I am wondering if there is a company out there that makes sort of a messenger bag/suitcase style carry case for the AR, specifically the carbine models, meant to carry it in 2 pieces (not for immediate deployment) in a very compact manner. Or if any DIY people have gone and made something similar by themselves.

Attached is a pic I made, based on its dimensions, I figure an AR could be carried in a 24" x 15" space. Basically an over-sized laptop bag (my wife has a laptop bag that measures about 21" x 16" believe it or not).

I was just curious, thinking something like this would be less conspicuous for transport but also convenient for storage in some situations. I know you can probably carry an AR in a guitar soft case, which is plan B.

In case you are wondering, I am just tired of getting odd looks anytime I take my AR down to my car to go to the range (live in an apartment).

They may still give you sideways glances when you regularly fetch a guitar case out of you vehicle, thinking you may be a rocker.

Screw em, you don't have to change your routine for them, tell them you have a banjo in your gun case. It's your right, and you don't have to sugar coat it.

While not exactly what you describe, I have a Doskosil case for a takedown shotgun that is just long enough for an AR carbine and wide enough for packing several spare mags. It's not as long as a normal rifle case and looks more like a small travel suitcase. Fits perfectly behind the back seat of a Jeep Cherokee BTW. There are some softside cases made for such things as H&K SMG that are about 24"x12-14".

Thanks for the responses guys!

Minutemen, that case seems interesting, and the price is right, have you actually used one to know about how thick it is? The website only lists the length at 29"

The tool bag also seems interesting. Looks pretty durable and spacious inside.

Yes, I have one of the Bulldog cases. I don't know the exact thickness offhand, but it's a sturdily built case without being conspicuously overpadded. It's just right IMO. The 29" outer length is accurate. It's 27" on the inside, which is just big enough to accommodate my Polish AKMS underfolder. Especially for the price, I've been very pleased with mine.

This case has worked well for me, since I sometimes bring a rifle on business trips, both for defense and any opportunities to visit ranges during any down time. I hate leaving rifles in the car in hotel parking lots, but it's awkward lugging what's obviously a rifle case through a hotel lobby and hallways. This case is a great alternative, as it perfectly fits a single rifle without looking like a rifle case at all. As a bonus, it also matches my blue duffle bag that I use on these trips, which suggests that I simply have matching luggage.

I got a $20 plastic tool box (I think its Stanley) from Lowes that works well. You can get a bunch of other stuff in it too besides the gun(s).

If your looking for something discreet, we used to use baseball duffle bags/back packs. The bat portion of the bag is great for the upper, some will fit the 20"+ uppers. Plenty of room for other gear and clothing. You can even hook a ball glove and other swag to the bag to help you sell it.

There is also the device bag made by S.O. Tech. Its a column bag designed off of their go bag. Its big enough to fit a separated 16" AR .

Hope that helps.

I have this:

Which doesn't look too rifle-ish, and holds a carbine well:

And yes, that is a folding pistol grip- not necessery, but it helps, and though I was a bit skeptical when I brought it, it's not a bad product:

Ramone,
I recently got the same bag from Amazon(now listed as no longer available) and was wondering if you've had any problem with the rifles lubricant(oil) on the inside of the bag.

I tend to lube on the heavy side (with CLP), and I haven't had any issues- the rifle usually lives in a Pelican case, and there is a little lube on the foam here and there.

I just checked- the 'discreet' case does have a few lube spots, but it doesn't seem to have affected the materials integrity.
