What .38 models does smith make in a blackened finish besides the 442? The 342 is no longer on the site(discontinued?).

The 37.

They also make the 36LS with a nice, honest, traditional blued finish. Makes me glad I could tote a gun that said "LadySmith" on it. :)

From what I can tell smith only offers the blackened finish on the titanium/scandium guns and they are pricey. I wish they offered a blackened 642, they could do away with the 442.

Anybody else notice the price drop on the 642?

Incorrect.

The Model 37 is an alloy/steel gun that stickers for ~$400.

I think S&W still offers high polish blue on their Model 10; otherwise, that finish is offered only through their performance center (custom shop).

That is one sharp little gun, from the polished blue to the laminated grips. LadySmith/ManSmith, who cares, the 36LS is one of the SWEETEST guns on the market. It feels good in hand, hides in a pocket and shoots like any other S&W. My 36 is from the mid 60's so I don't have a need for the LS, but if that base wasn't covered I would hitch up my skirt and head to the gunshop.

Tamara, I was referring to the blackened finish and not blued.

I've also wondered why Smith bothers to put an external hammer on such small guns.

That confuses me also, I just bought mine last may and I wonder why it's been yanked from their site, in fact it used to be that if you chose .38+P as the criteria for searching for pistols there were 3 pages of them, now there is only one pistol, the 642 with the crimson trace, so you have to choose .38 S&W +P and still, none of them have the titanium cylinders, what's up with that?

..,

So was I. The 37 on the shelf at work has the same blackened finish as the 442 in my pocket. The frame is alloy and therefore can't be blued, and so it is matte black anodized, just like on the 442 and the PD-series guns, with the cylinder finished in a matte black to match.

Trust me on this one. (Or I can take my digicam to work today and snap a picture of the new one on the shelf if you'd like to see one. :) )

I've also wondered why Smith bothers to put an external hammer on such small guns.

Because some folks like them. As a matter of fact, I'd say folks seem to prefer 'em by about a two-thirds majority. Most folks just don't like the DA pull on a J-frame and never stop to think that there's no way they're going to shoot the thing SA in a self-defense scenario.

RatFink,

It appears that they've discontinued all the Al/Ti guns and just kept the Sc/Ti guns in production. I'd wager that, for reasons unknown, the 340 was just clobbering the 342 in sales. Personally, I'll stick with my old-fashioned 442. :)

Tamara...

We trust you Tams....but go ahead and take a pic anyways!

1. We can always use another good S&W pic here.

2. The pic on the S&W webpage is not very good.

I decided to post a pic of my 1976 M37. Not the best pic, need to work on my lighting.

Well it's not a 442, and it's not a good pic, and it's surounded by other guns, but there is a pic of a 342 in here.
