I bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 .45 basic G.I. so far I've fired a box of Winchester 230 gr FMJ and a box of federal 230 gr FMJ,(50 round boxes). At 30 feet the gun shoots 3 to 4 inches to the left.Should I wait until I've broken it in(500 rounds) or try some other ammo, before trying to do something with the sights?..Thanks..

shoot some more.. AND have someone else try it. in case you are pulling it left in anticipation. If I've not shot my 45 in awhile, I want to compensate.

You need to test the pistol off a rest. You can't tell anything by just shooting without a rest; it could be you jerking the trigger, it could be that the sights are off. It is typical of less-than-ideal trigger control for a right-handed shooter to put their shots left of POA.

How does it group?

Yes, I would wait to adjust the sights until the pistol was sufficiently broken in. A friend bought a RIA Tactical and it did the same thing, POI was a little off POA when new. After 500 rounds, it is shooting POA at 7-10-15 yards, often single hole shot group sub 1" off hand.

To be honest, it is now shooting tighter double-taps than my railed Sig 1911 bought at the same time.

I have plans to purchase one in the near future.

Thanks for all of the advice.I'll put 400 more rounds out of it and see how it shoots.I'll get someone else to try and see where they hit also...the groups I got were about 3 to 4 inch groups...Anyone recommend one certain ammo better than any other?

Stan Chen ASYM Precision. Any of those loads are top notch and should get the best accuracy of any factory ammo out of your gun. I'd try the Practical Match, I use that in bullseye competition. Its expensive, but try a box or two; it has great accuracy.

And please, try shooting the gun off a rest. It doesn't need to be a ransom rest, even just some sandbags stacked up will help you see the true accuracy of the gun.

I have the same 45 as you. Mine shoots right on at 3 yards, low and to the left at 8 yards reguardless from a rest or off hand. The pattern is very tight at both distances. I put about 200 rounds through it:what: so far.

Yeah, mine came to me with factory 3.8 lb. trigger, not bad for a cheap gun! It's made every bit as good as some US made guns that cost 40% more, IMHO.

There are a few good reasons why some of those US made guns cost 40%+ more.

I say keep shooting- Don't do anything to the pistol that can't be undone later. There may only be a small burr somewhere throwing you off, it may wear down on its own or it may need a little polish later on. RI triggers can be pretty stiff, especially at first. The sear/hammer connection needs a little time to find home. Also, the suggestion to use a rest was very wise.

I'm kind of new to shooting, but my RIA 1911 has been a pleasure to shoot. I have shot about a 1000 rounds though it. The only issue I have had was when I loaded TulAmmo, which seemed to cause a lot of feed issues. Recently the magazine release has started sticking, but I don't think that is a manufacturing issue. Any info on the mag issue would be appreciated, I know that you should never lubricate this area.

Where are you placing your finger on the trigger? Try moving it so the trigger is pulled more by the crease of the first joint, rather than the tip. Verify any such issues before going to the sight adjustment. And just because your grouping (the size of the shot cluster) is OK doesn't mean you aren't doing the same thing wrong every time.

If it turns out the sights really need adjusting, you do this by moving the rear sight in the direction you want your bullets to go. It will take a hammer, a NON-MARRING punch and a PADDED JAW vise.

Got one and they are super shooters, my son can clear off 2 racks (10 metal plates) fairly easy. Accurate once you can learn to use the small sights. I mean small...Mil Spec I guess.
