I got a call about a job there. How bad are their laws? Can I bring my handguns there, or is it a miserable process like NY state?

I'm mainly concerned with bringing my pistols there. If they were legally purchased in WI, can I bring them into MD? I don't really care about CCW at this point. I will only take them out of my house for IDPA events.

Bring any pistol you want as long as it isn't on this list:

An assault pistol is defined as any of the following specified firearms or their copies regardless of which company produced and manufactured the firearm:
AA Arms AP-9 semi-automatics
Bushmaster semi-automatic pistol;
Claridge HI-TEC, semi-automatic pistol;
D Max Industries semi-automatic pistol;
Encom MK-IV, MP-9, MP-45 semi-automatic pistols;
Heckler and Koch semi-automatic pistol SP-89;
Holmes MP-83 semi-automatic pistol;
Ingram MAC 10/11 semi-automatic pistol and any variation including the Partisan Avenger and the SWD Cobray;
Intratec TEC-9/DC-9 in any centerfire variation;
P.A.W.S. type semi-automatic pistol;
Skorpion semi-automatic pistol;
Spectre double action semi-automatic pistol (Sile, F.I.E., Mitchell);
UZI semi-automatic pistol;
Weaver Arms semi-automatic Nighthawk pistol; and
Wilkinson semi-automatic "Linda" pistol.

Bring any rifle you want regardless of how scary looking it might be.

Full auto is no problem at all...same with suppressors.

Forget about a carry permit....at least until summerof 2012 at the earliest.

Oh...and there's some great IDPA events...check out Anne Arundel Fish and Game when you get into town.

Blue,

Why on Earth would you want to live in the PRM? (People's Republik of Maryland)

I was raised and spent 44 of my 47 years there. I ran away in 2010.

As has been pointed out you can take your handguns into MD with no problem. Just avoid that list of banned handguns.

And yes, forget a carry permit. Although there might be hope next year.

Buying guns is a bit stupid as there is a 7 day waiting period and they require transfers between private parties to go through an FFL.

I like Oklahoma. It's far better than MD.

Oh, and on a not gun related point...

The new MD motto is:

If you can dream it.
We can tax it.

Make sure if you are considering a job in MD that you are getting a big raise. You'll need it.

Ahhh, well, yes, you should go up and see the guys at AAFG, and also head down to Lexinton Park to shoot with JJ and company down at Sanner's Lake.

(Thurmont has an IDPA program too. But their strange, Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, schedule means I've never managed to shoot with them ... and I'm nearby every day!)

And if you're on the upper side of the state, come shoot with us (see my sig). Some of the AAFG guys make it up to our match every month.

MD laws stink, to be sure, and I wouldn't move back there for any job offer I can realistically imagine, but you've got to do what you've got to do, right?

In these economic times, people's priorities are screwed up if they pass on a good paying job just to not hassle with a state's gun laws. :rolleyes: MD is not bad compared to Cali or NJ.

...and hope they don't add too many "evil" guns to the list too often. :evil:

The laws here aren't too bad (globally speaking).

You can have any handgun (except for "assault pistols")

EBR's and other "assault weapons" have to be registered.

You can't legally carry and if you have guns in your car, you have to be going between your home and a place where they would be "appropriate" like a range.

You cannot buy the high capacity "assault clips".

Just come to VA whenever you want to buy something.

Baltimore and Annapolis counties have no gun shows.

EBR's and other "assault weapons" have to be registered.

This isn't true. :confused: Sales of them are controlled, and may be recorded (you can't purchase more than one in 30 days) but you don't have to register handguns or what MD considers "assault weapons" :)rolleyes:) when you move into the state or any you build while you're there.

SOME "EBRs" (not even all AR-15s) are considered "regulated" firearms which means they have to transfer as a handgun does in MD -- either at an FFL or through the State Police -- and with a 7 (generally more like 14) day waiting period. Then you get "Disapproved" or "Not Disapproved" (there is no "approved" :D), and you take them home. They aren't registered with anyone.

(Now Title II Machine Guns are registered with the State Police, (as well as with the BATFE, obviously) but that's a different matter.)

Like most of MD's more onerous laws, the "regulated firearms" rules are a point-of-sale issue. You can buy a non-regulated AR-=15 (anything with a heavy barrel profile similar to the Colt H-BAR) or a Mini-14 with a fixed stock, and take it home and convert it to a "regulated" format without notifying anyone or doing anything at all. In fact, a dealer pal of mine in Annapolis once explained to me that if I wanted to buy a Mini-14 with a folding stock that he had on his shelf, he'd sell me the mini-14 without a stock, and sell me the stock separately, and I could walk outside and put them back together, and no part of our dealing would fall under the "regulated" firearms rules.

Similar thing with standard-capacity magazines. You may not buy, sell, trade, loan, rent, offer to rent, etc. a magazine of greater than 20 rds. However, you can own and use all of them you want. A trip to VA or PA or WV to buy a big pile of 30 rd. AK mags to take home with you breaks no laws.

If they call back,tell them they got a wrong number.
Along with NJ , which I'm a native,this state is downright Draconian gun wise.

There IS more to life than guns, although some folks can't seem to grasp that - if the job and its benefits are a major improvement for you, then take the job - you can always commute from another state

Can you give me some info then, Spot77? I didn't see anything when I was looking around.

I never attended one up there when I lived in MD, but quite a few at the PG County Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro. Pretty good, IIRC. Or ride out to the one at the Frederick Fairgrounds.

Sorry I didn't check in here sooner. Here's a link that has the info you need. Looks like the next one in Annapolis is in December:

Definitely NOT the greatest show on earth :rolleyes:, but it's been a good way to kill an hour or two on a Sat morning.
