So, I sort of lucked into a M85 today. Pretty happy with it (it will be the gun I carry on my hip when I'm hunting and will replace my granddad's old "service" J-Frame which has far too much sentimental value to be dragging through the mud) so far, but the trigger seems very "gritty" for lack of a better way to describe it.

Is there any way to get rid of this "grittiness" in the trigger? I presume it may be as simple as unscrewing the side plate and cleaning it, but I wanted to ask the masses here before I tried that (I'm not a gunsmith by any stretch of the word, but I'm also not afraid to pop open the cover and poke around some either).

It`s the trigger return spring "grinding" for a better word in the housing it`s in

I took mine apart & took a drill bit that fit in the well & lapping compound & smoothed it up alot .

I also have a bunch of springs for em ,but opted to keep the factory 1s.

Mine is the all steel model, is yours ???

Yup, all steel. A guy ordered one at my local shop, paid $150 on it, and then decided he didn't want it (and forfeited his down payment). My friend who works there knew I wanted one, so I got it for $150 less than they sell it for. Too good of a deal to pass up.

Initially, my 85 had a heavy, gritty trigger as well. After a hundred rounds or so, some of the grit-causers became evident in the wear patterns. A bit of detail polishing and now people can't believe that smooth trigger is found on a Taurus gun! The biggest culprit was the hammer was rubbing on the frame opening - the frame itself had a bit of a burr, and the hammer sides were rough-machined. A few passes on a sanding block and the sides of the hammer looked much better. Then some additional polishing to those surfaces and the hammer mainspring strut...

Externally, I did a bit of smoothing to the sharper edges to make it a bit more IWB-carry friendly. The slight rounding of the hammer spur and trigger shoe were the best things.

Gotta love stainless for ease of modifications without having to get it refinished!

Yup - Typical Taurus snubbie. Gritty trigger and sharp edges. I own 3 Taurus snubs and they are all the same. If you don't want to do the polishing route, get some spring loaded snap caps and "fire" a few thousand rounds out of it. It will smooth out.
