Can you suggest an optic for my cousin?

He's got a 16" 7.62x39 AR-15 with which he'd like to do some hog hunting. What he'd like is a 1-4X scope with a quick detach mount and his budget is ~$350. He doesn't need to be combat capable.

I rarely shoot with a scope so I'm not really conversant with his options. I did catch him before he jumped on something from NCStar.

That Primary Arms scope is similar to the Millet DMS. I was going to suggest that scope as well, but akolleth beat me to it

For $350 and quick detach? I'd say a Weaver V3 with an ADM mount. That 1-4X that was mentioned is just OK at best and is a pig. It's bigger and heavier than it should be. The V3 is small, compact and has pretty good glass. It just lacks the tacticool lit reticle.

Another vote for the Weaver Classic V 1-3x20mm V3 scope here. This will be my next "hog scope".

Lifetime warranty, nice glass for the price, compact/light weight, decent eye relief, and is a true 1X when adjusted at it's lowest setting.

It should make for a great scope mounted on an AR chambered for 7.62x39mm.

yeah either the weaver V3 or the Redfield 2-7 are great scopes. Another option might be fixed four Leup VXI, for hog hunting an Aimpoint wouldn't also be a bad option.

Nikon 1-4x20 Monarch African. Huge FOV, true 1X and generous eye relief. Burris PEPR for QR mount. Primarys Arms inhouse brand mount would prob work just fine too.

Thanks for the input folks; I think he's got some comparison shopping to do now that he knows there's a decent middle ground between NCStar and Trijicon.

I have this scope on my 3 gun AR. TA is right. The Weaver is light, clear glass, holds zero and is a steal. I have it mounted on a Burris PEPR. The combo was less than $250.

Maybe a different question but it is a consideration for me.

Some pig popping areas around my neck of the woods only require shots of 75 yards or less. I use Red Dots due to foliage and having to take snap shots for that type of shooting. I have other optics ranging from 1x4 223 Nikon up to a 4-20x50 super duper optic. Point of this post is to try and figure out what is the weapon and optic going to be used for and at what distance. There are good scopes on sale that can be had for $110 just depends on what where and how the hunting is conducted. Just a thought. The NCstars on ARs do not hold together (not in my experience). Wish they did but......

Pig hunting in my neck of the woods was pretty up close too. When I hunted, I preferred either irons or a red dot with a 2 MOA dot. Nothing faster at under 100 yards. There was no telling what position I'd be in when having to line up a shot and any scope, even a variable with a 1 or 1.5X bottom end, took time to line up.

Of course, the OP asked about a magnified optic, hence my above response.

If a red dot is an option, I'd consider something like an Aimpoint H1.

Well he just called me from the gun show (I didn't know he was going today) with news of his Eotech 512 he got for $360 (I surely hope it's real).

A side note: I have both Aimpoint Micro and Vortex Sparc red dots, and they are good sights. But I also have a Primary Arms red dot and oddly enough I seem to be a little better shooting freehand with its 5 MOA dot.
