I have a WASR-10 that's never been fired. The gas tube takedown lever is stuck fast. :banghead:
  • I know the regulation cleaning kit comes with a tool for this, but I don't have one and haven't seen one around, so it's a moot point.
  • I've read that you can use the tip of a bullet to rotate it. Bullcrap.
  • I've also read about using pliers, but I question the safety of that vis-a-vis the gun.
  • I applied a dab of gun oil and let it sit. Nada.
Anyone have a better method that doesn't require special tools? ...Ones that do?

I used small needle-nose pliers on my Yugo, worked for me.

Rubber mallet and a punch or screw driver on it. Just a good tap should do it.

Pull out your cleaning kit and use the the .125"x.5" slot in the kit holder.
That is what it's for.

Assuming you don't just have a dry sense of humor :)neener:), mine is made of plastic. It's a cheap kit.

I'm afraid to put any sharp force on it (the lever) with anything, because I've heard about people snapping it.

He's correct. The issue metal cleaning kit is a small tube that contains that attachments for the cleaning rod. It is stored in the trap door of the butt and is used for rotating those stubborn levers.

After you've run a few thousand rounds through it it should loosen up enough to do by hand. :)

Even if you break the lever it's pretty easy to replace.

I'd use a pair of parallel jaw pliers or crescent wrench to lessen the chance of slipping. After letting it soak in a good penetrating oil like CLP or Kroil.

Most of them are tight like that.

Use a pliers and turn it open. Don't worry, you wont hurt the gun.

The piece is made of metal. Ive never seen a WASR with that piece made of plastic, maybe the other poster has an airsoft gun?

After you open and close it to clean, a few times, it loosens up some.

I fixed it this morning. For the benefit of any lurkers who have the same problem: it can be done with a screwdriver and a small hammer; tap lightly and ratchet up the force until it starts to move.

The lever isn't made of plastic, of course; I was referring to a part for the cleaning kit-- it's a cheap universal one that I bought separate from the rifle.

mine was like that too.... Hammer and a screw driver works good, or like a punch then just tap it loose with the hammer

Just use a piece of wood, like a piece of dowel or broomstick, and a hammer. That way you get no metal against metal. You get the same problem with sks, too. Just cause it's an ex-commie gun is no reason to beat it up.

Once open, you can give it a few good taps and loosen it up a little.

Turn it up, vertical and tap outward away from the rifle..... carefully.

The sickle is for chopping off the heads of decadent capitalist swine who make a mockery of fine soviet weaponry by working on it with their fancy bourgeois tools like needle nose pliers or a rubber mallet, or for those dangerous "free thinkers" who dare to defy the collective by being smart enough to figure out to use a block of wood or something. ;)

Real Socialists need no tools! Everything we need, the Party has given us!
