while reading at my personal study this morning..aka, the porcelain throne, I noticed a slightly outrageous claim in the Cheaper than Dirt catalog. The September 2011, page 7 ad for DRT ammo states "....This makes it perfect for home defense or close quarter combat. Hit any part of the body to stop it dead in its tracks".

You have to wonder if this was the original meaning of the advertiser,or that the language got mangled in the translation. Taurus used to be terrible in this aspect. Some of thier adds would leave you scratching your head, wondering why the didn't hire a native english speaker.

I'm tempted to buy some DRT. Why aim if you only have to wing em for a kill shot!

Anyone else notice some outrageous claims?

They're on my radar. Compressed metal core (not bonded, not sintered) is supposed to fly apart in tissue, but remain intact otherwise for good barrier penetration.

They are not worth my money yet, but I'll keep an eye on the evals. They make hunting ammo, too.

Well... I'd say the ability to stop a fist in motion by shooting it is quite sound in physics...

Rule of threes... um... I guess can be used, ..... but it does stretch credulity to stop attacks specifically by saying you stop that part of the body.

I certainly would stop trying to punch you if you shot me through the hands... and my kicking would be sub par after you shot my feet.. but the Youtube video would probably make us both rich after the lawsuit :D

Kind of have this Monty Python-esque image of a modern Duel with the Black Knight..... "I blew your knee off".... "No you didn't!"

It's just a flesh wound!

Dnaltrop, your post made me laugh. As to the ammo claims, it reminds me of the fact that a .50 BMG slug can kill you with a near miss by the shock wave alone. You knew that too, didn't you? :)

A wordsmith chimes in

Regarding the claims made in the Cheaper Than Dirt catalog for DRT ammo, which they used to say stood for "Dead Right There":

It all comes down to semantics, and a poor choice of an idiom for the particular context.

"....This makes it perfect for home defense or close quarter combat. Hit any part of the body to stop it dead in its tracks".

They don't mean to convey that the body will be literally dead, only that it will be brought to a dead stop.

We have lots of idioms that employ the word "dead" in a non-literal sense: "dead right"; "dead wrong"; "dead solid perfect"; "dead reckoning" etc.

But, given the context, they should have omitted the word "dead" and just said,
"....This makes it perfect for home defense or close quarter combat. Hit any part of the body to stop it in its tracks".

At least the writers knew that "its", when used as a possessive pronoun and not as a contraction of "it is", does not take an apostrophe;
"Proper English: It's its own reward."

However, from a ballistics standpoint, the claim may still be debatable...

"Hit any part of this thread to stop it dead in its tracks"

Thanks Sam!:D

Oh..and I wish I hadn't heard that Monty Python remark. It keeps running through my head..

I quit shopping Cheaper Than Dirt when they were advertising (in the middle of the ammo shortage) a box of 50 Wolf .380 rounds...for over $70. They also claimed it was a great deal.

Be wary of ANYTHING on their site.

About those .50 BMG rounds. The shockwave must diminish quickly as you get further away from them. In the Army infiltration course those thing were going overhead pretty close as we belly crawled through Fort Lost in the Woods red mud. The pop of the slug going over head was pretty impressive though.

I would suggest that you were perfectly located to make most efficient use of that particular portion of the catalog... ;)

Similar to something my buddy said.

" Well, I can keep a 2 magazine shot group of 2" with my M9 at 30 meters "

Stuff like that I just laugh at and drive on with my day.

Read their "About us" section first.

If they put the same effort into a few paragraphs that they do into their R&D, I expect you're shooting copper powder poured into a mould with super glue.

They can keep their junk, I'll stick with ammo and bullets from real manufacturers who can compile a respectable sentence on their website.

I really despise advertisements like this. The type of ammo may very very decent hollowpoint ammo for all I know but the nature of the claims make me ....cynical. Really.
"Hit any part of the body to stop it dead in its tracks".

So if I shoot someone in the left pinkie, he's gonna die? Really?
I don't think so

It makes me smell "snake oil salesman."
But I can't say that type of ammo is less than decent, because I don''t know anything about it.

Gee I thought .45 ACP ammo would do the same thing. Oh wait that was 5.56mm ammo....or was .50 caliber, or was it something else? I think we've heard these claims about a number of types of ammo before, and we know how THOSE all turned out. :neener:

Yep, these days my CTD catalogues go straight from mailbox to recycle bin--just the same as all those telephone books that appear on my front step.

Haha, thank you for that.

On the subject of outrageous claims, the wife was watching some horor movie tis morning and one guy had a SKS he claimed he's made ammo for that exceded mach 20 !

New world record, 22,520 fps !

CTD catalogs are liberally slathered in hyperbole to assist in sliding your money out of your wallet without jamming.

Buy with confidence, nothing will be as described, guaranteed:evil:

Oh ho don't forget your CTD classics
like the 69.99 box of .380, with the 'we aren't jacking the price up, this is what it cost, buy it cheaper if you can find it anywhere else...'

Hit any part of the body to stop it dead in its tracks".

I guar-ron-tee it. If you hit ME in any part of MY body with a bullet, any bullet...and I WILL stop in MY tracks. :D

I will also scream like a little girl at a Justin Bieber (whoever he is) concert, and head for the nearest emergency room.

I will say they have a good deal on federal 9bple +P+ JHP ammo @ $17 otherwise I haven't bought anything from them in awhile.
