ats-34 is a steel type, not a model.... but while we're on benchmade, the vex impressed me for the money. http://eastcoastgunsales.com/product.php?ID=8911

and a delica 4 or centofante 3 is only $53 shipped off ebay. a benchmade mini pika is $40

be careful with blade shape. the recurve design like on the kershaw blur and speed bump mans you pretty much have to sharpen it with a rod. (not to knock kershaw, I see other mfg's use a recurve, just no model names jump to mind, and recurve is not bad, just not everybody has a rod or thinks about sharpening it on the front end of a purchase)

For those that mention rough handles being bad on pockets, a little sandpaper cures that without destroying the look of the knife as long as you don't take too much off.

BTW

While it's certainly thoughtful of one member to want to help another member out, if there's a sale involved, we have a separate forum space for that.

If you have a suggestion that involves the exchange of something you currently own for value of some sort, may I suggest that you PM that offer, and possibly post it in the Trading Post/Accessories section.

Thanks.

Thanks, RD, I was contemplating that. Maybe a high grain paper? Figure I'll take off the clip and work that whole side carefully.

I'll give it a shot.

Back to the thread.

I really like the Buck Vantage Pro. It's pretty sharp out of the box and under $50 at most retail places.

My only Benchmade, No model markings just ATS-34 and the Benchmade logo on the blade not sure what model it may be?

I've had several Kershaw Leeks and Spyderco's. I wanted to purchase a Benchmade last week but after researching I bought another Leek. The Benchmades are good knives but too big for my style of dress. I purchased a combo this time. I wanted something metal to bust out a window and a partial serrated blade to rip seat belts with.

Tom, that's a benchmade Ascent. or possibly a mini-ascent, depending on size. I've got the mini-ascent 2. great knife. I like it a lot more than my delica. Eventually they cheapened the materials, and made it in china as a red class knife called the pika.

(benchmade also got sued by spyderco for using a round hole at one point I believe, so they went to an oval.)

greyling22, thanks I bought it new when I was still working and that has been a few years back. Blade is right at 4 inches IRRC.

Still looking. I want something that is about 4" long & 1" wide when blade is folded. Looking for a 3.5" to 4" or so blade that is partially serrated.

I'm really impressed with the angle and blade profile of the Needs Work. I am less impressed with the speedsafe opening/thumbstud combo (I just prefer holes, but that's ok), and the rubber scales (again, a negligible complaint). The price in particular is impressive.

That cutting profile and angle, IMO, offer the perfect balance between precision and power.

NB: I don't own nor have handled that knife. I just have enough other knives (waay too many to buy a Needs Work in fact) to know what I like in a knife.

I just bought a Needs Work yesterday, walmart has them for $36 and I needed a decent EDC pocket knife that I could use and abuse.

Mine doesn't have a thumbstud, I haven't seen any that did for that matter. Are you referring to the flipper?

And the handles are glass filled nylon, not rubber. I thought the design was ugly at first but the handles are comfortable and rapidly growing on me. The blade came shaving sharp and I gave it a good workout today on some cardboard, plastic straps and the like and its still nice and sharp, my balding arms can attest to that.

As for the speedsafe, this is my first assisted opening knife so I'm no expert on these things but I really do like the way this knife opens. I previously had a CRKT M-16z that had the flipper and I liked that but it wouldn't always lock the knife open without a really firm push/loosened screw. The Needs Work snaps out with authority and locks up nice and tight. It is still a little stiff but I'm working on breaking it in.

Mg, i stand corrected. Good to hear the scales are frn. However i just don't care that much for a flipper combined with speedsafe. Ymmv. Still a great deal!

I have a $5.99 Smith and Wesson folding knife, made in Japan. It has second rate steel, and a stupid looking handle. I put a wicked edge on my crummy little knife, and re sharpen it any time I use it for anything. A couple of licks on a piece of ceramic tile and it is razor nasty all over again. The cheapest knife in the world will do the job.
