCormick and Metalform 8 rounders. However, with the CMC and Metalform mags I only loaded up 8 in the mag and then chambered a round; I never carried them as 8+1.

I think it's going to boil down to which magazines your particular gun prefers. That has been my experience.

I will never trust another Chip mccormick mag. The one I had was loaded in my gun for 3 days when all the sudden the baseplate shot off of it and all the ammo fell out of the gun. It was never dropped or even bumped into anything but this still happened. I have had the cheap $6 mags from CTD hold up just fine. But for dependability I would go with Wilson Combat.

CMC or Wilson for me. Never had a failure on either, but throw the others all in a bail out bag full of ammo....

At one time I was a staunch Wilson/CMC guy. The first generation Tripps had problems. I haven't tried Wilson's or CMC's new variants because the Tripp magazines work. If and when I have problems, I will try the new Wilson's or CMC's. I do prefer the CMC's in the few guns that I run 10 rounders in.

CMC's, Wilson 47s have and do work in all my 1911 guns (22) EXCEPT:

1) The Springfield Professional, which comes with 6 custom matched Metalforms. I don't used the Metalforms, but run Virgil Tripps Cobra magazines. They work in everything all the time and like Bill Wilson, Virgil offers a life time guarantee.

2) My recently acquired Colt 21st Century LtWgt Commander (Wily Clapp model) would not seat a loaded Wilson. So once more Virgil Tripp came to the rescue.

In my CCW weapon which is that Colt Commander now, I run a 7 round flush fit Tripp magazine. In my older CCW Colt Gunsite Pistol I used to carry a Wilson 7 rounder with the thin steel base. I prefer the 7 rounder in my CCW magazines IN THE GUN. I don't want that spring under a constant increased pressure that a loaded seated magazine must tolerate.

As an aside, I have found my Colt Government 9mm's (2) and one Colt Commander in 9mm run better with Tripp 9mm magazines than Wilsons too.

When I got the 9mm's during the ammo crunch, I got 4 Tripp's and 4 Wilson's. Tripps were stone reliable, Wilson's had an occasional problem. So I went with the Tripps and bought 12 more. I have been very happy with them.

Just my way, if your existing magazines are stone reliable, hang on to them. They work. Just don't forget to replace your springs on schedule regardless of who's magazines you use.

Good luck.

How much do the Chip McCormic mags cost?

I think that I picked some up from Midway for around $10 on sale once. I'm not sure how much they are right now.

I have some of the McCormick and Kimber. I haven't had any issues with either, but I buy the McComicks if they're on sale. If not I'd likely spring for the Wilson. That is of course based on their reliability in my gun.

Mags

I purchased several Wilson EMT mags. All worked perfectly in all my 1911's, until I left them loaded and stored for months. They still work perfectly with seven rounds, and not so perfect with eight. For with eight rounds in the mag, at times the first round does not always feed into the chamber on slide release. I'm thinking of returning all of them to Wilson for repair or replace.

I have never had any problems with Wilson 47's, or Chip McCormick's (even the ten round ones). I have probably 20 or so mags of all types and all of them except the EMT's run well. Most are stored loaded. I have ones I take to the range each week for practice (EMT's, 47D's, McCormicks).

All of my 8 round mags fit flush, same length as the 7 round mags.

One reason I believe the Tripp magazines are so reliable is that they have a longer tube than most.

As to the new Wilson's I don't own any, but I believe that is what Wilson did with his new EMT magazines too, extend the tube. Maybe someone that owns some can fill us in.

Personally, I would not carry 8 round back ups that fit flush. Just to much compression on the spring for me to be comfortable with. I have always preferred historic reliability vs an extra round. The 1911's I was issued and fought with, were all using issue 7 round magazines in the mid to late 60's. And as I stated earlier, I still carry for CCW a flush fitting 7 round Tripp in the gun, and the longer tube 8 round Tripp on the belt.

If I was to carry my EMP/9 (vs my LtWgt Commander) I would carry it with one of the custom 8 round flush fitting custom magazines I have vs the issue/sold with 9 rounders from Springfield. Same basic problem.

I load my carry gun and only unload/clear the gun when I shoot out the old ammo about 2 to 6 times a year, and/or inspect/maintain/clean/lubricate the gun Twice a month.

I just feel I need that extra safety margin that a slightly less compressed spring gives me.

For those that do have a need for that extra round, good luck.

Fred

PS
I do know that at least at one time the Phoenix PD, as a matter of policy, carried their Pistols including Glocks with one round down in the magazines. Not bad advice, in my opinion.

McCormick...every time. I did have a problem with a 10 rounder I left loaded from Sept to the next May. The rounds had expanded the mag. I loaded the pistol hit the slide release and the first round went into battery but the second round bound the gun up. I call this my fault.
