ugly guns

They've thrown looks to the wind and are emphasizing tacticool. A lot of them are just down right ugly. I used to think my sks was ugly but it actually looks pretty good compared to some of the stuff out there now.

You know I THOUGHT the type 94 Nambu pistols were ugly and weird as sin, until I handled one made before Dec 1941. It's strange LOOKING alright but it fits my hand very well, and even though it's got an exposed sear on the left side-- (which is safe when the gun is on safe) it's a strangely well thought out pistol COMPARED TO other Japanese weapons.

Ugly guns are like people with 30,000 posts on internet forums (moderators excluded of course). They serve a purpose but it's more fluff than anything.....

I have to agree with SaxonPig, Ruger DA revolvers are ugly to me. I know they are good, well made guns, But I cant get past the way they look.

Every now & again somebody comes along & raises (lowers?) the bar...:uhoh:

That's a sin.

Holy cow I was rolling on the floor when I read the post with the 464 lever action.

then I found out it was for real and not a creative photo shop job:eek::what::barf:

^ I am with 12gTim on that one! That's just wrong!

The days of actual gunsmiths putting together weapons is gone, so is the art of their labor. That is why certain specialists are in such high demand (still waiting on my leather), not to mention things like Colts being in high demand $$$. CNC machines are now the firearms norm.

I'll take an ugly gun that works over a pretty one that doesn't any day. People need to spend more time shooting and less time debating the aesthetics of firearms.

Yes, kinda, no. I don't care if my SD/HD gun looks like a freshly squeezed pile of dog s***, as long as it does what I need it to. On the other hand, a custom, hand made sxs shotgun with intricate engravings is a thing of beauty. (I can't afford one either, but everybody should be able to appreciate the craftmanship) What I'm getting at, is some guns are purchased for their beauty or their looks, others are tools.

I agree that a lot of this tacticool stuff looks terrible, but it appeals to some people. Yes, I'll still laugh at the first guy I see with that collapsible-stocked lever-action abomination, and every other one after that. The way I see it, tactical is just a look or a style, just like many others that came before it... ugly isn't new, and neither is the "the new stuff is garbage" attitude, even the oldest guys in here probably had parents who scratched their heads and wondered, "what in the hell..."

I don't mind "ugly" as long as it's reliable and functional. I own a few ugly guns--Glocks, SIGs, Rugers...no beauty contest winners there. What I don't like is "ridiculous". Some guns simply looks stupid, like the Chiappa's (don't even know if that's the correct spelling) upside-down revolver, the Hi-Point and the Beretta NEOS. 'Course I wouldn't want to get shot by even a ridiculous gun.

Agreed, entirely....but I do like that someone is at least trying to rethink the design. Someone very smart, with the abillity to think outside of the box, had a great idea, the execution made it look terrible though

I respect creativity. The result may be ugly in my eyes, but if it works well, I can see past ugly. Form follows function. Aesthetics don't necessarily follow either form OR function.

IMNHO, Mossberg didn't show a bit of creativity. They simply did a "me too" by marrying the current tactical fad with a traditional lever design. It's the incongruity that makes me snicker. Imagine John Wayne with body armor and his SAA in a tactical thigh holster galloping after some outlaw.

Or, maybe Mossberg has some marketing geniuses. They planned it as a joke. Even if the gun doesn't sell, it will get people talking and checking out Marlin's other products. Look at Hornady's zombie-max ammo.

Speaking of zombie max ammo...
Form follows function is true. That's why it is completely ridiculous to have more rails than a train station on your AR just for the sake of covering them up with rail covers. Because uh.. Ya know.. I might want to put a shotgun.. On the side of it..

The OP summed up my thoughts when I saw the SR22. It had all the potential of being a nice little gun. They could have made it look like the SR9. But no...they had to put all kinds of gnarly notches.

Personally...I'd love to see Glock make a .22 in the Glock 19 frame size. An exact replica of the 19 with proper .22 mags that work 100%. They would sell a train car load of them the first day.

As for that tactical lever gun, how much weed does a person have to consume to have thoughts like that? It's like a fatality car wreck. You know it is nasty but you just can't help but stare in disbelief.

i agree with you on Beretta looks but I love my Neos. I bought it for price over S&W and a couple other .22lr pistols. I love it for the way it shoots. My best 8 shot group ever with any handgun was with the Neos - about 1 1/2". I normally shoot my Ruger P345 and occasionally get a 2" group but the Neos is way less expensive for 100 rounds. My daughter in law shoots it over my son's Taurus 922 because she gets great groups with SA and hasn't master the DA on the Taurus. So sci-fi it looks but for $260 it's a fabulous shooter!

Yes, the Mossberg is an abomination, an abortion, a mockery and worse, they might actually show up at the range.

Agreed on the SR22. I don't hate the way it looks, but all the serrations are pretty ridiculous. On the back of the trigger? Really? Glocks to me are ugly to look at on a table but they look okay when actually shooting.

I actually think the 464 would look decent with a more traditional rifle stock and minus the rails and flash hider. An all black levergun with full length ammo tube might not look all that silly without all the other ridiculous crap on it.

Have you guys seen the savage 12ga with the chainsaw handle on it? That is just going above and beyond...

**** ... i´ll never be able to the pic of that lever out of my head.

Thx for that guys.

(AND ... yes, it does need an Acog.)

To me there is a difference between the plain jane "didn't bother with styling it just works" kind of blocky-ugly of the hi-point and to some degree the glock and the "I intentionally stuck a bunch of stupid *&^$%6 on it" ugly of the ruger 22 in the original post.

Personally I would take the Enfield or Webley over the ugly Mall Ninja pistols any day. Guess I must be an old codger. :)

Now I really think that the Enfield No 2 Mk 1** is ugly as home made sin, but I have two of the ugly little bugers.

And as you can see by the price tag, ugly guns can be picked up for a bargain.
