Richmond Rifle range report

So Ive convinced myself that I haven idea what I'm doing. Here's what happened. Took the rifle to the range after work (with my new 1860 revolver)with some 777, .57 round balls, and cotton patches of undetermined thickness. First problem - this gun didn't like to fire. I usually had to take off the nipple and put powder down the hole to get it to fire. Next issue: a lubed patched ball seemed awfully hard to ram down the barrel compared to my boys .50. I eventually had to cut the patches and stretch them a bit to work. 3rd issue: this thing has a trigger pull of a about 20lbs or so. Which contributed to my final issue which is a 6" group at 25 yds.

So I proceeded to work on the trigger pull using a method on the NSSA site and then broke the sear spring : (

Otherwise I still love this gun!

Since you had to remove the nipple and pour some powder in...suggests some kind of blockage. Maybe you should remove the nipple, and use a pipe cleaner and clean out the passage.
I normally fire off a cap- first into the air, then a second cap pointed at a stalk of grass , before loading my Enfield musket. If you see the grass move when you fire, you know the powder channel is free from obstructions.

What brand Richmond rifle do you have? I have an Armi Sports CS Richmond, and have been shooting her for about two years. I had some issues with ignition, tried 2f 777, 2f and 3f goex, popped caps etc... I had to take out the cleaning screw and run a pipe cleaner through every 2 to 3 shots. Eventually I opened up the flash hole ever so slightly (like an additional .001th). Now several hundred rounds later never a FTF. Mine will hold 2.5 inch groups at 100 yards, benched. I have shot her out to 250 yards on steel and she shoots pretty well. The NSSA trigger job also works well. Took mine from around 12- 13lbs down to about 9lbs. Recently, I switched lube to lithium White grease and my trigger dropped down to a smooth 6lb trigger. Enjoy your rifle.

I have a James River Armory version with the Hoyt barrel.

Did you open up the hole on the nipple or in the barrel?

In the barrel. This however is not a recomended fix. I may have just got lucky. I would assume with a Hoyt barrel the flash hole may not be you issue. From what I have read you should never open up the hole in your nipple, it can lead to hammer reset and some other issues. Before I tried anything else I would get a new nipple. Try the Spitfire nipples. They run arounf $5 and could work out to be a cheap fix. FYI I tend to shoot mostly 777 and have not had any further issues with ignition. The reson I mention this- many will tell you 777 is hard to ignite. I have not found this to be true. It may not be as consistant as BP (some say it is sensitive to your loading pressure) but shoots well in my rifle, dosn't smell and is easy to clean up.
