Remington 700 caliber ideas? :)

6.5-06, and any AI chambering would be a great idea and you would definitely have something new and different. But, if you're not reloading now or plan on reloading then you'll have a very hard time getting ammo. Out of all the cartridges you listed I would go with the 25-06, very under-rated deer slayer. Just make sure you put at least a 24in bbl on it to get optimal velocity.

If I was to re-barrel a long action my two choices would be either the 6.5-06 or the .338-06.

The .338-06 is just like it sounds, a 30-06 that's necked up to a .338 caliber bullet. It's just got a little more kick than a 30-06 but packs the punch of .338 Win Mag. It's got a great barrel life and the .338 caliber has a wide array of bullet choices.

I am really leaning towards an -06 catridge of some sort. I like the 25-06 because it shoots wicked flat, but the 30-06 is cheap to shoot. The 6.5, like you said, would be something pretty different. I actually had a rebarreled 1917 Enfield in .338-06. That thing was SOOO fun to shoot. But since I did not reload, it was expensive as hell so it just collected dust. Very cool caliber though.

Get the bolt and go with the .270. If your short on money that's a no brainer. If you think you might want to reload have the chamber cut to an Ackley Improved.
What he said. I don't like .270s but the $$ question makes it a no-brainer.
Why use a long action for .308 or 7-08 if it's going to be a hunting rifle? If you probably won't be loading long bullets, there's not much of a reason to use a long action for short-action shells.

time

If your time has no value then do as other have suggested and spend that time researching, looking, sending money out waiting for the mail etc....you're looking at a week, week's, month or month's or longer..

or just sell what you have then get a complete rifle...you're looking at a day, day's or a couple of weeks

SniperHide offers lots of buyers looking for rem parts, prolly more so than most other Site's. Those guys are always building a better mouse trap....:what:

And frankly I can't perceive of having anything but a 308...with A DEEP RICH FROSTING of STAINLESS.....

in regards to working on projects for myself, no, my time has no value. This is what I do to keep sanity. I have other rifles that fill my need, but I want another... haha. I spend a lot of time on snipershide (unfortunatly) but it is all in good fun.

Im with you... I LOVE stainless.

I going for this look again for this build:

Very nice looking rig there Kyle. Love the thumb-hole stock and fluted SS barrel. I'm not usually a fan of stainless or haven't been so far in my rifles due to the practical need for no shininess for hunting. But that is one good looking rifle.

Thank you Sir! The stainless seems to attract the deer in my area.. haha. I miss hunting where you have to be quiet, hidden and generally sneeky... We drive around in a truck 'till we find a good vantage, hop out, pull out our lawn chairs and listen to music while we wait for one to pop its head out... Deer around here have taken the roll of rats. I live in the city and I woke up with 14 deer in my yard. I could hand feed them and smack them on the head with a hammer... I could save myself a bullet that way!

Wow, I just got into hunting whitetail last year and have yet to harvest one. Keeping my fingers crossed for this fall. I could see how your situation would take all the fun out of it though. If you're ever in need of getting rid of a rig like that for dirt cheap don't hesitate to let me know! Lol

Rebarreling will just about double the cost of your rifle. I'd leave it in .270 and shop around for a bolt, bottom metal and stock -- Boyds are good and fairly priced in my experience.

Even if I find a bolt, will I not effectivly have to remove and replace the barrel in order to headspace the new bolt? That is, if the new bolt is not spaced already.

I actually have a couple of 700 barrels laying around in very nice shape. The sale from what I have laying around should almost buy me a new barrel. For sure another factory heavy barrel take-off provided I can find one.

Yes, you'll have to have the new bolt headspaced to the barrel -- but that will be considerably less than buying a new barrel and having it installed.

You might get enough from them to pay for a nice chunk of the project.

Ill be rebarreling and headspacing it myself. It is a pretty straight forward job and one of my good friends is does custom rifles for people on the side so he will be helpful in the case that I need assistance. My only cost will be for parts.

Hopefully you can peg one this year. You are correct. It has become very boring... no challenge at all. But! They still need to be culled. :)

If I ever decide to sell that rifle, punch me in the face. Please.

:what::what::what: I just sold a bunch of stuff and got the above; it's still unfired outside the factory test firing; hated the one-piece base, change it to different loopy's...now I help with my grandkids on daily basis .... time is one thing I don't have enuff of right now.

Picked up a lightly used bolt from eBay (of all places) for 70 bucks. Found nice bottom metal for a detachable mag for 50. Decided, thanks to ya'lls suggestions, that I will just shoot the 270 until I get a wild hair to mess with the barrel.

Believe it of not, after the tape test, the bolt appears headspaced! There is even tension when closing the bolt on the case without any tape. That is a relief. The rest of the parts and the go/nogo guages should be here this week. If all goes well like I think it will...This weekend I will test fire, then I will refinish it!

With the luck I have had from Remington the caliber does not matter, that would just be the engraving on my next boat paddle. I saw BDLs on sale for $418 the other day, I never stopped to take a second look, kept on walking all that is for me is another headache just like my last three. In a recent multi rifle accuracy comparison Remington ranked dead last of all major brands, oh how the mighty have fallen :(

what kind of issues other than maybe accuracy have you had?

One sweet rifle in the works.

Ron

Thank you Sir. I hope it shoots well.

^ Nasty rusting issues, a rifle that simply would not chamber a round and feeding issues none of which the factory would fix, I am DONE wasting money on their rifles especially when there are several really well made rifles on the market for less money and they have given me zero issues.
