If you could only have three guns...

# 1 Marlin 336 C - 30/30 Rifle

# 2 Stevens - 12 Gauge DB Shotgun

# 3 Smith & Wesson Model 686- Plus

Own 2 of the guns already.
1. My Remington 870 12ga
2. My S&W 629-1 .44mag
3. Would be the AR15 in .300blk that I am currently building or a FAL in .308

If I had to settle for just three? :scrutiny:

  1. S&W 686, 4-inch, .357 Magnum
  2. Remington 870, with both slug and shot barrels.
  3. Colt IAR6940, 5.56mm, w/Trijicon ACOG

1. A good hunting rifle with scope...you choose. I like .300 win mag as the caliber.
2. A good shotgun. Remington model 870 pump is my preference.
3. A good revolver. i.e. S&W model 629 in .44 mag. or other in .357 mag.

1. Glock 23- Simple and reliable, conversion kits for multiple calibers (9mm, .357 sig and even .22 I think). Its a concealable, nice shooting pistol that's big enough to be useful in combat.

2. Remington 870 12ga with an extended tube as well as a slug barrel plus short and long shot barrels. Again simple, reliable, versatile. A 12 gauge slug will knock down nearly any big game animal, buckshot from a short barrel would be useful for defense and there are a variety of fowl that can be hunted with a long shot barrel and the right loads.

3. I'm undecided but would probably go with an AR15 with a spare upper in .22 for small game hunting and plinking. A good battle rifle seems useful, .223/5.56 is readily available and a quality AR-15 is a reliable firearm.

-Other choices for the third gun could include my 4 inch S&W 686 .357mag since it has a lot of sentimental value (it belonged to my grandfather) or possibly my Marlin 336 in .30-30. Realistically my 870 could take down any game animal I would use the .30-30 for but I really love that gun.

I liquidated a collection of six 80's 1911's, four kimbers, three air weights, two h&k's (p7,usp), two mini14's, one kel tec su16, & one remington700 for my grab&go trio. My general criteria were ability to carry reasomably well, reliability, utility, & parts availability. I came up with a stag ar15 w/aimpoint comp m4s, glock 23 with night sights, mossberg 500 in matte black with hogue over mould stocks & Mesa side saddle. There are other guns I like but with without spending a fortune, I think I've come up with a reasonably nice setup for my purposes.

This could be fun... I would like any of a lot of combinations:

PSL with a straitjacketed barrel, P-12 Para .45 cal., 12 ga. Mossberg 500 shorty;
HBAR Colt .223 w/8-32 Seals scope, Beretta 92FS, Winchester 1300 20 ga.;
Savage 110 .308, Ruger SR-9 (or 9C), Kel-Tec KSG 12 ga;
Steyer Scout in .308, Rock Island A2 hi-cap .45, Browning Citori 12ga;
Saiga 7.62x39, M&P Pro Series .40 cal, Browning A5 20 ga;
Remington 700 .308, Bulgarian Makarov, Ruger 10-22

I could go on all night, but those are a few "keeper" combinations...:uhoh:

A Ruger 10/22, an AR-15, and a 1911 (pick your brand) would take care of about 80 - 90 % of my day to day use. Now if I could add a Rem. 700 in .308 and a Rem. 870 in 12ga that would handle about 95% of my "needs". Thank God that, at least for now, we don't need to make that choice.

Remington 870 in 12 gauge... This would be my "1" gun, so of course it gets a spot in the top 3. Birdshot, buckshot, slugs, flares... incredibly valuable tool for any survival, hunting, defensive, and even plinking situation.

AK-47... Reliable, I'm familiar with the system, simple as can be, and a good punch for medium game, as well as common ammo to stock up with, and plink with.

Glock 21 and a .22LR kit... Good capacity, size, and weight. .45 is very common, and .22 is even more common, and can get any small game, as well as help preserve the .45, and give me practice at the range if my wallet is feeling a little too light.

I practically stick to the pistol, shotgun, assault rifle theme for my survival set:
1. Pistol: Glock 21 with night sights (CCW) reliable, durable
2. Shotgun: Mossberg 590A1 (Home defence) powerful, versatile
3. Assault rifle: AK47 (long range) cheap ammo, easy to maintain

pistol: 1911
shotgun: benalli m4
rifle: mosin nagant. why? when you ding up your 308 mine wont even notice

out of my safe, easy

Sig P220ST - 45ACP

AR-15 16" with open sights. 5.56

Win model 97 - holding 7 rounds

With the 3 you could protect and hunt... enought said

An HK Mk 23
A Browning A-5
A very reliable AR 15

I'd much rather go with ultra reliable than super accurate.

1) Glock 19
2) Stevens 315 SxS 12 gauge (30" barrels. full/full, #4 is killer)
3) Only hard choice - my Winchester 94 in .30-30 or my VZ-24 based 7x57 carbine? I could use either to hunt with or use for SD with till the end of time.

I think all of my three would be a combination of hunting, combat/defense, and fun.

AR-10 (really any quality battle rifle in .308)
686 (again, any quality 4" .357 magnum) can be concealed if needed, good for a trail gun, outstanding house gun in my opinion.
Remington 870

My first three weapons were actually a Colt AR-15, Taurus PT-99, and a Mossberg 590. My aim at the time was the combat/defense role and not hunting.

After 7 months of reading this thread I think I am still back to my same preferances of:

Remington 870P 12GA
Remington 700P w/ Leupold Mark IV 6x20 FFP
Sig P229 in .40

Gets me, long, short, and everywhere in between...

Not to sound ignorant, but is this for survival or combat?

Survival
1. Savage 22/410
2. Remington 700 270
3. Colt anaconda

Combat
1 mossberg 590a1
2 AR10
3 GLOCK 21

I'll keep it simple and open-ended, because most modern-day firearms (1898 through today) are adequate for just about any purpose.

1) a bolt-action, centerfire rifle, with both iron sights and a scope...

2) a pump-action shotgun, with smooth bore...

3) a handgun 9mm or larger.

The above listed three would be sufficient for hunting or home defense.

Hmm....if I'm gone from civilization and its time to survive:
R-870 12 ga with both slug and shot bbls(multi chokes too)
Winchester 70 SS in either 30-06 or 300WM
S&W model 617 in .22lr

If I'm running and gunning?
FAL have a bush model with 18" bbl and drum rear sight
chopped and channeled 12 ga Remington model 11 with sights and extended mag
Colt Combat Commander in .45 matte finished.
