Had my first G17 malfunction today. It’s a Gen2 w/ over 30,000 rds through it. I ran through 3 mags and before holstering, I checked to make sure it was clear. The trigger did not reset. I tried cocking again and it reset??? After a few more tries, it failed again. Fiddled with it few a few minutes and decided to see if it would shoot (OK, generally not a good idea, but I just had to try). Inserted a mag and operated the slide, trigger reset and pistol operated through 18rds without issue. It worked, but it was time to find out what the problem was. After taking the thing apart (what a task w/ a Glock), I found the little spring that connects the trigger to the hunk of plastic that houses the rest of the trigger group was broken. It’s a long due failure considering the age and use of the gun. Funny thing is it still functioned (kinda).

Some stuff I've read:
Trigger spring is rated for 250,000 pulls. So you do much dryfiring?

Also, when the spring breaks the gun will function fine so long as the trigger is pulled back while the slide cycles forward. This is the normal state of affairs while actually shooting. This is why it fired fine for you through the entire mag even after it displayed an intermittent problem when you were hand cycling the slide (with your finger off the trigger).

In practical terms, a broken trigger spring malfunction might pop up when you're doing a mag change, for instance. Once you hit the slide release (with your finger off the trigger), is when you might first notice the problem. Once discovered (in an emergency) the solution would be to pull the trigger and keep it held back while racking the slide.

Again, this is just what I have read. I have yet to break anything on a Glock.

Spring is original. Ghost Rocket was installed about 1 yr ago, otherwise it's a stock G17. Good info Gloob, I think I might put it back together w/ the broker spring while waiting on replacements.

It is a super-cheap part; I would just order a pack of them replace it at whatever interval you detail the frame. Every 10k live rounds seems like a nice number to me.

Yeah, they've changed the heat treat on the trigger springs now and again over the years. At one point it was recommended to replace the spring every 5K rounds (at least in a wearable parts replacement list for LE .40's put out in '08) although I was told last year that the current spring is considered to be a lifetime spring (unless later determined its not, of course ;) ).

They've also changed the trigger bar's spring hole to create less stress on the coil at that end of the spring.

That's one of the good things about your Glock, it will still function even with a broken part ... and it only cost a dollar or so to fix! ... scratch that, call Glock and they might just send you another for free!...yep.

Dangit man, I'm a fool. Glock is located less than 2 hrs from me, I bet they would replace it and probably do a checkup on the rest of the pistol. I've already ordered a few springs, but if I get a chance, may see if Glock will repair it. Thanks.

I use NY-1 springs in all my Glocks after I had a standard trigger spring break after not so many repetitions.
Thousand and thousands of rounds through four guns and no spring breaks yet.
Now if I could just find recoil springs to last so long,,,

MtnCreek, You're right...they'll go thru it and replace everything necessary for free...of course, the gas to get there will cost ya, but if you got the time and would like to see the place, it'd be interesting and they'll probably give you some Glock Goodies as well...I'm gonna make the trip over there one day to check it out myself...
