Gun sales up 41% In Colorado Yesterday.

Door #1 - Is it fear of gun bans? (Here go gun prices again!)

Door #2 - Is there a fear of a possible “short-age” of guns or is it a fear of a “long-age” of targets? (Here go gun prices again!)

Door #3 - Wising up to the fact that maybe, just maybe, if you had a gun you won’t have to give CSI a reason to come and do their scene processing on you and yours? (Here go gun prices again!)

What say you?

Even if it's true, it doesn't sound like a trend - more like a nice sale.

A lot of people I know who aren't gun owners are considering it with all the shootings in the news. They'd rather be armed if they're going to face a psychopath.

She would also like to see Congress reinstate an assault-weapons ban, and she said Colorado should look into other measures that could prevent tragedies like Friday's shooting.

Typical. And when that fails to stop anything (a-la NYC) they (Bloomberg) start demanding the US Congress to 'help out'.

Jerks.

Some of it is "sky is falling" buying in anticipation of some kind of new legislation.

The overwhelming majority, though, are people arming themsleves so that they have an option besides running or pleading for their lives. It has been the same after each of these high profile shootings over the last few years. How many of these folks will follow through and actually practice and carry is another matter altogether, but the increase is a good thing regardless because 1) they will, at the very least, have that tool available to them at home and 2) it demonstrates to the politicians and talking heads that people would rather arm themselves than attempt to disarm everyone else.

An extreme majority of Americans do not favor more gun control. It seems that most have finally awoken to the fact that no matter how many things you regulate or ban, the nutcases will find a way to cause mayem and death. It took a long time for folks to come around and see this, but now that we're here, I don't think there's any turning back.

We've had 3 of these high profile incidents in CO, and the only one that was thwarted was the result of an armed citizen's actions. The other two were done in target rich victim disarmament zones. This fact has not gone unnoticed.

Mach, which other two incidents are you referring to?

Columbine and this latest theatre massacre.

The one that was stopped by an armed citizen (female) was the New Life Church incident in Colorado Springs.

Columbine was off-limits to CCW by state law, and the theatre has a NO GUNS policy. Granted, the theatre's policy does not carry weight of law, but the law abiding folks often obey such silly signs. I don't, but many people do not realize that the sign is pretty much unenforceable.

Also, a midnight opening night screening in a major city is not the kind of venue you'll typically find us "sheepdogs" (I hate that term, but it's convenient) attending. Even though I do occasionally attend movies at theatres and carry regardless of their signage, I absolutely would not have been at this event. I'm a nightowl, but Aurora mall is a cesspool of gang and thug violence, and I have zero inclination to deal with the crowds of a sold-out film, especially one that's mostly teenagers, regardless of location. I suspect most responsible adults who would have been armed share similar sentiments.

Maybe a bunch of individuals with some unallocated funds that are concerned about our economy? =D

It is a sad state of affairs but it is the reality we live in today.

How many times since 9/11 have you heard of passengers subduing an unruly passenger on an airplane? And passengers can be brutal to these threats too.

There is no sense being killed while sitting passively by.

So I don't think there is any fear of guns being banned driving this spike in sales. Think about it, this close to an election? Only the true liberals even tout this as a possibility.

People will take into their own hands what they legally can.

I would not be surprised to see the next attempted mass murder at any venue stopped short by legally armed citizenry.

I'm a home FFL. I sold three handguns yesterday at the drop of a hat. Someone on gunbrokr hit the buy-it-now button, someone called me about one on armslist, and someone else called me up and had me special order a 40cal. I haven't had much movement in the past several weeks but all the sudden wham!

Maybe a combination of all three.

They hear grandstanders like Mayor Bloomin' idiot propose banning everything.
Combined with a concern about shortages or unavailability like the Obama surge, so they figure they'll get while the getting is good. 1 & 2A

They may also see unrest and a lot of threats while the authorities seem ineffectual or unwilling to deal with those. Like the flash mobs of robbers and shoplifters.
The powers that be tell us crime is down and we are safer than ever. But that's not how many see it. 2B

Lastly, this was so random and senseless that it may have made people wake up from their routine and realize that it can too happen to them and theirs. 3

I wonder how many who have not obtained a carry permit (in states that allow it) will now get one.

The jump in gun sales is more than just a nice sales figure for the industry. It may be born of hysteria, but it needs to be pointed out to our political leadership that this points to an underlying truth...

When people get scared, they WANT guns. Even people who don't really know much about guns... people who haven't owned them before... people who can be embarassed into mumbling agreement with the 'intelligent, educated' sounding antis at the office... when things get scary, the average American still WANTS a gun in the house.

Write a letter or two. Explain this to your local lawmakers. Remember, their JOB may depend on allowing these people to feel safe. :D

I personally haven't bought any more guns or ammo....can't hardly wade through the stuff I have now.

It's great that the honest citizen wants to protect themselves. I do so hope that those buying, that are not so familiar with weapons, get training of some sort.

I think it's very simple. People are beginning to realize IT could happen to them and are slowly refusing to be a victim.

Trent - “Where did you get your stats from? Please site reliable sources.”

I can cite several reliable sources, but at this time it would be a moot point. Perhaps posts # 5, 7 and 14 can give you some direction as well as a number of national newspapers.

MachIVshooter - When I posted my question it was out of the frustration that these incidents cause to artificially raise gun and ammunition prices that never seem to come down long after the incident - if at all.

Yours and several other posters very thoughtful responses shed some light on these reactions and in the end may bring some awareness out of this tragedy. Many of you have made some very important points that I for one will bring to the attention of my local, State and Federal representatives.

Thank you all for taking the time to voice your opinion.

Several people that know I have a "couple" handguns have asked me to take them out shooting and "see what it is all about" according to one young lady. When I asked them what do they want to shoot, the answer is "something that will save me" almost universally. I think that fear of getting hurt is the bigger factor in the recent run that is happening.
