Picked up a box of Federal Target at Walmart, first I've seen this stuff. It's cheap enough if indeed "target" ammo, at 16 bucks for 350. You don't even wanna know what RWS Target or Eley Match costs.

Now, I wasn't expecting it'd be RWS or Eley an I was right. It seems to be gun specific like any other .22 ammo, may work or may not in the gun. You just have to try it and see. I have seen an improvement in every firearm I've ever tried RWS or Eley in, whether big improvement or small. But, the Federal Walmart "bulk pack" target ammo (an oxymoron?) was WORSE in my new SR22 and my Mk2. My Mk2 shoots 1/2" at 25 yards benched with standard Federal lightening 550 round bulk pack. It shot 1" at 25 with the "target" ammo. My SR22 shoots 2" at 25 with standard bulk Federal and 2.5" with "target". BUT, I did shrink the 2" groups my Rossi 511 revolver normally gets with the bulk pack stuff down to a hair over an inch with this "target" stuff. THAT gives me a reason to buy the stuff and keep it on hand. I shoot that revolver a bit better than I do my new SR22, anyway, and this gives it some extra accuracy. That gun shot 1" at 25 with RWS Target, but a little low. The Federal Target shoots to same POA as Lightening which it did NOT in the two Rugers, shot left and a bit high. But, the Rossi LOVES the stuff. Now, bare in mind, I have a scope on my Mk2. I can't shoot any better than 1" at 25 off the bench with ANY standard sized handgun using iron sights, not the gun's fault, just can't shoot 'em any better than that. So, if the gun will shoot 1" with iron sights for me, there is no need to seek any MORE accuracy as I can't use it. Such is not the case with a scoped handgun, however.

But, if you see this stuff at walmart for the first time, just be aware it really isn't very special, but it does give you another option to try in you .22. Heck, the stuff is cheaper than CCI. I've yet to see what it'll do in my rifles, but I will test 'em with it. I'm hoping it helps my 10/22 a bit, but I don't know, Rugers don't seem to like it. :scrutiny:

Don't even think about buying serious match ammo at Wal-Mart. Or the LGS. Try one of the specialty dealers like Champion's Choice, you'll cut the price in half.

I am wondering if you are referring to the auto-match? IIRC it was designed for reliable feeding in auto loaders as well as accuracy, one of those compromise situations. I have not put any on paper with a handgun, but it drops my 10/22 groups from 1.5"@100(with standard fed bulk) to about .8"@100.

Yes to be fair mine is custom through and through. I will have to put some handguns on paper to see if it brings my groups down.

I've been shooting the AM22 Federal for about a year now and my 10/22's love it.

I copied dimes on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper for a benchrest target and yesterday I put 12, 5 shot groups in a dime target at 50 yards. It was a perfect day, no wind and 68 degrees - a perfect day all around.

Well, if my 10/22 will shoot, say, 1" at 50 for me, that will be a MAJOR improvement off 1.5" it normally shoots with the Lightening, not that I really care in a plinker, but it would be better hunting accuracy. I'll get around to that and maybe my old Remmy 512 which is a 1.5" at 100 yards shooter bone stock and 50 years old. That gun was my 9th birthday present and it's killed a truck load of squirrel over the years. RWS REALLY shoots lights out in that gun, sub MOA on a windless day.

For the price it's hard to beat. The Auto Match bulk box is accurate for me in revolvers, self loading pistols and most of my rifles. I don't own any " target guns " per se nor do I compete in any formally scored matches.

Having said that doesn't mean I dislike shooting small groups :) However diminishing returns is a cruel mistress and she has taught me well LOL. Spending wisely and shooting more = FUN! I try to not take myself too seriously as I grow older and wiser? As a result living has become mucho more funno.

Of course as always ( Your Mileage May Vary.)
