The end of the road between Sodom and Gomorrah Tex
I was driving home from Port O'Connor and saw a guy pulling ducks out of his air boat and tossing them in the ditch. I didn't wanna confront the guy, should asked if I could have them. I'm thinkin' this might be illegal, but not sure. Anyway, whadda ya think? Bad ethics? I know I personally breast and eat all my birds or I'll give 'em away. Breasting 'em don't take long at all, ain't that big a pain.

In our State (you and me...Texas) it is a Class C misdemeanor to intentionally waste the meat resource of a Game Bird...IF it was in edible condition.

TPWD defines Edible Condtion as:

"Fit for human consumption, but does not include any portion of a game bird, game animal or fish that is bruised (bloodshot) by a bullet, shot or arrow; otherwise destroyed as a result of harvest; decayed or rotting or obviously infected or diseased." End Quote.....

Further, hunters in Texas are charged with maintaining the edible portions of the wildlife resource in "Edible Condition" or there are penalties for that.

That would classify as sportsman misconduct for about anyone I know. There are a lot of people hurting financially, and that could have provided some extent of a meal.

could it be he had breasted them out and was dumping the carcasses (sans breast)

Sure looked like a whole bird cause I was noticing the white breast contrasted with the dark neck and head thinkin' "redhead" which is abundant on the bays around here. It was a big duck like a redhead, too. I drove by at 70 mph so I could be mistaken, but the white breast feathers of a redhead against that black neck are hard to miss.

Hate those people

pisses me off TERRIBLY!!! i would have stopped, gotten car make/model/plate # and called it in!

I myself turned in a wasteful poacher about 10 or so years ago. i was up in the mountains hunting coyote and was walking back to the car. met up with a guy with a huge pack and a .22 rifle. we're talking as we walk and he pauses. tells me he absolutely HATES the squirrels cause they were barking at him the whole weekend. i watch in stunned silence as he quickly raises the gun and shoots this squirrel outta this tree. No problem right? it was another two or more months till the season opens, number one, and number two, i hunt those same squirrels for FOOD DURING the season! in total disbelief i watch him lower the rifle and walkoff, leaving the squirrel there to rot.

i excuse myself and boogie on as fast as i can, reach the game warden that lives on the property and report him. warden comes up with me, tickets the guy, takes his rifle and then i take him to where the squirrel was. gave him my info for the court case. just wish i could have been there when he went to court.

Well, that would definitely go against the teaching in the non-violent dispute resolution part of my CCW class. LOL Hate to have to kill a guy over a duck. Don't want trouble, don't go lookin' for it. I figure I probably should put that operation game thief number in my cell, though. I never thought to do it, never really saw something like this before to report.

clarification

sorry, was'nt clear on the whole get the info bit. i would NOt have actually stopped to talk with the individual, just drove slowly by and or stopped near and wrote it down quick and then moved on.

I would NEVER recommend physically confronting a possible poacher or someone alledgedly breaking game laws. thanks for giving me a heads up to make my suggestion clearer :D

I'm just curious. I am a hunter and I do kill things and eat them; fish, mammals, plants. If it taste good and nourishes me, I eat it and I feed it to my family. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than stalking and killing game to make use of the kill.

Just curious, how can you be so outraged? What you do to those coyotes is nothing short of tossing them in the ditch, or am I missing something?

If one lives in a coyote infested area, then okay, keep their numbers under control. But if coyotes are not causing problems - real problems - then what you are doing to those coyotes is nothing short of "ditching" them, no less than the ducks.

I've never met anyone that ate coyote. Even on forums.

You people do realize that there are scavengers in nature that will make use of the carcass, right? Coyote, fox, crow, hawks, other vermin all eat dead animals. It's not going to rot, it's going to be eaten.

so will duck carcass. I'm asking, what's the difference?

Personally, I don't care for wanton waste of any creature.

Could be you didn't see what you thought you saw. If the guy didn't want the meat he probably wouldn't have loaded them in his boat to begin with.

Shouldn't have been tossing anything in the ditch though.

It's not wasted. That's my point. Something will use it.
You're a text book example of why some Americans looks down on hunters.

You can't go blasting away at whatever moves and not expect repercussion, with the justification that "something" will eat it.

Me, as a hunter, I just ask you try and keep it ethical. That might be a stretch.

RhinoD I see your argument on its ecological points and agree. I think in this case it's more aggravation at the unsportsmanlike conduct of the fellow throwing the critters away.

well if he intended to waste the meat why didnt he leave where it fell?

do you think he may have been doing something ethical by tossing dead ducks in a ditch that came from "where"?

He was most likely a guide with more in his freezer and no time to clean. He had to get the birds for his clients, they might not have wanted the birds, he might have shot 'em, they might have filled HIS limit, whatever the reason. Lots of duck guides in that area with air boats. They build blinds out on the bay in the shallows and do the bay hunting thing. With an airboat, 90 percent chance he was a guide. Airboats ain't cheap and mostly the guides around there run 'em. Being a guide, he kills ducks every day for a living, or his clients do.

It's not illegal to shoot coyote and dump it. GAME, however, is another story. I THOUGHT it was illegal and the good folks here verify that. :D

It's AGAINST THE LAW....IOW. :D

But why did he bring them all the way back to the road to dump them? If I was to do something illegal I'd at least make an effort to hide it.

A teachable moment

ArtP, the waste of EDIBLE game animals is appauling to me. if im hunting EDIBLE game, i take it and eat it.

Some animals are called VARMINTS or PREDATORS; these animals are not usually hunted by man and have very few, if any, natural predators to keep their numbers in check.

It is generally considered good wiildlife management to control these population to prevent overpopulation and the accompanying disease and starvation. this happens in deer populations in areas that cannot support them and they lack the feed they need, along with laying them open to diseases. this is why we hunt wildlife, to manage numbers to prevent needless, prolonged, suffering.

It is no different when it comes to coyotes and prairie dogs. when P. dogs get over populated, then the stress and conditions bring about the Plague. When coyote populations grow too great, they slowly starve and are open to diseases such as mange that causes them to die gradually of exposure. that kind of death seem better to you? or a quick one offered by a hunter?

Quote: ArtP: If one lives in a coyote infested area, then okay, keep their numbers under control. But if coyotes are not causing problems - real problems - then what you are doing to those coyotes is nothing short of "ditching" them, no less than the ducks.

So, by your logic, as long as the coyote isnt bothering MAN, just let it over populate and get to such density that they die slowly of starvation and disease?? Coyote is probably the most successful animal in North America with its populations not being held in check. there are not enough hunters, or wolves to keep their numbers down nation wide, and they continue to crowd into urban and suburban areas. Attacks on pets, children and even adults are increasing (several here in my area over the last 2-3 years) nation wide.

by hunting these varmints and predators we are assisting these populations to remain healthy and at controlled numbers to preserve not only our hunting heritage, but a healthy ecosystem.
