I recently posted a wanted ad on craigslist asking for old/broken firearms so that I may practice gunsmithing. There are no Gunsmithing schools in my area and I figure what better way to get started than to "just do it." Obviously I'm willing to pay a fair price for any firearms received.

I got one email about a Winchester model 94 32 cal(not a surprise seeing as how there were over 7 million of these guns sold before being discontinued) before my post was removed (also not a big surprise. I'm really not all that upset because I can see how this may cause legal problems for craiglist in certain states/locales, but I know that in my area party to party sale of firearms is legal.

So what do you guys think, should we be allowed to sell firearms via craigslist? I know that most wanted ads in newspapers include a sporting goods/firearms section so why is craigslist any different considering the site is broken down into different sections based on locale and the whole point of the website is to buy/sell locally.

Maybe someone should make a craigslist for guns? Do any of you know if there would be any legal issues with that? I'm aware of sites like gunbroker.com and have used them before but the problem with those sites is you need an ffl to receive the transfer because it's being shipped across state lines, but a website that orchestrates local party to party sales would be ok right?

i am all for it. Criminals will find firearms whether it be via craigslist or the want ads or a gun show, it they want them bad enough. I check out craigslist on a daily basis for all kinds of deals, Adding firearms to the mix would just make it that much nicer.

Well, two things.

Yeah, I don't see a reason not to. Its legal etc etc.

But, craigslist can pretty much do what craigslist wants to do. If they want to ban the sale of transformer toys, they can. Their site, their rules.

Around here, the code goes something like "hunting/personal defense items for sale, email for info". In the past, when I have done that, there has been at least one gun for sale, sometimes the only thing.

Im in the same boat as you are in trying to find guns to practice gunsmithing, im near the longview area so i understand the lack of schools. But what i do is go to the estate sales, and garage sales after hunting seasons are over and always pick up a few broken various rifles shotguns or pistols. Also if your wanting a truck load of guns to work on send me a message and i will give you a # to a dealer in winlock who has great deals.

Somehow selling guns in a legal manner is upsetting to the owners of craigslist, but the things that go on in the personals section is OK. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Thanks for the replies, didn't know about armslist or backpage. I agree that craigslist can do whatever they choose to do as it is their website. I guess I'm just a little put off by how unfairly anti-rkba they are.

Psa1m144,

What kind of experiance do you have? I know two guys in the Silverdale/Poulsbo area that have long guns that are in need of some minor repairs.

gunlistings.org is another. There are actually lots of gun classifieds sites. The problem is that not many people use them because they arent as popular as forum wtb/wts sections

kayak-man,

Not enough to be trusted with a gun that someone wants to use :p hah. I've only been tinkering for a couple months and I don't have any formal training. Everything I know I've learned from forums like this or youtube. That's why I want some old broken guns so I dont have to worry about messing anything up too bad.

I'll keep an eye open for anything like that. Afterall, us Western Washington Boys gotta stick together.

This may be slightly off topic, but are you familar with the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club? Every now and then, they offer gunsmithing classes, mostly on 1911s, ARs, 870s and the like, but if its what you want to do, you gotta start somewhere, right?

Fourth one down.

So Craigslist will promote prostitution, infidelity, and homosexuality but not the 2a? That's downright wrong for this redneck.

pretty funny how you can't buy a gun on craigslist but picking up a few chinese sex slaves would be no problem

Mike1234567 stole my fire. Craigs List is headquartered in san francisco so it's not surprising. I think ebay is also in SF. Go to Backpage.com. Listings are by city and/or state and no CA restrictions. If you want a good example of listings, check out Phoenix, AZ listings.

I live only 5 minutes away from KRRC, I have a membership there. I sent them an email about their gunsmithing class a couple months ago and never got a response. Next time I go up there I'll ask one of the range officers. Funny thing though is that 50% of the time that i go up there they are closed for some reason or another, I might get a membership to the Poulsbo sportsmans club next year.

Well I put my wanted ad up on about 5 other sites but I doubt they get frequented as much as craigslist. It seems like the firearms classified websites have split the market up so bad that you have to use a bunch of them to get the word out... Unifying them would be a very great idea and probably profitable for whoever does it.

It'd be nice, but like OP said, most (if not all) local papers with an ad section have a section dedicated to firearms. Craigslist is available nationawide, so federal law has to apply. But since states call the shots regarding many firearm sale laws, Craigslist shouldn't have a section for firearms.

Makes sense to me.
