S&W model 19 or 66?

They didn't, except for a special order 4" one for some law enforcement agency I forget the name of right off hand.

However they were not the high polish deep blue of the Model 19.

I would suspect somebody had it refinished in black chrome, and tread accordingly.

Or it is a mis-marked Model 19.

Does it for sure say Model 66 inside the crane cut?
Or just on the dealers price tag?

I would pay $425 for a very nice 6" Model 19, maybe.

Older S&W prices are kinda crazy anymore and I have a hard time getting my head around it.

I paid $55 for a like new 6" one in 1970!

I paid $325 for a real nice 4" Model 66 four years ago.

So, $425 probably isn't that bad today.

But I'd flop four bills on the counter and see what happens first.

Its a $300.00 gun at best. Never pay retail or more for a weapon. And from a Pawn Shop I would never pay anything they wanted.

I don't see $400 or $425 being that far out of line if you can actually pick it up and coon-finger it before buying it.

Buy a used $400 gun at a gun shop or Cabala's and they have $200 in it too.

I have two 66's, a 66-2 I bought back in the mid 1980's for $150 with leather shoulder holster. And the 66-5 I bought 5 or 6 yrs. ago for $400. Both are snubbs, But I don't know how barrel length computes in that respect. The 66 is a great piece, and if in 90% condition they are deffinitely worthy of $400 - $450.
So far as a blued 66, I haven't ever heard of or seen one before. It's always been my understanding that the 19 is the blued version of a 66.

The blued carbon steel Model 19 came first in 1955.

The Stainless steel Model 66 came 15 years later in 1970.

$400 for a 'nice' shooter-grade 357 S&W is not a bad price nowadays assuming it has original grips. Check it out carefully for timing and carry-up and for wear on the forcing cone. The correct model number would be inside the crane, on the frame.

I'd walk in there and drop the cylinder and see what it says inside the frame. A buck gets ten that the gun is a Model 19, not a 66. If so, use this to your advantage. Point out the error to the guy behind the counter. Tell him you would have paid that price for a 66, but since it's really a Model 19 then you'd only do $375. If the guy can't tell the difference between a 66 and a 19, he probably won't know any better on the price either and will look like an idiot for incorrectly labeling a gun. I did a similar thing to a Model 66 that a shop had marked as a Model 60. Picked it up for a song and dance.

Yeah, I haven't seen a Model 19 for less than $400 in person (excluding the odd GB auction) since I started watching for them 5+ years ago. I don't think my region has seen a $300 Model 19 since the late 90s.

Where I live, $425 is a pretty good price where most mechanically solid 6" examples are priced around $450. 4" guns are often $500 here, and 2.5" run from $550 to $600. Assuming it passes the checkout, I'd gladly pay $425, though I might offer $380 cash and see what happens.

Generally the shorter barrels go for more. At least in my area. There are exceptions.

From the research I did before buying my 4" 66 the 3" variant seems to command the highest price. The reasoning is it's easier to carry than the 4" yet you get the full length extractor rod, instead of the 2 1/2"'s short extractor rod.

The reason for the higher value is because it was made for a very short time and there were far fewer made in that variation than any other.
