Move to Maryland?

Having lived in NYC and DC, Maryland and Virginia, I do not have as harsh things to say about Maryland as many folks seem to. Granted, Virginia is much more relaxed about gun ownership, concealed carry, etc.. than Maryland, but Maryland is not horrible IMHO. Unless you choose to live in Baltimore, that is.

There are waiting periods, etc., but on the other hand the state police does provide a "collectors" status that allows you to buy more than one restricted firearm (handgun) per month, though still subject to the 7 day wait.

Depends on your firearms interests. If you are a "black rifle" guy, then Maryland may present a few inconveniences (7 day wait period). If you are a curio and relic guy, life is generally pretty good in MD.

A CHP is very, very difficult to obtain. As others have noted, put that out of your considerations. There are around 47,000 CHP holders in Maryland, however most of whom are involved in or have ties to law enforcement, security, judiciary, or the infamous "politically connected". Otherwise you have to prove a "good and substantial reason" you need a carry permit - such as tangible evidence that your life is in danger, which is no assurance at all that you would get a permit, and even then you would likely lose the permit at renewal time if you cannot prove that imminent danger still exists.

Other than the

I lived in MD for 20 years. Loved much about it but did not care for the screwy politics, high taxes, litigious environment and restrictive laws regarding firearms. I managed to relocate to VA a few years ago and have never been happier.

In MD, CHPs only go to retired LEOs, pro athletes, the politically connected. Oh yes, the anti 2A US Senators from MD I believe still both have valid permits. My vote goes to VA over MD. I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the pending court cases to change things seismically. After all, MD is technically a may issue state.

What I don't get about restrictive gun states is that the politicians trust people with concealed guns and automatic weapons to protect them, but don't let you have a knife to protect yourself. So they can have a continual 24hr protection thing going on just in case, but you have to prove that you are in serious danger before you can do anything.

Not to drag the thread off topic, but the excessive use of SWAT thing is going on everywhere. Small town Barney Fife departments have to justify those homeland security dollars somehow, and chicks really dig men in black.

In all seriousness, move to VA.

As the other posters have mentioned, Virginia is a much better choice if practical. It isn't for me due to my job (the VA border is a 45 min drive away). It's not just 2nd Amendment rights, it's also an insanely high tax rate (state + local income tax runs about 8%, plus a 6% sales tax, plus property taxes) and cost of living.

This and this...

If I had any choice in the matter, I would not opt to move to Maryland. Especially with Virginia just a border away, it makes little sense to me.

Born and raised in Maryland (well, actually born in Washington D.C. but grew up in Bethesda), father and some brothers and sisters still live there; I left in 1976. You couldn't pay be enough to move back. I would consider Virgina, if the commute was short enough.

You can only have a gun with you at home or at a legal place to shoot (range or hunting). And you must drive between them nonstop, without stopping for gas, food, etc.

Oh, and it's ok to come home from the gun store you bought it from.

And don't be surprised if legislature passes more restrictions. They try every session.

Only like 10,000 ccw permits issued, ever.

VA is way WAY better.

And, there are very few ranges in MD. Only 2 within about 50 miles of DC, and only one outdoor, the Isaac Walton facility. Actually there is another indoor in the Gaithersburg/Rockville area, but you have to join and use only their ammo.

Not true.

As MD is quite a small state, most of the ranges in this link are well within your 50 mile radius of DC.

A new indoor range recently opened near Baltimore that absolutely kicks ass, too.

List of about 90% of the ranges in MD and surrounding areas:

Still not enough IMO, but given the amount of farm land available to shoot on in the far western part of the state and the eastern shore, I'd say the state is represented fairly well with places to shoot.

Maryland is such a small state that you have better options of where you want to live, depending on how far you like to commute. As others have mentioned, depending on where your job is there is Virginia. Pennsylvania is also good, especially if you are working along the Mason Dixon line.

Then there's Delaware, which is not bad. Open carry legal, CCW may issue, but no NFA. Cash and carry firearms after a NCIS check. Takes about 15 minutes. A bit of a long drive if you are working in Baltimore, but okay if you are working at Aberdeen.
