Okay hoping for some great responses and help.
Just acquired a taurus pt 940. The gun is nice,
great shape, fun to shoot.

Now I know it is a slimmed down version of the
pt92/ pt100 series which is the taurus made
beretta 92/96since they bought the patent to it
all those years ago if I remember right? It's
supposed to be 20% lighter and smaller I believe
was the advertised intent?

Now here is my dilemma it is a rarer 9 round single stack
magazine model (magazine looks like a 1911 magazine in shape and size.)
Not the newer 10 round double stack magazine that looks like a pt92
magazine. Had to hunt and search for the 1 magazine
I now have for it. Taurus customer service says
they never made it in single stack even after I sent
them the magazine package number and pics of said
gun with magazine pictured together with the
magwell opening.

Any info on why they changed? Or just any info at all
would be appreciated.

Also any links with wood grips for sale or any
accessories for it. Especially mags.

Taurus never made a single stack .40 caliber gun.

The 940 magazine holds only 10 rounds and is a double stack. It is probable for two possibilities.
1.) The magazine spring is very strong, and a goodly possibility, is that only 9 cartridges can be loaded into that particular magazine.

Fully loading the magazine with a mag loading tool such as a Uplula, or other magazine loader model, leaving the magazine sit for a few days or for a couple of weeks would take care of not being able to get the 10th round in.

2.) Somehow you got a hold of a 9x19 magazine for PT908 which is single stack pistol.

Now keep in mind this gun was made in 1995.
It is a 9 shot single stack 40 cal, I will post pics today.
And the mag is not a 9 mil mag since it was new in the
package labeled for a 940 40 cal 9 rounds.
And I've talked to several magazine suppliers that know
Of this model taurus but could give no info beyond
What I already had.

So contrary to the replies taurus did indeed make a 940 in single
Stack 40 cal. Just it was done back in the 90s.
Pics to follow.

Hope to see the pics. I'm curious now. :)

940s were first produced in 1997.
You might have a version that was sold initailly over in Brazil, but not here.

Well I just took the pics and am just sending them to my email now, when I was on the phone with taurus customer service the first time and gave the serial # they said oh it looks like you have a taurus pt940 made in 1995, so thats where the 95 date came from, and as for any other possibilities unless I have a mismarked gun its a 940 due to the clearly marked pt940 on the slide.

Here are all the markings:
Left side of slide has Taurus INT.MFG.INC Miami, FL With the Taurus Brazil Bullhead stamp.
Right Side of slide has Forjas Taurus S.a. made in brazil PT 940 cal 40 s&w.
No rightside frame marking.
Leftside frame marking is the serial number.
Only magazine markings are CAL..40 s&w made in brazil.
Brand new in the pack old stock magazine, package is all clearly taurus marked, actual label and model number for magazine are:
model 5-94001, magazine, mag bl 940 9-rd, and the serial number is to faded to read the numbers.

Pic 1 is of the gun, mag, and magazine packaging.
pic 2 is a closeup of the mag packaging.
pic 3 is to show the mag markings noted above.
pic 4 is to show it is a singlestack magazine.

So it is what it is, that's all the info I have.
It is a 40 cal pt940 fired and tested and cleaned.
It is a 9+1 when loaded and chambered.
It is Identical to the pt100 and pt92 in design for takedown and assembly,
as I have hadmy fair share as well as the beretta variants.

So now can anyone offer any more info since we have established all that.

Thanks J.

I wonder if somehow you got a prototype or something that was supposed to be like the 908. You got a puzzler there.

The pics are a bit blurry so can't see anything in detail. Looks like you've got a piece of history very few or on one knows about.

Well darn weregunner, as much as I like pieces of history and collectibles I was gonna use it for edc and a nightstand gun as I like my berettas and taurus 92/96/100/101/etc series since having them in and out of the military, but if I can't get mags and such it doesn't seem to be a viable option. Well guess I will put it up on here see if anyone wants to trade one of the above mentioned models for it. Thanks for all the help.

As for the pics thank my old blackberry cell phone. It refuses to die while all my digital cameras have bit the dust. That phone is possessed I say its evil and refuses to die. Anyways thanks again.

As for it being a mystery it's fine I've posted it up in the classified section. Gotta have more than 1 mag available.

Have you considered trying a .40 cal 1911 mag?

The only steel framed semiautos I'm aware of Taurus ever making is the PT1911.
The 92/99/908/940/945 were all aluminum framed.

IIRC, the slide/barrel design of the 908/940/945 were copied from the Sig pistols, not Beretta (like the PT92).

The 1911 40 cal mag wont fit, already thought that myself.
Just gonna try to trade for something else I want.

Bump and info, for anyone else that may ever run across one like it.

I actually spoke to a president of the taurus usa line, and he explained that from 2000 on most of his employees don't have any real access or knowledge of the older discontinued models, but the info he had on hand verified they had been making the pt940 in a singlstack to give it a slimmer profile, but do to low sales they discontinued the line and went doublestack like the pt92/pt100 to give a few more rounds and to cover a wider market. He also checked and said good luck finding mags for the pt940 singlestack as they were fetching a premium back in the early 2000 era and they hadnt had any in stock since 1999 I believe?
Anyways info for the masses.

The 9 round version did exist but was a seriously oddball model. If you'll notice, it isn't even built on the 940 frame, it's actually the 945. The double stack version is lighter and only insignificantly wider so there really wasn't a point to having this model.

PT-909 grips would probably fit it but I don't know for sure either way. As for magazines, this guy claims to have them:

http://www.jocoemprise.com/pistols/taurus/taurus40magazine.html

I have no affiliation with that web store so please don't blame me if you get taken by them. But you might want to contact them before giving up on the pistol and selling it.

Nice info maximum.

I can see why a single stack version would be made. Same as for the PT908.

If you want a gun to be easy to hide for CCW carry, military carry, or for LEOs, off suty or on duty a single stack makes sense for most of them.

Kind of like the SIG 225 and the S&W 3913. No one gun size fits all needs. :)

I apologize for the earlier claim about the 940 only made in double stack.
