5.56 uppers need info

A 10.5" upper receiver onto a standard AR rifle lower is defined legally as a short barreled rifle, which is subject to NFA regulations. The shortest barrel length allowable for a rifle is 16 inches without paying a $200 tax stamp.

You can go through the NFA process and go for a short barreled rifle, or you can just put it onto a "pistol" receiver that does not have a buttstock on it. It will still have a buffer tube, however.

Here's a nice carbine length upper by a top tier manufacturer for $400. Add a CH, BCG, and handguards of your choice and you're good to go

I did a little searching for my first build and thats what I ended up going with. I'm happy with it. At the time BCGs were hard to find in stock so I went with a Spikes FA BCG, MOE handguards, and a BCM Gunfighter charging handle.
