I have come up with some extra cash and I realize that rather than buy a new anything I want to become better prepared to defend myself.

I am curious if any of you any experience with any training organizations in Michigan and which one(s) are the best for training beyond the basic CCW. I know Michigan Defensive Firearms Institute (MDFI) is talked about quite a bit on forums and I have heard that Steve Fisher (Magpul Dynamics) teaches some of the classes.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Based on my experiences MDFI is the premier defensive firearm school based in Michigan. Even if Mr. Fisher isn't attending a class, his team is fantastic and you would be in great hands. Other Michigan based schools to consider would include: Ranger Firearm Instruction, Jericho Defense, and Close Quarter Tactical to name a few. You can also keep an eye out for some bigger names schools/instructors making appearances in Michigan such as Magpul, Dave Spaulding, Suarez International, E.A.G. Tactical and others. Keep in mind that these schools don't necessarily come around every year.

Congrats on making a GREAT decision to invest in some formal instruction and I wish you the best of luck on your search.

Last year I had my first experience with MDFI, and I will vouch its legit and good for the money. The first few classes of the year were posted just a few days ago. Good friendly folks! I believe any unsafe actions would be immediately noticed and dealt with as needed.

The classes fill quickly - *hint* hint..

Take the pistol you intend to carry to the range and shoot it until you become proficient with it. Then take a class.....chris3

Another vote for MDFI. I'm an instructor and they are one of the places I train.
