I see that the TAPCO mags for the Mini-14 are significantly less expensive than factory mags. Ordinarily I use only factory Ruger mags in my Mini, but TAPCO is a pretty well-respected name and I was curious as to whether their Mini-14 mags are reliable, and worth buying. I would appreciate input from anyone who has experience with them. Thanks.

Ive got a 30rnder, and it will spit shells at you if the front of the cartridge is touched, or even looked at, in a way its not comfortable with.

I acquired a new Mini-14 Ranch Rifle not all that long ago. All the research I did beforehand, both online and by asking friends who had some experience with Mini-14s, convinced me to not even consider any magazine other than from the Ruger factory. So that's all I have, and they all run just fine.

Unless I am somehow convinced otherwise, the lower price of Tapco or other mags just doesn't justify the aggravation I would expect to encounter when using them.

That's my take too, Ringolevio. All my mags are Ruger factory as well. I was just hoping the TAPCOs might at least be good enough for plinking, but I think ill pass. As far as TAPCO being well respected, I've heard some good things about some of their accessories.

Ive had some other tapco stuff and while not super impressed, its been ok atleast. Ive got a john masen 10rnder that works very well, its a bit cheaper then the factory mags. Ill probably try a 20 and see how that works.

I too recently bought a Mini and was warned about aftermarket mags. But Academy had ProMags for $14.99. A few hundred rounds later and not a failure of any kind.

Steel ProMags for the Mini are no longer the crap shoot that they once were. I've been quite satisfied with mine. Avoid the polymer ProMags.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahaha!

Oh, that was great! I haven't laughed so hard all week!

Sure, buy and try a couple but don't be surprised if they work better as a doorstop than a firearm feeding device, but good luck to you.

Mine was absolute junk. Why go through the trouble to save a few bucks when it's so easy to get the good factory stuff? You have spent a good bit for the rifle, why be a cheapy now?

I'm not looking to "be a cheapy" - I have several factory Ruger mags. I was just wondering if the Tapcos are worth having at all.

Let's see, here.

You have a decent rifle, with an investment of .....what? Perhaps $600 to $900 ?

It's a rifle of a type which could conceivably be VERY IMPORTANT at a crucial time in your life...hopefully not, but we never know, do we?

WHY would anyone want to diminish the likelihood that the rifle will actually FUNCTION when urgently needed, just to save a lousy ten bucks or so?

Magazines are NOT ACCESSORIES! They are an integral, vital working part of the rifle, and also the easiest working part to damage or otherwise compromise in function.

WHY START WITH SOMETHING THAT'S ALREADY LESS THAN THE BEST? I've seen Ruger-made magazines at gun shows for under $20 for the 20-round capacity, and less than $30 for the 30-round magazine. I'd rather have ONE reliable Ruger-built mag , instead of three el-cheapos for the same amount of money.

Maybe your rifle is only a toy (right now)...but the unknown can occur at any time. Additional good mags can be obtained as time goes on and money becomes available....but that ONE magazine in the rifle should be the very best we can find.

Murphy's Law says that, if we have a variety of possibilities, the WORST possibility is the one most-likely to occur...meaning that (with my luck) I'd have a Tapco or USA Mag or similar junk in the rifle when I really need it to work. This is why no such cut-rate magazines inhabit my gun-room.

Bruce, that was the best explanation I've seen on this issue. You could use it for ANY firearm based purchase.

Nutnfancy (I know, I know...long winded, says "Dude" too much and a bit arrogant) did a very good review of the Tapco Mini 14 mags on YouTube last year. It was very thorough and the mags pretty much got a bad review for causing malfunctions. Supposedly Tapco has changed a few things about them and replaced some plastic bits with metal. Time will tell if it helps.

A new review on the revision 2 Tapco Mini 14 mags came out last week. Decen't review if you like Nutnfancy or looooong reviews. He seems very detailed and I'd give the Tapco mags a try if I had a Mini.

Yeah, I would be interested if I didn't already own factory 30s. Although, I would like to know if the Tapcos will lock in with a closed bolt. Factory 30s won't without damaging the top round.

I have several Ruger factory 20 round and 30 round magazines for my Mini-14. I bought a tapco 30 round mag to use for the range. I was very surprised, its 100% reliable with 27 rounds in it, so far. If I load the full 30 rounds in it, it will choke up. For a range magazine that cost $13, I'm happy with it.

I definitely would not rely on this mag for HD purposes.
