I had a nightmare the other day that reminded me why I don't buy DAO guns.

In the dream I was in a mall, and a man began shooting my friends and family, I drew, it was a Kel Tec P11 (which I used to own but got rid of because of dreams similar to this). I had the sights square on him, then I began attempting to squeeze the trigger, it was too hard. I put all my effort into squeezing it then when it did go off, the sights were far to the left and I missed. My dream finished with me holding a member of my family as they died (this actually happened to me with my brother so I know why it is in my head).

I guess the shooting in Colorado has been on my mind lately. I call places like the mall and movie theaters "sardine cans in a barrel" because they are nothing more than target rich environments for crazed shooters. I avoid them at all costs because I have had dreams like this for several years. But I also avoid pistols with really strong trigger pulls for this exact reason.

Any one else crazy? Or am I alone in this issue?

I think this is the same type of thing as not being able to punch or throw something in dreams. I've had dreams where I've pulled the trigger, but the trigger won't reset. I believe it has something to do with your brain practicing for survival (I've forgotten all my Psychology info from last semester).

Anyway, I haven't exactly passed on a purchase of a gun because of it, but I have lost interest in one before. Had a dream I was practicing some target drills with live ammo, and then for some reason realized I didn't have a backstop. There was a perfect .45 caliber hole in everything straight down the street for 300 yards. I felt weird about dry firing for a day or so after.

I had a similar dream once where someone broke in the front door of my house right in front of me. I managed to draw my P-64 (which I frequently wear, even at home) and bring it on target before he could get his gun on me, but then I couldn't pull the trigger. I was pulling as hard as I could and it wouldn't fire. The dream ended just as he aimed his gun at me.

That doesn't shake my confidence in my P-64, though. In reality, the double action trigger pull is hard, but not at all unmanageable. I don't mind it at the range, and in an emergency I wouldn't even notice it.

It's honestly just an adult version of the common childhood nightmare of trying to run from something and your legs won't work right. Nothing to be worried about. That doesn't mean you can't learn some things from it, though.

If I went like that, I wouldn't own any guns. This is because I've had a dream where every single round I fire is ineffective. Including shooting a BG with a 180 gr .30-06 in the face. I just put them out of my mind. My dreams have always centered around the rounds not being effective. Now I'll probably dream about not being able to pull the trigger in double action on my snubnose :)

I think we all have dreams like that. In mine, I either can't pull the trigger because the weight is too heavy, or the gun dry fires instead of going off.

Take it as a sign that's it's time to go to the range to "reassure" yourself.

Have had nightmares where my 870 just was not putting them down. I'm not going to stop keeping it by the bed though. I am not one to put a lot of stock in things that my mind does, it gets a little crazy sometimes:p

Those used to happen now and again.. gun no workie too good, misshapen ammo etc.
I think dreams are practice for life.

I have dreams like this all the time. I think they may originate from my earliest memory of holding my Dad's .22 magnum revolver and not being strong enough to squeeze the DA trigger pull. I purchased an XD Sub-Compact and still had the dreams. I've always had an aversion to firearms with really heavy trigger pulls, but it looks like I might be picking up a Judge Public Defender for SD, which has a much heavier trigger pull than what I am used to. Maybe conquering my aversion to heavier trigger pulls will put an end to the dreams. But maybe not, as almost all of the dreams I can remember when I wake in the morning tell like a detailed epic film with carefully designed plots and characters, and it's been that way for as long as I can remember. :D

But no, I did not use my dreams as a basis upon which to dictate my future purchase.

I had a dream recently that made me buy a gun. I was in an unfamiliar town with my fiance. While we were there a tornado ripped by right next to us and chaos ensued. During the chaos two guys carrying hammers came up to us, hammers covered in blood. When they got within a few yards of us they started telling us they could fix our truck as it had been damaged during the storm. I told them to leave but they weren't having it. They began to move closer and one began swinging wildly, accidentally hitting his partner. As they fumbled with eachother I drew my handgun and placed one in the bigger guy's knee. The one the had been hit with the hammer rushed me and tried to grab the gun. I repositioned the gun to my left hand and by this time he had me by my right hand and was attempting to break my arm with the hammer. As i took the blows to my arm, I managed to put a 9mm rounds in his face. I woke up terrified yet comforted and bought my m&p the next day.

Nope I dont really react to my dreams... Otherwise, I would have divorced my wife to be with Cindy Crawford, sold all my guns for a cape, picked the right six numbers, etc. etc. etc. lol

Lets see, last week I had a dream where a bad guy broke into the house and none of the guns I keep at hand (S&W M13, Rem 870, & G23) stooped him. They all worked but he was unaffected.

I had to beat him with the 870 stock while my wife went upstairs and got the AR-10. Even then the mag wouldn't load till she held the bolt back. She finally got it running and put him down.

Last night I had a dream that I was on vacation in Florida and the trigger guard broke off my G23 while I was wrestling around with a bad guy. Gun still worked but I couldn't carry it anymore.

None of this makes a bit of difference in my gun selection.

My self-defense dreams all involve getting caught in a situation and not being able to run, literally. I can walk, but my legs simply won't perform the movements of running. So I have to fight.

Sometimes I have a gun, sometimes not. In the last dream of this kind I remember, I was carrying a pump shotgun which I had somehow managed to conceal in a business suit.

It's been said that if you die in your dream, then you don't wake up -- ever. I'm still here, but if the other guy was also dreaming, he has fared less well.

Yeah I've had that dream where you try to pull the trigger and it just won't go. As hard as I pulled it wouldn't fire. I did not associate it with DA triggers though, because I don't remember it being a particular gun. I think it was more about my brain trying to process the concept of taking a life. Usually when I am unable to fire, bad things happen. So I guess maybe it is my brain/sub-conscience telling me that I have to be prepared in more ways than one, ya know?

I think this speaks to a subconscious concern about your shooting skills not being up to the task, regardless of what gun is in your hand.

It's one thing to be able to punch small groups in paper slow-fire, but in a dynamic situation, slow-fire won't likely win the day. Fast, accurate shooting will.

It's not difficult to master a DA pull, but it does require practice.

Strangely enough any dream I have that involves guns usually goes one of two ways. If it's a gun I own, or have used before, I shoot well and it handles like it's supposed to. When it's a gun I've never shot before, or encountered, the dimensions are right but it never has any recoil or weight to it. (I had a zombie dream where I was running through a hospital with an M14 which weighed less than 1lb from the feel, and it had virtually no recoil... not realistic, I know).

+1 to this. Yeah I think DAO isn't really what's bothering you man. I respectfully suggest a counselor if you avoid places because there could be a shooter. Like I said, I mean no disrespect and this is JMO, and if you had a situation like what you talked about actually happen with your brother, then your thought process is not unexpected or unjustified.

I sure wouldn't let a dream stop me from going to the places I want to go or do the things I want to though.

That being said, I prefer SA/DA capable guns.

Take care

I haven't had this dream, but it is a dream of mine.

I'm pretty sure that concealment holster would win the NRA Golden Bullseye award!

No, not since the doc told me to stopping dunking my oreo's in my scotch prior to bedtime.

A psych student could have a grand time with all of this free material. None of it complimentary to gun owners, I'm afraid.
