Buggin' Out Rimfire Match:

Ok, just to be sure I've got this right:
The Black and White target are for IRONS at 25 yards and the Color target is for OPTICS at 50 yards?

Also I'll be shooting in the "Sporting" class not the Target, am I to understand correctly that if shooting from a sitting position there can be no form of support (aside from my own hands/arms)? I do not have a true bi-pod but sometimes use a box or home made set of short shooting sticks to act as a bi-pod when trying for best accuracy? I just want to make sure I understand the rules properly for a fair comparison. Don't want to 'cheat' due to lack of knowledge or understanding lol.

Thanks for the info, and for running these matches, excited to be entering my first.

RBH44, not a bad idea on mailing targets, if anyone else end up needing any let me know and I'll drop 'em off.

:)

I found an absolutely great pack of targets at Walmart last night! It's made by Champion Targets and it's called Bug Slug, it's 11" wide by 17" long and a pack of 25 costs $5.97 at my local Walmart - yours might be different -

It's too big for my scanner, so the best way to see what it looks like is hit their website where they have several insect targets.

http://www.championtarget.com/targets/paper/animal/insect.aspx

Ya wanna practice for Maverick's tortuous Buggin' out bugs, try this one or the "Fly Paper" target on the same page.

50 points for the mosquito (heck I can hardly see it holding a target in my hand, let alone 50 yards!)

You got on the targets. And looks like you good on the cross sticks.

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both divisions (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

No prob. I also forgot I dug out some of by 17gr bullets out of a pine tree that was about 6 feet or so behind my target stand. This is after going through 3/4" plywood.

Thanks Texas, I tried my luck at the range on sat but it was windy and swirling from every which way. I'm hoping to get back out with a little less wind and give it another shot. Was also going to shoot in the centerfire with my .308, but with money being tight couldn't justify the $10 - $20 in ammo just to put a picture up. Maybe another month when things are better (or when I find some inexpensive but still accurate target ammo).

Hey this looks fun! Is there a rim fire match every month?

Hope so, I just ordered a Marlin XT-22 (mag fed wood stock version) today and cant wait to try it out. :) This kind of thing looks perfect for what was in my mind when I decided to buy a .22. ( That and I'm kinda sick of blowing 50+ bucks in ammo for a 30 min range session)

I won't be able to pick it up for 10 days, so April is out. But I'll be good for May!

From what I read I guess that the XT-22 would be in the sporting class....?

Yes sir, occasionally we'll extend a match (typically in winter) to promote a bit more participation, but generally there is one every month.

You got it. The only additional requirements for fullfilling the sporting requirement is not using a rest (shooting sticks and slings are fine).

:)

Centurian22,
I received the targets yesterday. Thank you sir!! These look like they will be a challenge. Just what I like! Hoping to get out and give it a go on Sat.

Not a problem gentlemen! Glad I could help and contribute. I just scored my two targets (from a very windy range day). I'll try to get the pictures posted tomorrow. Might get out for one more try but it's doubtful. Supposed to rain on Saturday. Look forward to future Rimfire matches. Was going to participate in the centerfire but couldn't afford / justify the over $1 per round cost of my .308. Found some cheaper ammo today, just gotta get used to it.

Trying my first image post from the iPhone. We'll see if it works. In case it does, rifle is an old .22lr sears single shot bolt action with iron sights left to me by my late grandfather, shot at the Orrington Rod and Gun Club range in Maine, on a very windy day (10-15mpg gusts to 20 from all directions), shot at 25 yards from sitting using home made cross sticks on a bench. I believe I have scored correctly at 6 points, please correct me if I am wrong or have violated any guidelines. Again hope the picture works, if not I'll use my desktop later and try again.

Now that I think I've got this picture thing figured out from my NOT-so 'smartphone', thanks to photobucket; here is a better picture of the target above:

And here is my 50yrd, sporting w/optics target:

093848a5.jpg

As written I count 6points if only full body counts, and 23points if leg hits are scored at full value.*

Shot the same windy day same location, with an old Marlin 989 .22lr semi auto, 7shot mag, with a Weaver 3-6X20 scope on weaver rings, this was left to my by my other late grandfather. I never looked at and realized the scope and rings on this rifle were weaver till I looked for this post. Both targets were shot with Winchester 36gr plated HP 1280fps.*

Sorry about the multiple posts but now that I've figured it all out I'll be better I promise lol.*

Please let me know if I've made any mistakes in scoring or in procedure.

Happy shooting everyone.

You sure did!...and you aught to be ashamed. :p I think you shortchanged yourself by a point on the irons target. Looks, to me, like you nicked the body on the fly.

Any hit is a good one (for the full-color optics target)...so 23 it is.

:)

Thanks Maverick! I suppose I can be happy with these results for my first competition of any sort with guns I've hardly fired in conditions I wouldn't call favorable or 'Rimfire friendly'. Look forward to May or June's next. Might miss May being away at work. Again thanks for hosting the awesome challenges.

Yesterday was a total wash. Wind and heavy rain all day and still going on today. Hopefully it will let up before sunset. If not,I'll have to try and get out one day this week after work.

Hey, that's some pretty good shooting. Haven't been able to get rifles to the range this month as my friends range is still occupied by his wife's horses and the indoor range is getting ready to do a real super $200K remodel. They say they are going to stay open, so may be able anyway.

Just took on a real neat project gun. I have this thing for rescuing old .22's and I found one with a busted stock. It's an early Savage model 24, .22LR over 3" .410 bore shotgun, break barrel single shot. This is one of the real early ones as it doesn't even have a serial number. Don't remember exactly when serial numbers became mandatory on long guns but I believe it was somewhere in the mid 60's.

I'll post some pix after the epoxy dries on the stock repair. I could buy new wood for it from Numrich for about $120 plus shipping, but it's more fun to see if I can fix it myself.

Edit: Used my dremel with a narrow saw blade, cut slots in the stock and broken piece used a homemade carpenters "biscuit" and glued it back. There is still a visible line but the piece is back in place and solid now. The line doesn't show very well in the picture but the arrow points to the place where it was broken out.

Took it to the range this morning - indoor rifle range was being worked on so didn't even try to shoot the bugs but I did sort of zero it. Can't put optics on this thing so I used the center out of a B27 pistol target at 25 yards. With my eyes, I still managed a couple of fairly decent groups and they were fired standing, offhand, no rest. The first target is the initial one and the last one is after I ran a few through it while drifting the rear sight to the right. Wound up moving it about 1/16" to the right and one notch up on the elevation ladder to get that final group at 25. It's a keeper for the SHTF "Bug Out" chest for sure.

Jim

Just got the details on my favorite indoor range's upcoming $200K expansion. Looks like for a while after they finish the first part of the expansion, the 100 yard indoor rifle range will be shut down for some much needed renovation as well. Looking forward to that. They are going to state of the art tracks & carriers that the idiots won't be able to shoot up!

From the local forum:
April 30th, 2012 Bullseye will be undergoing an expansion. We are adding 1,300 square feet to the west side of the building. Thanks to all of our customers and the gun market, this is a much needed addition!

We are adding an office, classroom, and larger foyer. In June, once the building expansion is complete, we are gutting the rifle range tunnel to make room for all new tracks and carrier systems. Going to be a lot of changes going on over the next few months.

Went to the range this morning to help a friend zero his brand new CZ-452 American after we put a BSA Tactical 6-24 X 44 scope on it. I didn't know why he thinks he needs that much scope on a rimfire rifle until I found out that this thing comes with interchangeable barrels in .22LR and .17HMR! It came with the .22 barrel installed so that's the one we zeroed it with.

I took along some of the colored bug targets just to see how it would do. I was also using the STRELOK ballistic app for my hacked e-reader that thinks it's now an Android phone (less the phone part). We zeroed the scope at 25 yards initially and STRELOK calculated the # of clicks to set the scope at for 50 yards.

I put up a bug target at 50 yards and shot at it with the scope set to 24 power and focused at 50 with the side focus knob. Set the elevation turret to what STRELOK said and rested the rifle on a big heavy foam block front rest and just my fist for the rear rest. The results were extremely impressive and I can't wait for him to swap to the .17HMR barrel and see what it will do there.

May not get back with my own gun this month, so here's my entry shot with a borrowed .22LR

Unlimited/Target class - 50 yards not sure how the scoring goes. Some solid body hits and some appendage hits. Thought I had one clean miss, but turns out I actually nicked a leg - scared the crap outta the bug anyway :neener: After I posted this, I read post#1 and see I should have shot the BW target. That would have been too easy with this rifle as with that 24 power scope, all of the colored bugs were plenty visible and the rifle was really up to the task. Wish I could afford one of those CZ's.

Ammo was Federal 40 grain match solids (bulk pack from Walmart).

KSCCHTrainer: if you read the thread all the way through, you shot correctly. The initial post was a typo, as confirmed by Maverick. Scoring on the colored bug target is 'anything goes'. If it hit any part of the bug (even a leg) it counts and is given the corresponding score from the margin of that row. If I see and read correctly that you had no misses I believe that is a perfect score of 75! Great shooting!

Excellent shooting, KS! I may get to shoot this in the morning ... will have to wait and see, as I have a busy day planned. If not, it's been fun watching to see who pulls something good out of it.

I'm thinking that I might want more magnification on my Savage than my 3-9x40. That BSA just made the contenders list. :D

That scope wasn't even on my rifle, though I do have an identical one on my .223 Savage. Gotta try the colored bugs at 100 yards with it next range trip but the centerfire match uses a different bug target. Since the 30th is on Monday, I may be able to get back with the .223 and the .17HMR in which case I'll shoot this one again with my own rifle.

Not usually having much money to spend on accessories, I've been somewhat partial to BSA scopes lately. They seem to be good value for the money. This one has really bright optics and the 6-24 zoom matches the capabilities of the Savage model 10 Tactical .223 with the match load I've worked up for it very well. My Savage 93R17 in .17HMR has a 6-18 side focus BSA "Sweet-17" scope on it and will literally punch the eye out of a fly at 100 yards.

When I bought the 93R17, It was a toss-up between the .17HMR and .22WMR. Glad I went with the .17 for accuracy.

Yep, that. Excellent marksmanship, KSCCHTrainer!

BTW, I believe that is a new CZ-455, as the 452 doesn't allow for interchangeable barrels/chamberings to the best of my knowledge.

Re: BSA Optics; I typically avoid them like the plague due to repeatability and construction concerns, however the "Sweet" series have actually proven themselves to be decent optics for the money in my experience (though I should note that I don't own one at the present time). If budget is a concern (when is it not?), I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Sweet 22/17 for such a rifle. The Centerpoint 4-16x40mmAO is another reasonably priced option that can be picked up reasonably inexpensively. Mueller is very popular for high-mag. optics on rimfires for good reason, but the cost is a bit greater as well.
