On monday I thought it would be nice to go make some boom boom.
I get to the range and there is a member there with his two girls shooting a rifle. I just sat down and was going to wait intill they were done. It is a small range and you can't shoot handguns at the same time when someone is shooting a long arm.
A few minutes go by and they are picking up there stuff to go, I ask are you done. He tells me that there is a problem and they have to leave.
I ask if there is anything I can do?
He tells me that the rifle he is shooting is a buddies and he was loaned the gun and ammo to shoot.
Here in the action is a 30-06 live round. The rifle is a 270. The action is open and he is kinda upset with himself for putting it in the action. (he loaded only one round threw the open bolt)
Now he says that he must go home and try to get it out. It was in the extractor but the round was to long and it would not come out. He must have tryed to chamber it.
The rifle was some kind of gun that I was not aware of and he didn't know how to get the bolt out.
I tryed to get the bolt out as I would have on the bolt actions that I have. No luck.
I tell the guy, lets take the mag floor plate off and see if the shell can be taken out threw the bottom.
He replyes that he has no tools, I get my buck tool out and say that I have every thing we need right here.
With in a few minutes out came the shell threw the bottom and this guy was real happy. I think he was more scared of going back to his buddy and having to say look what I did.
So do you bring just a multi tool or a big tool box to the range?

I bring a screwdriver with the large and small reversable bits, and a set of allen wrenches, made quite a few friends with those allens...

Yes I have tools with me on the line but sometimes I leave them in the car. In either case the are available.

I take two tool boxes to the range. Just a habit I picked up as an SDM instructor in the army where I'd have to tinker with at least one rifle a day. Now when I shoot, I use a lot of custom ammo and have to change out recoil springs in pistols, usually to lighter ones to get them to cycle, and with rifles, I always need something to adjust the scope or what have you. I also tend to work on some of my stuff frequently, so sometimes range time is test time and tinker time.

What I really need is a small rolling toolbox with big wheels for the range and a small workbench top complete with a simple single stage reloading setup! Now that would be awesome.

I knew this guy in the army, he was friends with the Bde. CO, a vet but a civilian now, and he could just go to any range we had signed out for SDM training. He had this big dual truck, ext. cab and long bed with a big camper... The whole inside was a rolling gunsmith shop. All he did all day long was stay out on the ranges with us. He was pretty handy to have around in that he had a vice on the tailgate and all the AR armorer tools so we could do barrel changes on the spot or tighten them up if necessary.

Allen wrenches, pliers, couple of screwdrivers, swiss army knife, bore light, and on and on. It's little crazy. I have a technicians tool case like this.

I carry the tools in the upper half, targets behind them. Then .22LR ammo and magazines down below. I like this set up because the tools all have separate holders , they're easy to find and not bunched up in the bottom of a pocket in my range bag.

I think it is only common sense to have a few tools in your vehicle all the time regardless of whether or not you are at a gun range. So yes, I bring some tools; sometimes a lot of tools depending on what I am driving.

A set of drivers (slotted, Allen, Phillips, and Torx), cleaning rods, a Remington bolt disassembly tool, and various other goodies. I can remember when I went to the range with a military ammo can for my ammo, and now I take a whole pile of stuff that I likely won't use but might. Fills up a vehicle right quick.

I take a cheap multi tool that i got for renewing my NRA membership and one of these keychain screwdrivers from CDNN:

I carry a tool box everywhere I go, assuming I am in my vehicle. My range bag has various allen wrenches and a small screwdriver for sight adjustments.

A couple of screwdrivers, a couple of allen wrench's, a couple of punch's, and a cleaning rod.

I have a small range kit that developed over the years. Everything that has been mentioned plus some old dental picks, which have proven handy.

Each gun has a set of tools that stays with it. Sight tools are first priority.
Allen wrenches, screwdriver or whatever that gun needs for twisting fasteners.

Past a certain point it won't be fixable at the range.

I keep a toolbox in my truck full of mechanic's tools, along with jumper cables, a small floor jack, etc. Be prepared.

So yeah, if something happens at a range or something, I'll be able to MacGyver a fix.

I keep all my tools for work in the back of my truck at all times, so I always have access to them at the range. If I can put together anything from a bridge crane to a control panel with my tools, I'm sure I can handle anything I would encounter at the range.
