What kind of lever actions do yall recommend for hunting in thick woods?

I'm old school. In the northern pine woods, I like my Winchester 94, .30-30 & a peep sight. I don't bother with glass, a long shot up here is 75 yards.

I like a Marlin 1895 .45-70Govt. with a low magnification scope or quality aperture sight (or better yet the combination of the two with QR rings). The .30-30WCF will do just fine, and is certainly a better choice for anyone recoil sensitive, but I like the old punkin' chunker better.
I'm tripping over 'em at the gunshops that I frequent.

Buy the cheapest used Marlin 336 you can find and three or four boxes of ammunition to practice with.
Resist the urge to scope it and instead slap a Williams WGRS sight on the reciever and go to town

Using a MArlin 444S chambered in 444 Marlin (of course) with a fixed 1.5 power scope here

X's sight = expensive wgrs with the apeture removed that doesn't give the option of aperture in precision.

I carry a Marlin 1895G with a Weaver K4 scope. Though I have been reading some troubling reports of Marlin's QC going down hill after the merger. Buy a used one if you like. It will out last you.

one Model 94 trapper and two 20" standard 94's can't be TOO wrong.

Older Marlins are availble in 30 WCF and 35 Remington. Even olderones come in 32-40 and 38-55.
Winchester 94s can be had in 30 WCF, 32 Winchester Special, 32-40, and 38-55.
These are the most commonly encountered "deer rifles".
Other lever rifles can be had in 45-70, 405 WCF, and a whole host of common and uncommon cartridges.
Of them all, I like the Winchester 1895 chambered for the 405 WCF. A combination of easy handling and hard hitting, good for anything I hunt. Others find the 30 WCF is a good choice.

If shooting BIG animals like moose - maybe Marlin in 444. Should be plenty out there.
Point is, there are lots of options. Go by the gun racks and see what fits you the best, comes to shoulder nicely, etc. Getting aimed and ready quickly should be a natural sort of a thing. You don't want to struggle getting a sight picture. Once you have that worked out on a store model, go look for a good one

There are other good lever actions around, but the .30-30 Marlin 336 is my favorite. Do follow the "used" suggestion, though. Marlin was recently bought out by Remington and they are both having hellacious QC problems right not, to the point where only a fool would buy one.
The two levers I use most frequently are both pre-64 Winchester 94s. One is .30-30, and the other is a .32 WS. I enjoy both of them and don't really notice much of a difference in performance between the chamberings. As others have said it is hard to beat Lyman or Williams peep sights on a nice lever action. If I were in the market for another lever action now I would definatley look at the older used Winchesters, and Marlins. The rifles they produced in the past are far superior (IMHO) than those produced today.

If you happen to stumble across one, a Savage model '99 in .300 or .308 will do you nicely also. I've got a Win. in .375, also a Savage in .300, the .300 is a dandy out to 200 yds., without glass. The Win. in .375 will take down anything that walks in dark timber, elk included. Good luck!

my favorite is a 45-70 Marlin GS (pre marlington), wild west big loop lever, ghost ring sights with the wild west scout scope mount , qd rings and a leupold scout scope and a few other upgrades, trigger, extractor etc. mild to wild ammo choices and an absolute hoot to hunt with. just ordered some Lever leather stuff to dress her up...Christmas to my self!
