I'm not going to mention a "zombie apocalypse", but lets say for... just in case. Do you guys keep a stockpile of ammo that you wont touch on range or hunting trips, but are basically saving up? I figure it cant hurt to have a pile of ammo that isn't going to be used unless completely necessary.

I don't stockpile worrying about needing it for survival. I simply buy more than I plan to shoot because I know won't get any cheaper. A couple of decades of that has left me well supplied.

i shoot 22lr--have about 6k in federal bulk--avg. 13.00 per k. also stocked components for 45acp -brass, powder, primers and lead (cast my own)-enough for another 6k. also load for 45-70--just enough stuff for practice and hunting (several hundred rounds).;)

Not really, I keep 6,000 rounds of .223 and a couple thousand each of 9mm and .40 in storage, but I don't consider that a stockpile. :)

No. Before hurricane season I'll usually buy an extra box or two for each gun, but that gets burnt up quickly. Only thing I really have to worry about is looters in the case of a hurricane.

"Stockpile" could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I don't think I have a stockpile...but the media would likely describe my collection as an arsenal complete with its own ammo factory. It would sound scary as hell on MSNBC.

In reality though...it's not much. I have enough components on hand at any point in time to make a few thousand rounds...on top of the few thousand i have already on the shelf.

My goal was just to have enough on hand so that if the hoarders came back out of the woodwork I wouldn't get screwed out of components. When Obama got elected it was easier to find a unicorn than a primer. I just want to shoot and enjoy some reloading...not build a mountain of lead.

Not even close. I have a couple hundred rounds for my SKS and Mosin, a hundred or so 9mm, and a few hundred .22lr, and a handful of boxes for the 12 and 20 gauges.

No, I don't have a bunch put aside with the idea of only using it in an emergency.
I do have a lot, because I reload a lot, and I buy factory ammo and reloading components when the price is right.

Whenever I teach someone to shoot I give them the ammo. For instance I'm teaching three ladies to shoot now and it doesn't take long to go through such as this.

You have to better define "stockpile".

I have .. approximately..

11,000 rounds for 50 BMG (AP, API, APIT, FMJ, tracer - I bought a trailer full right before Talon went Kaput)
3,000 rounds 7.62x39
2,000 rounds 5.45x39
3,000 rounds 5.56 NATO
2,000 rounds 40 S&W
around 1,500 rounds of 9x18mm
5,000 rounds (usually) of 45 ACP
5,280 rounds (just purchased so I know exact count) 7.62x54R
1,800 rounds (just counted) of 5.7x28mm
2,850 rounds (just counted) of 308 (yugo surplus)
250 rounds of 7x57
250 rounds of 7.5 Swiss
50 rounds of 45 Colt (I reload as I go on those)
*0* rounds of 8x57mm (need to load more!!!!)
2480 rounds of 7.62x25 Tokarev, which is odd, as I don't own a gun in that caliber.. (Leftovers from gun shop)
50ish rounds of 300 Win Mag (I reload as I go on those)
150ish rounds of 22-250 (I reload as I go on those, too)

So around 36K rounds of ammo, give or take. I also have some oddballs and on the pistol calibers I'd need to do a count, since those fluctuate. (I shoot 400-500 rounds a weekend, so I load 5K, shoot them until I'm low, load another 5k)

Do I have "enough"?

Hell no.

(Except for 50 cal. I think I have enough 50 cal.)

Not a "stockpile" by MY eyes, a lot thinner than it was back when 7.62x39 was $80 a case and you could buy surplus 308 and 8mm for 10 cents a round.

^^^ THIS.

After '08, I resolved myself to never, ever be "caught short again". EVER.

As such, I have 110,000 primers in my basement set aside.

25k each of small pistol, small rifle, large pistol, large rifle, plus 10K 50 BMG.

Trent, that is a stockpile. What do you need that much 50bmgt for? What do you shoot it
out of?
I have a few 7.62x54
About 200-300 7.62x39
7-800 5.45x39
800 7.62x25
And reloading components for 45. I wish I had so much more ammo than I do ):

What Trent said.^^^^^ I got Obamated once. It won't happen again. SP primers have disappeared in my area. Last I saw were Rem and they were priced $40.00per 1,000. That was back in late May-early June. IIRC, the same thing happenened during Obamanation I.

I just replace what I shoot as I shoot it. Not scared enough to go hog wild and buy cases of ammo. I have enough ammo to last me about 3 yrs on hand.
20 boxes of each pistol caliber
40 boxes of each rifle caliber

2 cases of rimfire in .22lr and .22 Mag

It is always a good idea to keep a little extra ammo and or components on hand for when stock gets scarce, like after Clinton was elected, and even more so after Obama was elected. The ones of us who learned the first time around, were able to keep shooting the next time around while most folks were scrambling to find ammo/components, and especially primers. Those who could often paid a premium. It pays to be ready. A few hundred rounds or the equivalent in components can keep you shooting. How much to keep on hand depends on how much you shoot. A couple K primers is always good to have laying around.
