Hi,

I got my new 91/30 and I just finished cleaning up the bolt and tools and bayonet of cosmoline. Now it's time to tackle the rifle. However, the barrel bands seem stuck on quite tightly, and I don't want to scrape the finish off. What do you guys do to get them off? Do you think a little dish soap in the joint will loosen things up?

you remove the front sight to get the front band off
as for how to get them to slip, you push the retaining clip down (some will not clear the band)
and then you tap them loose with a non marring tool, a soft plastic or so, it takes some work for some, others just slip off, some are varnished on...

Been there, done that.

I recently removed the barrel bands to get the handgaurd off. Do not try tapping with a screw driver. It can nick the stock. Try a wooden dowel or a plastic rod (fat hi lighters are ideally sized and what I used). Good luck.

A small block of a hardwood like maple or oak with the sharp corners lightly sanded will work as a "mallet" that you can slide along the stock to knock them off. A piece that is roughly 3/4x2 1/2x4 will do nicely. Hit the bands with the end grain so it doesn't mar the block too fast.

A couple of such blocks come in handy for a lot of things like this or other uses at the gun bench.

Hi thanks for the ideas. I put some dish soap on the barrel bands, the front one worked itself off, but the rear one was stubborn. I put a blow dryer to it for a couple minutes and it started to loosen up. A couple whacks with a hi-liter and handle of a screw driver dislodged it and it slid off.

Thanks guys!

Always try to use wood against metal/wood. You can usually find something around the house to use as a puncher.
