30 mph crosswind and only 8 minutes of windage?

I feel my best shots were on steel E-types at unknown distances between 300 and 600m with an M14 out of a helicopter (on the ground) with an instructor jumping up and down in the door behind me while throwing arty sims. I didn't hit every time. I did hit a few times. I was pretty pleased.

I've shot out to approx. 1400m. The furthest I've been able to shoot and then go look at my target is 600m. I have a honest 1/4 minute bolt gun I have only been able to shoot out to 500 yards. In November I will have an opportunity to take that same gun out to 2500 yards, although I will probably limit myself to 1500. Between now and then I will be getting some very detailed dope out to 500. If I can hit a 20"x30" target past 800 I will be happy.

So you'll forgive me for being a bit skeptical.

Have to admit I'm with Justin on this one.

I've been shooting 600 yard F-class this year. I enjoy it.

I've taken my .308 out to shoot at 1k a few times, but mostly just keep it at 800 and under. 800 is challenging enough.

Longest hit on game was 400 on a groundhog.

essayons21,

I was going to say the exact same thing to Jim Watson.

Great shooting for sure!

Running the numbers.

190gr SMK @ 3000 fps, approx 2500' density altitude.

Drop from 100 yard zero is approx 24.5 MOA and wind drift for a 10 mph cross is approx 6.25 moa. A 30 mph cross would be close to 19 moa. Wind report inconsistent with windage reported on rifle.

It has approx 7.5 moa drop at 500 yards which would be 17 moa from the 1000 yard dope.

Code:

Yeah, even without running any numbers the reported windage jumped out at my as being way off. I noticed others beat me to that observation.

I've shot in some really adverse conditions, but never with a 30mph sustained full-value wind. Those sorts of wind are usually accompanied by lightning, rain, and other severe weather conditions not conducive to 1000yard shots.

Lets remember I've been shooting this thing at a mile also. Can anyone guess my zero? :)

You said,
That's 17 mins up and 8 minutes left approximately.
I,
It has approx 7.5 moa drop at 500 yards which would be 17 moa from the 1000 yard dope. [ ie, you dial 17 minutes up from a 500 yard zero to get to 1000 ]

If you meant "down" instead of "up", 1000 yards would be approx 17 moa down from data at approx 1300-1350.

But not so much if ur closer. ;-)
You claimed to be holding 8 moa wind at a 1000 yard target with a 30 mph cross. That does not compute.

I'm looking at the scope right now. Its still at the 500 yard zero and set for an east to west shot with a wind from the south. I think I'm gonna have to shoot this thing when its calm outside to get it exact. But given what I did, the shots were still sound.

I just hope mine holds up over the next four days of shoulder to shoulder competition.
I am at the S.E. Regional BPCR Championships in Georgia.

These were my own handloads jammed into the lands

Ummm........I've played with freebore a great deal, and I don't know anyone who seats into the lands. Close, but not touching (or "jammed" into them). It also increases chamber pressure.

Most accurate loads I've developed had 0.008" to 0.015" freebore, with several different cartridges and rifles.

I'm sorry, Outlaw, but unless you can present verifiable proof of your claims, I'm going to disbelieve you.

I'm with Justin on this one, and Zak for that matter.

Best consideration, you estimated the wind strength wrong.

Regardless, there's too much doubt here to believe.

Go shoot an F-class match with it, and post a link to the match results. That's about the only thing I'll believe at this point.

I know at times a load will shoot best when into the lands. I don't know any competitive shooters who will do it. If a cease fire is called, or the round misfires, the bullet gets pulled and all the powder gets dumped into the action. Makes for a bad situation in a match, bullet stuck in the chamber and powder spilled in the action.

The competitive shooters I know tend to avoid anything that has to get loaded into the lands to be accurate.

My smallest group in a FCSA Sanctioned Match was in June 2010 at Alliance NE.
I shot a 5-shot 4.9375" center-to-center group. I do not have a picture, but someone in the pits did take a picture of the target, besides being verified and recorded by the Pit Director. My previous groupings that day were in excess of 12" and 1 of 72" where I had 2 shots off the target. I call my grouping pure LUCK, as I have not been able to repeat it.
The FCSA World Record holder has shot a 1.995" center-to-center 5-shot group at 1000 yards. This was done during a Sanctioned Match.

IF you are that good - shoot a sanctioned match, get it recorded and verified, then get on your soapbox and beat your chest to smithereans!

Otherwise, its all BS - and have I got stories to tell you of the shots I just barely missed!

Funny thing is that on another forum with the same pictures the story is a bit different. The OP states a different velocity, a different wind condition, a different group size,a different yardage, a different windage adjustment and a different zero.

It sure draws attention to the credability  .:what:
