What is a deer stand? I know what a deer scrap, rub, even a deer bed is but most deer don't stand for very long. I still hunt and some times pause for 20-30 minutes to eat a apple or snack bar (I'm diabetic). I prefer spot and stalk. Shouldn't one call it a hunter stand or seat?

A good pair of binoculars is my favorite thing to have in a stand. Last thing I want in a stand is an Ipod, or phone or any thing like that. I enjoy just watching how the woods seems to "come alive" after sitting still in a stand for about 15 or 20 minutes.

^^^^^ Same.

A camera a GOOD pair of Bino's will keep me busy for hours...while also focusing my attention on what is around me.

Though... I admit to taking a paperback book with me on occasion if I am going to pull an ALL DAY hunt. But..I use the same methodology as Art when reading.

I DO have my Iphone with me whenever I hunt, but it is put on "vibrate" and never looked at except to check the time or answer an important text message, certainly NOT to play games.

But...to each his own, we all have different reasons for "going to the woods".

I just hate to see the way some folks are literally addicted to their phones, texting and non-stop communication/entertainment.

I was just joking. Most of the time I 'forget' my phone in the truck, although during deer season my friends and I send picture messages of dead deer. It really does get me how strongly some people feel about how others spend their free time.

Well...DON'T do that. It is a good thing to have your phone with you especially if you are by yourself. I had an incident this summer where having my cell phone with me literally saved my life, so by all means always have it nearby.

I do that as well, good use of the tool...but all that occurs AFTER the hunt. ;)

I am guilty of that sometimes, I admit a certain intolerance for some things that are really none of my business. I will work on that. :D

But I refuse to be Politically Correct, I draw the line there. ;)

I zero in on the natural order of things.
A wasp flying by,the fence line, birds of prey, the wind playing tricks on the brush, and noticing just how quick those damn coyotes always trot across the sendero.

Sure, sneaky-snaking is more fun, but I'd just as soon not be a mile or more from a jeep trail at sundown, needing to deal with a dead deer. Evening is a sensible "sittin' time".

Thats "Old Man Speak" for "I'm gettin too damn old to drag a deer all over the country" :D

Looks like "old folks"can multitask, hunting by observation and using "modern crap" like the internet. I also note that they know spelling and punctuation.

Shoot son, I can even walk and chew bubble gum on a good day! :D

No worries SkunkT! Us old farts get a bit crotchity after midnight. And like Flint said (man is he smart by the way) the cell phone is a great safety tool. I turn mine off but I always have it as well as an emergency Sat Phone in my pack for when I am not in a cell tower radius. Unless my cell is damaged or the battery is dead, the wife has a code to turn it on for the GPS locator in case I have incurred the wrath of nature or just did something bone stupid. Handy little thing there that most the new phones has from what I gather.

Sending a text to your buddy that you're hunting with is a good way to keep track where they are and what they're doing. And I let my wife know when I'm coming home or I killed a deer and I may be a little late.

The best part of hunting is communing with nature. But I have noticed that some of the young guys get impatient and antsy. Me and my buddy were bow hunting Sunday. He's new to hunting. The sun was up at 7:30am...by 7:45 he sent me a text.."this is BS"...What?? :confused:I guess he was expecting the deer to be lined up at sunup ready to get shot. 8:30 it's "I'm freezing, gonna walk around"...WTH? So 10 min later he comes walking up behind me. You got to be effing kidding me?:fire: Guess we're done.:banghead:

But to tell on myself...I missed a nice buck walk right under my stand one time cause I was sending the wife a text that I was on the way home.:banghead:stupid, stupid, stupid.

Carrying a phone is like CC for some people...you just feel naked and vulnerable without it. I never even owned one till I was 26 (37 now). But I don't leave the house without it. Used to laugh at people like that.

Wes, In many states thats illegal. Not sure about Kansas but many states that would be the same as using radios or communication to track wild game movements for the purpose of harvesting. BIG no no in many states.

Radios and other devices like that are illegal in Kansas to track the movements of game animals. ;) However, there is no way for anyone to trace phone activity. Sooo...if you wanted to, there would be no way to stop it. I for one do not partake.

So as to not hijack the thread. I just sit and watch the world go by. Saw 30 turkeys, a dozen squirrels, a pack of coyotes and a gazillion geese. No deer though.

Like some of the others have said I usually carry a book with me for those times that it feels like nothing is moving or happening. I read 2-3 pages at a time then go back to watching/observing.

I've spent too many hours sitting in a blind, when nothing other than leaves moved, to not take something(s) with me to occupy my mind, which helps keep my mind off of the aches & pains I may be feeling by just sitting there so long. Since I rarely get all of the sleep I really need, simply sitting too still and watching/waiting will almost always find me falling asleep. Where I'm usually at in a blind, there is no cell phone signal, but my iPad will have plenty of books for me to be reading, or allow me to post some notes to myself about things I wish to not forget; sometimes even one earphone is used and some tunes are very quietly enjoyed while watching and still listening for game.

I usually bring a book, do some reading, some watching, some reading.... and so on.

My longest shot here in the Texas scrub brush is 75 yards across to the other side of the clearing, so most of the time I can easily hear a deer or sounder of hogs coming out into the open.

I spend my time looking for deer.....I know that seems like a trite answer but I hunt mostly on the ground this time of year in heavy timber swamps, so i am listening for sounds of deer moving, creeping and sneaking along. The more you pay attention you will be amazed by the wildlife you see, and would miss playing on a smart phone.

In my early season beanfield stands, my iphone has become my pal, typically checking college football scores on the ESPN app.

I use deer hunting as a good excuse to not touch my electronics at all. I still bring my phone for emergencies but don't touch it unless it rings. I am alone with my thoughts and that's just the way I like it. I do know people who text and take pictures and still do good on their hunts you just need some common sense.

Art, you know we are too old for them new fangled contraptions!! Just don't even try it old man. You might give yerself some sort of trauma! :D

I've taken to memorizing Bible verses when I'm sitting in a stand. It keeps my mind busy and I only have to look down for a few seconds at a time.

If youre not paying attention to your surroundings then youll be missing opportunities.

I cant tell you how many deer ive shot that were only exposed for a few seconds. If i hadnt been paying attention theyd have slipped by undetected and left me with an "unsuccessful" hunt.

Play games or read a book if you want to...the deer will thank you for it.:D

How do you pass the time in a blind or stand?

Identify the cause of every movement and sound within the range of your sight and hearing.

Once you are halfway decent at that, you'll start to notice the smells of certain animals.
