I am looking for a reasonably priced pistol caliber carbine, preferably in 9mm for the inexpensiveness of the ammo. But I am not opposed to other calibers. My main use for it would be for home defense and as a trail gun. But I know I will most likely shoot the crap out of it as well. Other then in specific cases (family heirlooms) I don’t believe in owning a gun and not shooting it, just like I don’t believe in trailer queens when it comes to cars. I originally was thinking about a Marlin camp carbine like my uncle had when I was younger then I seen what they were going for $1K+ and that’s just plain old out of my means. Any help is much appreciated!

im sure you can find an uzi carbine for a decent price, or you can always go for a stock less pistol verison and use a single point sling system, thatll give you alot more options

You can't go wrong with a Ruger PC9, if you can find one. Built like tanks and trigger pulls nearly as heavy. Readily available as high capacity mags that i've had no issues with as far as reliability goes. And the carbine functions as reliably as surely as the sun rises each day.

There was one in .30 carbine at the shot show, I saw the pic but I dont remember the manufacturer. It kinda looks like an AR and it takes M1 carbine mags.

Excel arms also make a similar rifle in 5.7x28mm but it needs factory specific mags which im sure will cost a fortune.

That's pretty cool! Don't think I need one though. And I love all those idiots dragging out their tired comments about how "the .30 carbine round failed to stop the Chinese soldiers in Korea with their frozen winter coats". Just what is the likelihood that round will EVER be needed again in combat against soldiers with frozen heavy winter coats? It sure was effective against Germans, Japanese, Chinese, N. Koreans and Vietnamese that weren't wearing frozen heavy winter coats. Ain't nothing wrong with the .30 carbine round for any modern uses, except maybe large animals like elk or deer, but I'm sure it would take a deer quite handily with SP bullets.

But for the original question.....I like my HiPoint 9mm carbines, they work just fine and are a lot of fun, and accurate to boot. Same with my .40 HP carbine. Put on a cheap BSA red-dot and go to town! Lifetime warranty is hard to argue with too.

I have had a Keltec Sub 2000 since they first came out and it has been very reliable. Mine has the G17 mag well so I can use the 33 round Glock mags. The best hing is it folds in half and will fit in a standard size briefcase.

I have a Hi Point 4595 and a Marlin Camp 9 that I bought recently. The Hi Point was $250 18 months ago, and I got a flyer yesterday from Cabelas advertising a sale with the Hi Point carbines going for $250-300. I paid $425 a month ago from an on-line auction for the Camp 9. It's being a pain to find ammo that's accurate in it, and I had to send the trigger group to Col Spr. to be worked over. The trigger is much better, but it still sucks (it's really heavy).

Neither of these is what I would call accurate, but for close in work they would be OK. The Marlin is picky about ammo and having the right magazine seems to be one key to reliability. The Hi Point is as ugly as sin, but dead nutz reliable. The only thing mine will not feed is semi wad cutter. For HD the Hi Point has the advantage of multiple rails for mounting lights and lasers. The Marlin looks like it would be easier to carry in the field, both guns came with slings, but their shapes are different. The Hi Point built in spring recoil system works well and is a good thing for the light weight shooter.

So I've got $650-700 wrapped up in these two carbines and I'm considering trading them for a GI M1 Carbine.

Nothing wrong with a GI M1 carbine. Those new rifles that use the M1 carbine mags looks interesting. Rock River Arms also makes an AR in 9mm

One of the reason that PCCs are hard to find is that the concept is dying. It had been felt that .223 carbines were too powerful, or too over-penetrative for HD use.

An awful lot of folks have changed their minds on that.

SOG was advertising Ruger PC9s not too long ago. Police trade-ins I think but I don't recall what they were asking.
I hadn't any interest as I am more than content with my M1 Carbine (with 110gr Gold Dot JSP).

This galls me as well, as if aping the drivel affords additional credence.

I suppose well beyond the .30 carbine's intended range, the .30 carbine could be hampered by multiple layers of clothing and gear. However, inside 150 yards, I would put my money on the M1 Carbine sending a 110gr FMJ clean through both sides of a couple wool coats and anyone unfortunate enough to be caught within.

The .30 carbine cartridge is no Thor's Hammer, but I believe the reports of it being ineffective to be grossly exaggerated.
I believe many of the accounts of failure-to-stop were in fact failure-to-hit or poor placement in tandem with engaging at ranges better suited to the Garand (beyond 200 yards).

Every weapon used in various wars certainly may have their detractors, but I believe most "relayed first hand accounts" against the M1 Carbine concerning penetration is aped poppycock. Even within it's intended range, the .30 carbine's slug does not fragment or readily yaw and I'd imagine, due to these reasons, it's indeed a deep digging horror when encountering human flesh.

PCC's are fun and I love my SBRed UZI.

But I already have a rifle.

With a PCC you get rifle like bulk and combine it with pistol like effectiveness. Not a good choice for serious work. Am I much faster at the same ranges with the UZI vs with my P226? Yes, I can hit targets in just about twice as fast with the UZI. But I'm still hitting them with a 9mmP round.

If I accept slightly more recoil, I can hit targets with my AK with ~1800 ft lbs of energy vs the 9mm's ~500 ft lbs. Also, the light varmint JHP that the AK is loaded with is less likely to over penetrate than the +P JHPs that are in the UZI.

PCC's are fun, but limited.

Damn that Excel carbine in 30 carbine looks nice. I like carbines, but my AO M1 has almost too many FTFs to make me love it. I'll have to keep my eyes open and check one out when they go commerical.

Oh, I also own a Ruger PC4 that had had the trigger smoothed by Bill Springfield (triggerwork.net). Much cleaner, but still very long. Still, it is not hard to get used to. Nifty gun, tough to clean and reassemble, but now that I've done it a few times it is no so bad. Kind of heavy, but has that "fricking tank-like" ruggedness that I like so much. One total FTF in 400 rounds through it, and that was WWB.

I have always loved PCCs and have a decent collection. Right now for an affordable carbine I would really look at the Suomi. It uses both stick and drum mags and the drums are very reasonably priced. They are robust and very reliable, the drums are also very easy to load and work great.

I also like the Mech Tech, originally I bought just the upper but got tired of swapping back and forth so I bought a complete 17 lower for $150 and it is now dedicated to the Mech Tech upper. with the high cap mags and an Aimpoint it is easy to keep 30 rounds in a 2 inch circle at 100 yards.

If you can find one of the discontimued MPA 71's I would look at it as well. It use the Suomi sticks and drums and works very well.

Last is not a 9mm but I wanted a carbine to go with my CZ52 so I bought a Papashaw (PPSh41). Great gun in a very flat shooting caliber than will penetrate a kevlar helmet.

My brother has a couple of the Masterpiece Arms Cobra carbines, one in 45acp and one in 9mm and they are very accurate and reliable guns as well, again mags are cheap for both.
