4. 5.45x45 (.223) out of AUG
5. 7x57 Mauser out of Zastava
6. 404 Jeffery out of double rifle
7. 12.7 Russian out of DshK

11 and 12 would be 22-250 and 223

Ten rifle rounds?

Hmm.

1. 5.56mm (what I'm shooting the most of, Colt 6920)
2. 22LR (Marlins, CMMG) Rimfires have the most bang for the buck in grin factor.
3. 44 magnum (1894 Marlin)
4. .30-06 (Savage 116, 1903a3)
5. 8mm Mauser (Kar98k)
6. .45/70 (Marlin)
7. .22 Magnum (Marlin) I shoot this a lot with my nephew it's 'his' favorite rifle and caliber.
8. .25-06 (Ruger M77V)
9. .30-30 (Marlin 336T)
10. .375 H&H (Savage 116 Safari)

Trying to keep this list to calibers I actually have access to on a regular basis.

7.62x51
7.62x54r
.50BMG
.22LR

Shotgun:
12ga

Sorry - I know it's 11, but it is what it is :)

Is this just rifle, or can we include pistol/shotgun as well? I'm going to go with all 3 since I don't think I could come up with 10 if I limit myself to just rifles...

Rifle:

1 .22LR
2 .22WMR
3 .280 Remington
4 .30 Carbine
5 .30-30 Winchester
6 .30-40 Krag (my current favorite)

Shotgun:

7 20ga (favorite shotgun)

Pistol:

8 .25ACP (go ahead and laugh)
9 9mm Makarov (aka 9X18)
10 .38 Special

Honorable Mentions:

9mm Largo

.257 Roberts (never shot one before but it just seems like a cool cartrige)

.22lr
.223 Rem. (5.56X45mm NATO)
.30-30 Win.
7.62X39mm Soviet
.270 Win.
.308 Win. (7.62X51mm NATO)
.300 Win. Mag.
7.62X54Rmm Russian
.375 H&H Mag.
.45-70 Gov't.

Mmmm, I reloaded a 20 round box of 30-06 in 2006 with which I took three deer...I suppose my "best ten cartridges" would be the first ten out of that box

22lr
257 Roberts
30-30
7.62x51
9X19
38 Special
357 Magnum
45 ACP
12ga

I really don't need any more as those cover everything I'd need them for. The 30-30 is an overlap but it's s dedicated lever cartridge. With a Savage 99 I could shoot the 308 out of a lever gun. I guess for really large game I'd add the 375 H&H Magnum.

I probably haven´t shot enough different rifles to make a list of 10.

.223 remintgon
.308 winchester
.338 Lapua
5.45x39mm
.22lr
12 gauge

I´m not a collector, so I think I could happily live with these six cartridges only. Add 9mm and .357 mag. for handguns and I´m set.

I think some of the following are some of the most historically significant rifle cartridges and/or hunting cartridges for most hunters. Obviously, I omitted 5.56 NATO/ .223, 7.62 x 39, 7.62 x 54R, .303 and elephant, Cape Buffalo, and Rhino cartridges. I've never owned or fired numbers 4, 6, 8 and 10, but I've read enough to learn of their merits.

1. .22LR
2. .30-06
3. .308
4. .45-70
5. .30-30
6. .50 BMG
7. 7mm Rem. Mag.
8. 7 mm Mauser
9. 8 mm Mauser
10. 6.5 x 55 Swede

1.17HMR
2.22LR
3.6x45
4.243 Win.
5.6.5 Swede
6.44 Magnum
7.300 Whisper/Blackout
8.308 Win.
9.300 Win. Mag.
10.45 ACP

1. 30-06
2. .223/5.56
3. .243 win
4. .22long rifle
5. 7.62x54r
6. 30 carbine
7. 30 u.s. army/30-40 krag
8. 300 blackout
9. 6.5x284 norma
10. 30mm gau-8/a depleted uranium
Looks, I'm familiar with only about 2/3 of these, but definitely double points for depleted uranium.

  1. 240 Weatherby Mag
  2. 250 Savage
  3. 25-06 Remington
  4. 257 Weatherby Mag
  5. 6.5x55 Swedish
  6. 7x57 Mauser
  7. 7mm Remington Mag
  8. 30-06 Springfield
  9. 300 Weatherby Mag
  10. 8mm Remington Mag

45-70 is far and away #1 for me.
2) 6.8 SPC
3) 22lr
4) 30-30
5) 25-06
6) 30-06

Um - In 30 years of hunting I haven't moved beyond these other than to help my wife sight in her 7mm-08. Should be trying out an AR with some .223 soon.
