Breaking news from our local NBC affiliate is that a 'gambit of exotic animals', including Wolves, Cougars, Lions, Tigers and Bears have escaped custody near I-70 in Zanesville, Ohio. One wolf has been shot and killed already (by sheriff's deputies I believe). Local residents are advised to stay inside until further notice, and not to attempt to 'approach or detain' the animals.

So... What caliber for Ohio Lion?

UPDATE: Also Cheetahs! And the bears are Grizzlies! Local schools closed tomorrow, lol!

UPDATE: Giraffes and Camels on the loose as well.

UPDATE:

The list has been updated to include CHEETAHS.

Local schools closed tomorrow.

Reports are that the bears are indeed Grizzly Bears!

Authorities say there are "dozens" of exotic animals on the loose!

This is crazy!

Did these tool cops ever hear of tranquilizers? These were probably zoo animals and didn't need to be slaughtered.

Wow that sounds exciting. It is unfortunate that they are killing all the animals though, sounds like they are taking the "easy" way out of this situation.

you have to have a hell of a lead if you are going to shoot that cheeta

There is, or was a park not to far from my house. This must be wear they came from. I, think I, won't let the wife know about it. She is paranoid enough about the deer, let alone a bear, or hippo.

Mr. Blue: These are NOT zoo animals. Reports are actually that these animals are from a private collection... and that the animals' owners have been 'found dead'. No information on how the owners of the animals died.

Deputies have shot about 25 animals, and close to 50 are still on the loose. Deputies have shoot-to-kill orders.

News conference Wednesday morning. Reports are that this owner had a long history of frustrating local law enforcement.

Even though I, do believe that all deer should be exterminated from east of the Mississippi river, a health lion population would be nice to have around here.

These animals could be given to a zoo. There is no need to kill them. Tranquilize them and get them to a zoo.

They likely don’t have tranquilizer in their cars.... And, the range on a dart gun is very short.

So, as someone living in Ohio, I say nice shot officer. If better means become available I'm all for it.

Isn't there a nature preserve there "The Wilds". Is that it?

I say public safety takes priority over an animal.

Mr. Blue- not to be snarky, but just where do you think that Franklin County Sheriff's Office keeps an arsenal of tranquilizer rifles and hundreds of darts? Not to mention the very real threat of fast, charging exotic animals in the darkness, as these police are facing... I'm sure the Columbus Zoo doesn't have enough tranquilizer rifles to equip any decent sized force to safely engage a bunch of scared, adrenalized, fast animals in the cover of darkness. It is truly a shame to have to put them down, but you have to keep the damage to a minimum. I have a soft spot for beautiful creatures, but I'd kill a whole pride of lions to keep an innocent little girl from getting mauled to death, or some such thing.

Local 11:00 news just ran the story. Not much that I haven't told you, except that the owner was 'found dead' on the outside of the property, and that all the pens containing the animals had been left open.

No clue what to make of it. Any ideas what could have happened? I wonder if he committed suicide and let the animals out before offing himself? More schools in the area closed tomorrow. What a ridiculous situation.

Oh, and there are also giraffes and camels on the loose as well!!

Excerpt:

In April of 2005, a local businessman and livestock owner in Muskingum County charged with one count of having an animal at large, two counts of rendering animal waste and one count of cruelty to animals.

The prosecution laid out its case against Terry Thompson, 56, with the defense expected to offer an explanation for the condition of the animals in question today.

Word is that Thompson had recently been released from prison. Not sure if the above article is the reason he was in prison, or if it was a seperate incident.

The Wilds, is the area that I, was referring to, it is in the Cambridge, area. It would be nice if the critters could be captured, and placed there. Or one of the closer zoos. But even if capturing them was possible, do the zoos have the resources to care for them?

We thought we had a "large cat" escape from an owner in Medina Conty several years ago. The SO had M14's in their patrol cars procured from the feds years ago, but a deputy friend of mine asked if he could borrow my .300 Win Mag, as it was bigger than anything they had available. I'm sure with enough time, proper guns for the bigger dangers can and will be obtained. As sad as it will be to have them all killed, it is the safest and most expedient thing to do.

Update: "About half" of the animals have been killed. There are now reports of sightings near neighboring counties... so at least some of the animals are on the move.

I'm going to bed. Can't wait to see tomorrow's press conference on this debacle.
